22.01.2022 If there is any advice I can give, it is to take things slowly. It is okay to take a break from things like therapy if it is too hard to do online. It is okay to take a break from people and just relax with a warm bath, or watch your favourite shows on tv. Do things that relax you. Amaze invited four autistic adults to share how their lives have been impacted by the pandemic. These are their stories.

15.01.2022 Free Autism in Academia webinar this Friday. The number of Autistic students in universities is increasing and there are several examples of universities working hard to create an environment that accepts and celebrates Autistic diversity. Yet, there is a lack of recognition that Autistic students may go on to become academics and a lack of acknowledgement of Autistic academics within our universities. Autism research is still largely dominated by approaches which refer to au...tism as a disorder or a deficit with the aim to treat or cure autism. However, Autistic people and their allies are challenging these assumptions and are demanding Autistic people be included in the conduct of research to ensure it meets the needs of their community. This seminar will bring together Autistic self-advocates, academics and the public to discuss how universities and research can be more accepting of Autistic people. Hear from a panel of Autistic self-advocates engaged in research and academia. This event is hosted by RMITs HASH (Health, Arts, Social sciences and Humanities) network and the Social and Global Studies Centre (SGSC). Date And Time Fri, 11 September 2020 2:00 PM 3:30 PM AEST Tickets: Free, registration required.

15.01.2022 Five weeks ago, as Melbourne entered a strict lockdown of nightly curfews, mandatory masks, and bans on social gatherings, the ABC began documenting life during this once-in-a-century event in the words of those living through it. A diverse group of Melburnians recorded their experience of lockdown in a series of video diaries. Anna Cristina, autistic advocate and a co-founder of autistic advocacy org The Autistic Realm Australia - TARA participated in the project.... "Im autistic, and in some ways, going into the first stage 3 lockdown was just bliss. Less demands, less people around. The sensory things, like the reduction in car noise. I started to notice birds again in our garden. This one is less enjoyable. Not because the conditions have changed, its the way people are responding to it. Theyre anxious, theyre frightened, theyre angry, and you can feel it in the air wherever you go."

08.01.2022 Two weeks ago, we reached out to the Amaze community in Victoria to tell us about their experiences of schooling during Term 3. We received an amazing response. Your powerful feedback and results provide incredible insight into what has been happening. While families reported vastly different experiences, here are some key findings: - Over two-thirds of respondents indicated a decline in students mental health and wellbeing, ... - Half reported that students learning had not progressed, - Significant numbers commented that students had stopped engaging with schooling altogether, - There is very high desire to return to school. A huge thank you to everyone who participated. These results are helping us continue to advocate to the Victorian Government to better support autistic students. The Learning in Lockdown report can be viewed here:

07.01.2022 Amaze has led the consultation and development of the Australian Autism Alliances submission to the Inquiry into the services, support and life outcomes for autistic people in Australia. In the submission, we call for major changes to how the Commonwealth Government funds, organises and supports services for autistic people, with our primary recommendation being for the establishment of a National Autism Strategy. The submission would not have been possible without the input... of 3,884 members of the autistic and autism communities who contributed their personal experiences to the most comprehensive survey and report into autistic Australians and their families undertaken outside of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The submission is titled The Autism Dividend Unleashing the skills, talent and opportunity of Australias autistic community, and you can download it here. Download the survey summary report and the full Senate Inquiry submission on our website.

07.01.2022 Victoria's called 'The Education State' for a reason. We want kids to have the very best start in life no matter where they live. And to receive an education ...that matches their needs and supports them no matter their background. That's what makes today so special. Nearly $1.6 billion to completely transform the way students with disabilities receive support at school. We know that in the past, some kids who've needed extra help just haven't been eligible. That's made things tough at school, and tough for families. And far too many have fallen through the cracks. So we're expanding the criteria and doubling the number of students who'll receive targeted support in the classroom including kids with autism, dyslexia or complex behaviours. We'll employ specialist facilitators to help identify students' individual circumstances and needs. This new approach will focus on what a student can achieve in the classroom - rather than what they can't. It means kids will be given more opportunity to work to their strengths, in areas that interest them. And to help schools better plan and adjust support for students, we're investing in staff and skills too. 81 additional teacher roles in specialist schools. 25 coaches and new learning resources to support teachers. And 150 scholarships for existing staff to build on their skills and experience. This investment is the biggest in our state's history. And unlike anything else in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks a complete reform in how a student's needs will be identified, and how those needs will be met in the classroom. More kids will get the help they need and a fairer future. Because that's exactly what they deserve.

04.01.2022 > Ryan's book highlights the universality of the painful sting of social rejection and dislocation; through the unique, almost anthropological perspective, only an outsider gazing on a world they don't fit into, can offer. I do believe neurodiversity is a kind of superpower because it illuminates everybody's sensitivities. I believe that those who are neurodiverse are here to highlight, question, challenge, but mainly illuminate what most people are struggling with, or are s...ensitive to, but are skimming over in service of fitting in socially." 03.01.2022 Content warning: Mental health. Scroll down to read the post. . . . .... . . Today is R U Ok? Day - a day dedicated to talking about mental health and where we are encouraged to check in with our friends, colleagues and family. Of course, a large percentage of Victorians would say they arent okay at the moment if they answered honestly. But thats okay. Our world has been turned upside down, and everything has changed. Today is a reminder to be honest about how youre feeling - within yourself, and to those around you. If you can find someone you can have a discussion with about your mental health, then try do so whenever you need to, not just on the one day the internet tells you to. Its also okay not to know how to suppport someone who is having mental health struggles. Writer Tatiana Alfaro says: "...we are not prepared to deal with emotions because we havent received any kind of education about this topic that is part of our daily lives and our inner selves. Just imagine this: we cant even deal with our own." https://medium.com/@tatian/its-ok-to-not-be-ok-4cc49b188765 - If you need mental health support specifically related to autism you can contact our Autism Advisors for resources. 03.01.2022 Today, Minister for Education James Merlino announced that the Victorian budget will make significant investment in schools, aiming to transform support for students with disability in Victorian government schools. Amaze welcomes the announcement, which is a recognition of the need for dramatic change. Amaze CEO Fiona Sharkie has expressed that this investment should help our state schools take great strides towards better supporting autistic students and others with disabi...lity. For too long schools have not had the capacity to create learning environments where students with disability can achieve what they are truly capable of. "Around one third of autistic students do not make it past year 10 with many leaving school even earlier. The gap in education outcomes compared with their peers without disability is enormous and unacceptable. Read the full statements on our website here:

01.01.2022 Amaze today welcomes the Federal Governments commitment to implementing recommendations of the Tune Review, which should deliver much needed improvements for participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The Tune Review found the NDIS is generally working well for adults with a physical disability, but not so well for others. Many autistic people are dissatisfied with their NDIS experience: low level of autism understanding among NDIS planners, lack of inf...ormation and support for participants to navigate the planning process; inadequate funding; and difficulty in accessing services are challenges constantly reported on by autistic participants. Read our full statement, as well as the announcements by the government and the NDIA, on our website.
