25.01.2022 Avalanche Summary No avalanche activity Snowpack Summary With the rain event on Wed (30/10/2020) the snowpack is now wet and saturated again.... We are still seeing cool night temps so the surface of the snowpack is undergoing a spring melt / freeze cycle still No instabilities are being observed in the snowpack so it’s a great chance to get up high and take advantage of the spring snowpack which was bolstered by the last snow we received last week. . . . #backcountry #snowsafetyaustralia #avalanche #mammutausnz #xtm_performance #xtm #rhythmboardstore #voileusa . @voilemfg @mammutausnz @rhythmsnowboardshop @snowsafetyaustralia @xtm_performance See more

19.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 31/08/20 No recent avalanche activity Snowpack Summary The top 60 cm of the snowpack is very wet. Within the top 65 cm of the snowpack there are 3 layers of buried surface hoar (@26 cm, 39 cm and 52 cm) and a layer of graupel @ 61 cm. The layers at 26 and 52 had moderate to hard Compression Test results and we had a moderate Shovel Shear result... @ 61 cm We had multiple Compression Test very easy results while cutting the back of the column at ground (95 cm) The snowpack below 1900 m early in the mornings will have a very thick melt/freeze crust until it becomes solar affected around midday. Primary concern is still the Wet slab failing on layers of buried surface hoar / graupel and the slab could vary in size from 26 cm to 61 cm. Secondary concern is cornice fall as the weather stays very warm over the next few days with freeze levels raising to 2900 m on Thursday. Tertiary concern is Deep Persistent Slab with the fist resistance layer at the bottom of the snowpack on the ground. This failed multiple times when cutting the snow columns. Extra caution should be used when skiing steep terrain on aspects North West through East to South for Wet Slab avalanches. Cornice failures are still a concern as this very warm weather continues, so stay off cornices and keep a safe distance while touring near them. The Persistent Deep Slab problem was evident from the avalanche to ground earlier in August and testing still shows that the bond of the snowpack to the ground is poor. Keep this in mind as the snowpack becomes heavier over the next few day with these warmer temperatures.. . . #backcountry #snowsafetyaustralia #avalanche #mammutausnz #xtm_performance #xtm #rhythmboardstore #voileusa . @voilemfg @mammutausnz @rhythmsnowboardshop @snowsafetyaustralia @xtm_performance @ Kosciuszko National Park www.avalancheaustralia.com.au
17.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 29/08/2020 Slab Avalanche Mount Tate Size 1 Snowpack Summary With the warm days and cold nights a 10cm melt / freeze crust is apparent on elevations below the alpine.... Once in the alpine the snow is wet and has become sticky. Yesterday we found 2cm of wind blown snow and large amounts of graupel in the alpine on lee slopes. The primary concern is now the heavy solar affected snow failing on steep sunny aspects. Of secondary concern is still the cornice fail problem which has been in play since early in the week. As the snow gets heavier due to warming temperature will may see natural cornice falls and skier triggered slides. . . . . #backcountry #snowsafetyaustralia #avalanche #mammutausnz #xtm_performance #xtm #rhythmboardstore #voileusa . @voilemfg @mammutausnz @rhythmsnowboardshop @snowsafetyaustralia @xtm_performance @ Kosciuszko National Park See more

10.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 07/09/20 Cornice fall Gills Knob Snowpack Summary Height of snowpack 80cm... The snow pack is very wet. Mornings are showing a thick melt freeze crust that is softening around 10am. When soft the slopes are skiing well Snow pack tests found easy Shovel shear test failing on the buried layer of graupel @ 48cm. Compression test results showed moderate sudden collapse results @ on old buried surface hoar and hard resistive planar results on the buried graupel @ 48cm. The message is the same as it has been for a while now Extra caution should be used when skiing steep terrain on aspects North West through East to South for Wet Slab avalanches. Cornice failures are still a concern as this very warm weather continues, so stay off cornices and keep a safe distance while touring near them. 05.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 04/08/20 No recent avalanche activity Snowpack Summary Height of snowpack 80cm... The top 60 cm of the snowpack is very wet. Within the top 60 cm of the snowpack there are 2 layers with different densities, fist resistant snow from 0-25 and 1 finger resistant snow from 25-60cm. The layer of graupel above the buried melt / freeze crust was no evident today. At 60cm there is an old melt freeze crust that is starting to soften as the whole snow pack is now very wet and isothermal. Primary concern is still the Wet slab failing on layers at 25 cm and 60 cm. Secondary concern is cornice fall as the weather stays very warm over the next few days with freeze levels between 1800-3100m. Extra caution should be used when skiing steep terrain on aspects North West through East to South for Wet Slab avalanches. Cornice failures are still a concern as this very warm weather continues, so stay off cornices and keep a safe distance while touring near them. 04.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 27/08/2020 Slab Avalanche Watson's Creek Cornice fall at Gills Knob Cornice fall East face Kosi Cornice ... Snowpack Summary With sunny days and cold nights the new snow from the last storm cycle is still skiing well after 4 days since the last snow falls. We have noticed that the tops of the ridge lines are wind scoured and are icy on shaded windward aspects. The primary concern currently is wind slab and the layer of buried surface hoar at 40cm. This was evident with the slab avalanche at Watson's Creek on the weekend. Our secondary concern is cornice falls. We have seen signs of fallen cornices at Gills Knob and East face Kosi cornice in the last 4 days. Extra caution should be used when skiing steep terrain Lee to the North West Cornice failure is our secondary concern so stay of cornices and stay well clear of overhead cornice while in the backcountry. 03.01.2022 Field obs and reports are in. The new snow as expected is not bonded to the surface it fell on. The colder temps last night froze the very wet snowpack and the new snow fell at night and therefore has not bonded to the freeze layer on the old snow. Extra care needs to be taken if the wind slab grows tonight with the expected snowfall and strengthening winds.

01.01.2022 Some words on the past winter here in Australia.
01.01.2022 That’s a wrap. 2020 season done and dusted here at Avalanche Australia. Great winter here in Australia and happy to say major incident free! Forecasting starts again in June 2021. www.avalancheaustralia.com.au . .... . . #backcountry #snowsafetyaustralia #avalanche #mammutausnz #xtm_performance #xtm #rhythmboardstore #voileusa . @voilemfg @mammutausnz @rhythmsnowboardshop @snowsafetyaustralia @xtm_performance See more
01.01.2022 NSW Avalanche Summary 24/09/2020 No avalanche activity Snowpack Summary New snow has arrived and with it came wind.... 5-10cm of snow fell on the 23/09/20 and more is on the way. This new snow snow has fallen on a wet saturated snowpack so we will be out assessing how well it has bonded and continue to monitor this as more loading continues over the next few days. Spring is on the back step with cold night temps and warmer day temps so this should keep things sane for the short term. This might be the last time to get the touring out and hit some fresh snow while it lasts. Be mindful of cornices above while touring and make conservative decisions on steeper lee slopes. . . . #backcountry #snowsafetyaustralia #avalanche #mammutausnz #xtm_performance #xtm #rhythmboardstore #voileusa #snowscience @voilemfg @mammutausnz @rhythmsnowboardshop @snowsafetyaustralia @xtm_performance See more
