23.01.2022 The Autism Health & Well Being Association (who ran the Expo) are working hard on their employment service for teens and adults with autism. Its slow going, we need funding to move faster, but heres news about the third person placed in a job since the associations establishment. Thanks to Dimitrios from recomcleaning.com.au for being part of it all, read on for more :)
23.01.2022 The Autism Health & Well Being Association Inc. (not-for-profit charity) is running the Expo. Along with our Expo, the other main area of service we offer is helping teens and adults with autism find a job. We also hire people with autism whenever we can. We are working with Northern School for Autism on helping their exiting students find jobs, and we also have close ties with Bulleen Heights Secondary School, where students are - at this very moment - packing show bags for the Expo which helps develop their organisation skills, confidence and self esteem. The school is always looking for other work for their students to do on campus, so contact Joanne on 9852 1631 if your workplace can outsource jobs and a donation in return for the work is appreciated by the school.
23.01.2022 Meet Zach - our speaker at 2:00pm this Sunday. Zach Zaborny is a Recruitment Consultant for EPIC Recruit Assist and helps people on the autism spectrum find work. As someone on the autism spectrum himself, he knows first hand what its like to be an employee in the workplace on the autism spectrum. In his presentation, Zach will not only share his work experiences being on the spectrum, but he will also cover why its important to hire someone on the autism spectrum and what benefits both the employer and the employee can mutually gain. Visit Epic Assist and Zach at their table in the foyer before and after his talk if you are on the spectrum and looking for work, and dont miss out on Zachs talk at 2pm! 22.01.2022 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE HORSES! Unfortunately the horses wont be coming due to unforeseen circumstances BUT just in the nick of time, we have Cooper and Desi, tiny ponies, coming all the way from the country instead! They will be out the back from 10am - 2pm, they need to leave early to go back to the farm. So, if you have booked tickets after 2pm and you were planning to see the horses then, you better come earlier, say around 1pm to see some ponies. You will be ab...le to enter with your ticket even if it has a later time slot on it, you will get through without a problem. 18.01.2022 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT The Autism Health and Well Being Association ran one of Melbournes largest autism Expos last year. This not-for-profit charity organisation worked hard to bring this Expo to the autism community, however, we regret to announce we are not running another Expo this year. The AHWB Association has appealed to the government and business sectors requesting funding for the continuation of the Expo, without return. So, sadly, there will not be an Expo this ye...ar. Keep watching this space for updates and it is our long term goal to not only run another Melbourne Expo, but take the Expos interstate so that as many Australians as possible can have access to this important event. The AHWB Association are instead, channelling its efforts into two other urgent and much needed areas: 1. an Employment service for people with autism 2. educating businesses and schools on strategies to support children, teenagers and adults with autism We are making incredible and amazing headway with these two programs, and encourage you to like and follow our Autism Health & Well Being Association Facebook page www.facebook.com/autismhealthandwellbeingassociation to keep up to date with these crucial services. Thank you very much for your support to date and if you have any questions telephone 1300 784 417 or email [email protected] Sincerely, Amanda Curtis Autism Health & Well Being Association Inc.

10.01.2022 Wed like to thank Jeanette Purkis for her talk Inside the mind of a student with autism held last Friday night. The sharing of Jeanettes experiences has hel...ped many who attended to further support their student or child on the spectrum. Thank you Jeanette from the Autism Health & Well Being Association for helping to raise over $700 which will go directly towards our association which helps people with autism find a job and educates the community about autism. We had a few VIPs on the night: Councillor Julie Williams (Darebin City Council), Penny Robinson (who live tweeted the event), Colleen Duggan (SPAN house manager) and Cathy Coghlan (Northcote Plaza manager) along with our committed and hard working volunteers. The supermoon truly came early to have so many leaders in the autism community in the one room, on the one night!

08.01.2022 Cathy Coghlan, Manager of Northcote Plaza, was busy all day at the Expo explaining the Autism Friendly Place (AFP) Program which has been rolled out at the Plaza. The Plaza has worked closely with the Autism Health & Well Being Association and now over 60 stores at the Plaza know what autism means and are making small changes. Clothing stores may offer change rooms as a quiet place to retreat to if a child is having a meltdown. Some cafes will offer a glass of water to a ca...rer if the carer expresses they are feeling overwhelmed. Considering most of the store owners at the Plaza work 14 - 16 hour days, seven days a week and still put aside time to learn about autism shows how much they care and want to have children, teenagers and adults with autism visit the plaza and not only be supported, but be able to be openly autistic without judgement or stigmatization. For more info on the Plaza and their involvement with the AFP Program - which according to our research makes Northcote Plaza the worlds first Autism Friendly Shopping Centre (!!) - visit www.northcoteplaza.com See more

02.01.2022 "Another factor that shouldnt be overlooked, is the role that gaming can play in ones social identity. A lot of kids on the spectrum can feel undervalued beca...use they may not be the great at sports, or conversation, or a lot of things that denote social status in the schoolyard. They can often feel as though theyre not good at anything, that they have nothing to offer. But if theyre great at a video game, especially one with a multiplayer component, then among those who play the game, theyre a rock star. Everybody wants to have them on their team. Instead of always getting picked last in PE, people are fighting over who gets to have them on their side. And that sense of being valued and respected for their abilities can be an immense boost to ones self-esteem." - Max Last week, Max spoke about Autism and video games at #ALLinVAC. Our speakers can deliver professional development and cover a broad range of topics. Learn more: www.ican.network/speakers-agency/
