21.01.2022 We are so pleased to share Sarina and Christian's story, as part of our 2019/2020 Annual Report! 'Christian made a somewhat unexpected and unusual arrival into the world. Mum, Sarina, and Dad, Frank had been told they couldn’t have children, and so when Sarina was feeling unwell for a few days, the last thing they expected was that they were about to become parents... Born at only 24 weeks, Christian spent the first three months of his life at the Women and Children’s Hospita...l, much of it in intensive care. As a consequence, his development continued to be closely monitored by health professionals, and this is what led to Christian receiving an early diagnosis of autism at about 3 years of age...' 12.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, a National day of commemoration for those that have been killed in all wars and conflicts throughout our history. This year, Remembrance Day falls in the middle of NAIDOC Week. Did you know, that although it was technically illegal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join the war effort, many did? In fact, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians have fought for Australia in every war since Federation in 1901. Though Aborigi...nal and Torres Strait Islander Australian’s fought for Australia, most of their efforts were sadly not recognised upon their return. Today at Autism SA we reflect on the many different cultures that have fought for Australia in a war, including the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women. Lest we forget. To learn more about the in depth history, and personal stories, of the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the war, and what happened upon their return to Australia, you can read these articles: https://www.sbs.com.au//remembrance-day-look-history-indig https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-32281865

11.01.2022 October is International Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month which this year’s theme is focusing on Bridging the Silence through Solidarity. To highlight what AAC is, we thought we’d share this beautiful story Jess sent us, as a fabulous example of using AAC to support individuals who use AAC to be included with their siblings and peers. Lilah is so pleased to be able to join in with her brothers’ funny games! Lilah’s brothers were playing wit...h the google home mini, getting it to say silly things (just like kids do ). Lilah started to get frustrated because the google home mini wasn’t understanding her words and sounds so she couldn’t get the google home to do what she wanted it to do. Lilah’s mum Jess saw how frustrated she was getting and thought how wonderful it would be for her daughter to be able to activate the google with her brothers. So she added some words like hey google to Lilah’s AAC system (iPad with Proloquo2Go application) and then she was able to get the google home to make fart noises just like her brothers were doing! Jess said it was such a powerful and inclusive moment to see Lilah being able to join in with her brothers! The smile says it all thank you Jess for sharing your story with us, and for sending in this beautiful happy photo of Lilah
