18.01.2022 Free mini-webinar........... I thought this might interest some people; especially the information about dogs that become visibly more active when problem solving and those that slow down and disengage when facing a challenge. The recording came about because I was finishing up an FDSA webinar, and as per usual it was going to be too long! Lol. So I needed to delete a few slides. Then I decided there were a couple of slides about frustration that I thought were interesting..., and it was a bit of a waste to delete them. Instead, I decided to separate them out, add a couple more, and record myself discussing these slides in a little mini-webinar. So for anyone who’s interested here’s some information about frustration in dogs. There’s an introduction discussing the benefits and issues associated with frustration, and then I go on to discuss the different approaches dogs may take to problem solving. In this section I talk about the differences between dogs that visibly increase energy (barking, spinning, etc) as they arouse, and those who exhibit behavioural inhibition (slow down, stare vacantly, walk away, etc) as they arouse in response to frustration / stress / anxiety. https://youtu.be/VwUC5RBB3ac

15.01.2022 Photo from last weekend’s practice trial at Tamworth. This is Vincent in the heeling section. I think this must have been the slow pace portion. He’s got such a great expression

14.01.2022 Melissa Breau from Fenzi Dog Sports Academy interviewed me this week. We covered lots of topics - all related to Behaviour Modification. Leash reactivity, sound sensitively and concepts like the Premack Principle, habituation, systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning. Here’s a link to the podcast. https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com//e206-sharon-carroll

12.01.2022 Training on the outside of the off-leash dog park to improve focus. Hard work for baby Vincent to have to ignore the loose dogs in the off-leash park on one sid...e, and the children playing at the child care center on the other side (that’s the squeals you can hear). Not the most precise heeling work, but he’s having to work really hard just to stay focused on me, especially considering how much he really wanted to go and play with the dogs!! Such a good boy!!! He earned lots of treats today. See more

07.01.2022 Join me for my next Fenzi Dog Sports Academy webinar - "Behavior Modification - Practical Solutions for Behavior Issues". Live Q&A after the presentation - Thurs Feb 25 6pm PT (that's Friday in Australia). If you can't watch live that's ok, you will have access to the recording for 12 months - so you can watch when convenient. Must be purchased prior to live airing though - Only USD$19.95 https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/buy-webinar In this webinar we look at ...a range of behavior modification protocols and the situations where they can be used to greatest effect. We discuss desensitization / counterconditioning, functional reinforcement, effective use of the Premack principle, training for habituation, distraction techniques, and when to incorporate a cued alternative behavior. Some of the specific behaviors we discuss include: * On-leash chasing behaviors (cars, bicycles, skateboards, joggers). * Reactivity and aggression toward unknown people and/or dogs. * Issues with over-arousal and/or aggression when off-leash with other dogs. * Running / barking at property fence lines (reacting to people/dogs passing by, and/or activity in neighboring yards). * Hypervigilance and barking at windows from within the home. * Over-excitement / arousal when travelling in a vehicle. * Separation-related problems (anxiety-based and non-anxiety based). * Noise reactivity. * Dogs that don’t enjoy physical handling. * Fear-related avoidance behaviors. We also lightly touch on protocols for a selection of other in-home undesirable behaviors such as counter-surfing, overexcited greeting of visitors, jumping up on people, and over-excitement when preparing food or preparing to go for a walk / drive. Some of the behavior modification protocols discussed in this webinar involve the use of food, this in itself is a stopping point for some people. Many dogs reject food in certain situations, whilst other dogs are so focused on the presence of treats, that their food-related behavior becomes problematic. We discuss both of these issues. Finally, a lack of confidence and resilience can be key factors in the development and continuation of many behavioral issues, so in this webinar we also review the steps that can be taken to improve overall confidence and resilience in dogs.
