24.01.2022 What is the ultimate test of a professional engine builder/tuner? A time slip? A dyno sheet? A used oil test?... Or all of the above? Most of you will answer all of the above but its not always about outright power or the quickest/fastest times. The true test is how healthy your engine is despite the punishment you put it through. One of the most important points to look for is FUEL DILUTION. The fearful tuner will overfuel. (Fear of another blown engine) The cocky tuner will underfuel. (Chasing the big dyno numbers) The professional tuner will get it just right erring on the side of caution to prolong engine life. Lets look at a prime example of this. Revzone have a customer of theirs who recently had a high-end build completed on his R35. It has a HKS GT800 kit on an engine built in-house. It runs all the required bolt-ons and mods including ID1700s and a bespoke design fuel system among a long list of undisclosed trade secrets. It runs E85 and makes about 550kw @ 20psi and just so happens to run Motul 300V Chrono 10W40. So after plenty of enjoyment on the streets of Melbourne and a trek up to Jamboree last year to run a 10 flat, we took a sample of the oil to confirm the condition of the engine. See the attached results for yourself and most importantly, right down the bottom - Fuel Dilution is @ 1.4%. Right in the sweet spot between 0% and 3%. Nothing short of perfect given that it runs id1700s on E85 AND had a drain interval of 5,000kms.
