24.01.2022 Obviously Sean has nothing to do with himself...

24.01.2022 So, we have been pretty busy improving our little house for the comfort of our guests. A new wood heater now heats the house to ridiculously hot temperatures, new windows keep the heat in and the new internal doors help it get directed into the rooms. We have also increased the on-site parking to six cars. The new retaining walls may not be finished by Friday when our guests start arriving, but hey that's how 2020 rolls.... And, the ugly chook shed has been demolished Take care people and visit Derby.

20.01.2022 There is something about Derby...

20.01.2022 On This Day 28th February (1912) Kookaburras released in Tasmania 108 years ago today six (6) kookaburras were released in the Scottsdale area. Despite what... many Tasmanians believe, the kookaburra is not native to Tasmania but was introduced a number of times. In 1912 The Examiner’s Scottsdale correspondent reported that Mr C Lade had imported six of the birds and released them on his property ‘Northbourne’. Mr Lade brought over from the mainland six kookaburras, or laughing jackasses, which were liberated on the Northbourne property. Two unfortunately died, but the others are seemingly content with their surroundings, are doing well and enjoy their location. It is to be hoped they will receive better treatment than those liberated at Witterhouse some years ago, which were shot at by some pot-hunters and doubtless the others shared a similar fate elsewhere. They are interested birds, as well as useful. The Laughing Kookaburra is instantly recognisable in both plumage and voice. It is generally off-white below, faintly barred with dark brown, and brown on the back and wings. The tail is more rufous, broadly barred with black. There is a conspicuous dark brown eye-stripe through the face. It is one of the larger members of the kingfisher family. The Laughing Kookaburra inhabits most areas where there are suitable trees. Laughing Kookaburras feed mostly on insects, worms and crustaceans, although small snakes, mammals, frogs and birds may also be eaten. Prey is seized by pouncing from a suitable perch. Small prey is eaten whole, but larger prey is killed by bashing it against the ground or tree branch. Laughing Kookaburras are believed to pair for life. The nest is a bare chamber in a naturally occurring tree hollow or in a burrow excavated in an arboreal (tree-dwelling) termite mound. Both sexes share the incubation duties and both care for the young. Other Laughing Kookaburras, usually offspring of the previous one to two years, act as 'helpers' during the breeding season. Every bird in the group shares all parenting duties.

14.01.2022 Derby is truly an amazing place. This story has been kept quiet, but the story is out. Gold has been found and big gold! This nugget was found two weeks ago whilst preparing for the Enduro World Series next year.

12.01.2022 Derby is open, the trails are open, we are open for you. But, apparently Vertigo MTB are closing their business for a while. This is no reason not to visit Derby, there are plenty of other options for your airport pick ups and Derby shuttles, MAD MTB, Tas Premium MTB Shuttles, Up Down Around MTB and Tailored Trails are all open and ready to assist. Please continue to visit Derby and use the local businesses which remain open to provide MTB riders with a quality service.... #talkderbytome

07.01.2022 Derby to Branxholm trail is a ripper folks. It's a great introduction to riding on dirt, very family / kid friendly. It's mainly flat, apart from a few mild gra...dients. Very smooth ie. pram friendly. Also believe it be popular with walkers, so please slow down when passing. You do have to cross the road, so don't just send the little kids along it for a ride while you sleep in! Adds the option to ride to Branxholm to a feed and roll back again, in Tassie's awesome summer twilight eveningsd
