25.01.2022 This is an interesting read. I’ve read many comments by people with autism recently that they are struggling with autism being portrayed as a ‘superpower’. Many feel that the recent media a attention on Greta and TV shows like ‘Atypical’ are not demonstrating the true range of diversity and certainly not highlighting the extreme difficulties many with autism and their families face every day. Some people have reported that they are experiencing poorer mental health due to fee...ling like failures because they are not able cope well enough to engage in the world to the same level as the figures portrayed in the public media. However, other people with autism feel it is very positive that autism is starting to shift away from being seen as a disability. From my perspective I can see both sides of the argument. I feel there is a delicate balance between the two and it is important not to put anyone in a box and label what they might or might not be able to achieve. Recent research does show that even those people who have been labelled as ‘high functioning’ often still require significant levels of supports. Even the term ‘high functioning’ has the ability to take away from the very real challenges people can have in relation to their autism, which is why I never use the term. What are your thoughts and experiences of this? I’d love to hear them if you you feel comfortable posting in the comments, or inbox me if you’d prefer. See more

17.01.2022 This video provides a simple explanation of autism that I think would be useful for explaining autism to children to promote understanding.

09.01.2022 This YouTube video gives a small glimpse into the sensory experiences of someone with autism. Watch it with headphones to get the proper experience. It certainly provides some insight into why people with autism can have such strong reactions to sensory aspects of their environment. Can anyone recommend any other informative videos such as this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZZ5FSfFVog

07.01.2022 Autism is a way of being. It is pervasive; it colors every experience, every sensation, perception, thought, emotion, and encounter, every aspect of existence. It is not possible to separate the autism from the person--and if it were possible, the person you'd have left would not be the same person you started with. - Jim Sinclair... 04.01.2022 My parents were punished for my presentation. I was wracked with guilt and anger, and I couldn’t articulate that. So my family bore the brunt of my struggle. N...ow I’m in a better place, I want to share this with those who said she’s fine... I was not fine, but even with all my difficulties I just knew you weren’t trustworthy enough to see the real me, so I masked. I was not in control of it either, in actual fact it controlled me. You took advantage of that, and traumatised me. An emotional insight from an inspirational 16 year old autistic young person. Thank goodness she’s able to be herself now. #actuallyautistic #teenageinsights #insprational Remember, we are here if you need us. www.sunshine-support.org
