14.01.2022 Supporting young people with disability to access NDIS employment support 22/09/2020 Did you know NDIS support can be accessed for school to work transition, and may be accessed much earlier than the final year of school? In fact, providers can support students that have an employment goal from around AGE 14... The NDIS Price Guide 2020-21 outlines that transition and employment support can be ‘supplied to any working-age participant (including students reaching working age) with an employment goal'. This may include supports to: explore what work would mean for them (discovery); build essential foundation skills for work; managing complex barriers to obtaining and sustaining employment; specialised job customisation; develop a career plan; and other capacity-building supports that are likely to lead to successful engagement in a Disability Employment Service. Research demonstrates that education and employment outcomes are significantly improved through exposure to real work experiences and career development opportunities at school. The NDS Ticket to Work ‘After School Jobs Project’ is an example of supporting students with disability into employment while at school. Providers may like to encourage young people, their parents and carers to consider including Transition and Employment Support in their next NDIS plan review. Even before then, Community Participation funding can be used to help start the journey to employment, including for volunteering or work experience placements. To find out more, see the NDIS resource, Let’s talk about work, or visit the Ticket to Work website for information about how this initiative can support students to gain an after-school job. Contact information For any enquiries, please contact Michelle Wakeford, National Ticket to Work Manager, 0413 750 745 [email protected]

13.01.2022 Yes, poor eye contact is a characteristic of autistic individuals. No, we should not write goals to improve eye contact. Why? Well we need to listen to autisti...c adults and they say NOT to work on this. I vividly remember Temple Grandin saying, Here’s the deal people, I can either look at you or I can listen to you but I can’t do both. I have heard other autistic adults explain that making eye contact is painful or overwhelming. From a social communication perspective, eye contact shows the listener that you are paying attention. So here’s how I address this issue. I write goals for the child to visually check-in when asked a question or when the child’s name is called. By using the term visually check-in we are accepting the child’s response of looking in our general direction as acceptable. So a goal could read CHILD will visually check-in 3 times during story time with a preferred book or CHILD will visually check-in within 3 seconds of name being called. At age 15, my son still has poor eye contact, but he is SO much better at visually checking in at appropriate times when interacting with others. . . . #cariebertseminars #slpsofinstagram #instaslp #speechtherapy #slp #slpmom #autismmom

03.01.2022 AUTISM & MELTDOWNS: A GUIDE (Re-sharing this respectful, Autistic-crafted tip sheet from Bendigo Autistic Advocacy and Support Service - downloadable version be...low) TEXT: Autistic brains experience the world differently. Autistic experiences are real and valid. Sensory processing differences can mean some sounds, textures, tastes and sensations may be intolerable or painful. It can mean differences in movement, balance and different skills develop at a different pace. Meltdowns are an involuntary response to overload from sensory stimuli, overwhelm/exhaustion/anxiety, change or an accumulation or combination of these. Autistic people cannot control a meltdown. ~ Facts and Tips ~ It is important to respect and gently support a person in meltdown. Do not judge and please do not ever punish or impose consequences. Ensure safety of the person and yourself Give space Remove others from area Subtle supervision from distance **Intervene only if imminent danger** (e.g. traffic) DO NOT TOUCH/RESTRAIN Only hold person if known to be effective for them and only by someone known well Respect cues If speaking to, being close by, eye contact or touching someone increases distress or signs of distress, avoid these wherever possible Reduce eye contact Reduce speech Reduce volume Positive, calming tone Reduce environmental stimuli Where possible, reduce noise, bright lights Remove triggers Recovery time drink and snacks, space and unlimited access to calming/favourite activity is crucial Ensure environments/activities are inclusive and accessible.
