20.01.2022 Behaviours are like tools. We need tools to manipulate, control, and influence our environment. If a tool is working, we continue using it. If a tool doesn't work, we throw it away and find something else that works. This is why, when trying to reduce a challenging behaviour, it is CRITICAL that we teach the child a socially acceptable replacement behaviour that has the same function for him. E.g. if a child is crying to gain our attention, and if we simply ignore the crying..., the child is likely to try something else that we can't ignore, such as climbing on the furniture, aggression, or headbanging. But if we teach the child to say 'Mummy, look at me' and always respond to that, then the child has no reason to use the old behaviour, or invent a new one. 20.01.2022 We love using visuals when designing Behaviour Support Plans! Children with autism often struggle understanding and processing verbal information, which causes confusion, anxiety, frustration, and challenging behaviours. Parents can often prevent a significant amount of behaviours by simply including more visuals in their everyday life. Here is 9 reasons how visuals can make your child's life a lot easier.

20.01.2022 Be prepared for the Extinction Burst! When we first start implementing a new strategy, we need to be prepared for what we call an extinction burst. Behaviours get worse before they get better.... Your child may try harder and harder to resist the behaviour strategy, and it is absolutely CRITICAL that you remain consistent and stick with the strategy. Here is a short article explaining this phenomenon. I love the vending machine example! https://bit.ly/2HnlW3N

As a parent, you can often predict when your child is about to start a behaviour, or what behaviours to expect in a certain environment. A Behaviour Support Plan gives you strategies and techniques to use in order to prevent, de-escalate, and recover quicker from challenging behaviours. It also gives you the comfort and peace of mind of having a plan and knowing what to do. ... 19.01.2022 This is our favourite question to ask when managing challenging behaviours: WTF? (What's The Function?)... Identifying the function of a behaviour is the first step in determining the behaviour strategy. When you are overwhelmed with an especially confusing behaviour, step back, write an ABC, and think function. Read our articles on the four functions of behaviours for more information. https://autismbehaviourtherapy.com//what-are-the-four-fun/

18.01.2022 Such a great article. Some children with autism quite often target one parent over other, usually the mum. Having to take the blunt of the challenging behaviours can be extremely overwhelming for mothers. It is useful to remember these four words. Also to remember you are not alone and it's okay to ask for help from your loved ones and from professionals. https://bit.ly/2L9zzZC... autismbehaviourtherapy.com

17.01.2022 Research conducted over 20 years reveal that most problem behaviours are learned! This means, at some point in their lives, your child has learned that engaging in a specific behaviour works for them in one way or another. Remember, every behaviour happens for a reason. Although you don't actively do anything to encourage a problem behaviour, children still learn from their interactions with their environment, and yes, even children with autism are active learners. Every day,... they learn how to impact on their environment with their actions. You can help your child learn positive behaviours by catching their good behaviours in the act and reinforcing them. https://autismbehaviourtherapy.com/

14.01.2022 This is such a great video to inspire all the parents on how they can join in play with their children. I especially love the advice about simplifying the language and tuning in instead of trying to lead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-c50HNnPg0

14.01.2022 A useful strategy to implement everyday is to give your child a countdown before finishing a preferred item or activity. Giving countdown prepares your child to what is about to happen. Using this strategy consistently and accurately reduces future protest behaviours. You can give your child a last minute warning before finishing an item or activity, then count back from five just before taking the item from them. It is important not to allow your child continue having the it...em after the countdown is finished, otherwise the countdown will lose its effectiveness. Contact your local behaviour specialist if your child struggles with finishing. https://autismbehaviourtherapy.com/

04.01.2022 Every parent must have seen their fair share of tantrums. Good news is, most typically developing children grow out of tantrums as they grow older. However, this may not be the case for children with autism. There is a common misconception that children with autism have more tantrums because they have more difficulty communicating their needs and wants. Children who are unable to express themselves may feel frustration. Parents and carers often believe improving their child's... speech and language skills will make the behaviours naturally go away. However, tantrums and meltdowns are rarely about communication challenges. Using visuals, daily schedules, count-downs, first-then boards, and teaching your child skills such as waiting or tolerating being said 'no' can help reducing tantrums. A behaviour support plan can provide you with tools and effective strategies to reduce your child's tantrums. Contact Autism Behaviour Therapy to find out about our behaviour support services at Gold Coast.

03.01.2022 April is Autism Awareness Month and as Autism Behaviour Therapy, we really want to accomplish changing the way society looks at autism and challenging behaviours. So many parents who have children with special needs are reluctant to go out in public because of challenging behaviours. It is difficult to manage challenging behaviours at home and it is even harder to do this in public. When a challenging behaviour breaks out in the middle of a busy shopping centre, parents not ...only have to make sure their children are safe, they also have to deal with the embarrassment of having an audience who might stare or judge. Outings can be a very negative experience for the children and for parents likewise, and can present a significant barrier in children's inclusion in the community. Help us educate people and change the way society looks at challenging behaviours. Like our page and share this article as far as you can. https://autismbehaviourtherapy.com//change-the-way-you-lo/
