15.01.2022 +58% more lifetime profit from the Coopex Montbeliarde x HF cows compared to their Holstein herdmates! The results are in and now available. Crossbreds were far more profitable than their Holstein herdmates in a 10-year study with high-performance Minnesota dairy herds by Dr. Amy Hazel, Dr. Brad Heins, and Dr. Les Hansen from the University of Minnesota.... Unlike previous research on crossbreeding of dairy cattle, this 10-year study had controlled and balanced enrollment of foundation cows, had a clear design, used high-ranking proven A.I. bulls for all breeds (Holstein, Viking Red, and Montbeliarde), and had dedicated recording of data by the high-performance participating herds. Genetics companies and breed societies had no input into the design and control of the study to ensure a non biased outcome so commercial dairy producers can rely on the data being produced compared apples with apples. The 3-way crossbreed cows starting with a foundation HF cow, the HF x Monty x Red combination was 32% and the HF x Red x Monty combination was 33% more profitable over it's lifetime than their Holstein herdmates. The Crossbred cows had 4.8% less dry matter intake in 1st lactation and 6.5% less dry matter intake in 2nd and 3rd lactations than their HO herdmates with absolutely no difference for fat + protein production (kg). 06.01.2022 Ist calf for the spring calving season here on the farm at Tyers, Gippsland, mum is by PAGANNINI, a Coopex Monty that worked a treat in Australia's pasture based systems, she is a 4-way cross, MOxRedxJxHF. Not hard to see why the Large Scale Crossbreeding Study in Minnesota had the 3-way crosses @ 33% more lifetime profit and the Monty x HF +58% more lifetime profit than their Holstein herdmates. Huge difference and no surprise that the figures are very similar to those I kept from my herd having the 3-way crosses 27% more profitable for my system than their Holstein herd mates.
