24.01.2022 Some shearing day shots taken by our scribe. The yarding worked perfectly (we now just need to use a more permanent gate securing method than bale twine), the shed worked perfectly ( thanks again Hugh Salmon the National Chippy) and the sheep were beautiful (as always). We finally managed to combine the rams in one paddock (nothing overcomes testosterone, in the ovine world at least, quite like group nudity) and the lambs quickly managed to find their mothers despite their nakedness Thanks again to James, our patient and caring shearer, to Maureen and Gerry, our mentors from Fairfield Finns, and to Torz, our scribe and photographer Laying out in the paddock with lambs under he sky at the end of the day was the perfect end to a month of unremitting mad work, exhaustion and anxiety. We wouldn’t have it any other way

24.01.2022 Esther, showing one of the famous 5 the finer points of rumination. Their little woollen vests are perfect Thanks to our lovely neighbours for this wonderful gesture

23.01.2022 Not to be outdone, and with apologies for poor cinematography, Freda presented us with two feisty ram lambs @ 9.30pm. So it was a ram night after that pink sky

22.01.2022 Yarding for the shearing shed taking shape. Now just got to build / modify and hang about 10 gates this week.... Life will be so much better not having to herd cats around a big paddock to get them into yarding. 90% of our sheep come when they’re called. The remainder occupy 90% of the work....

22.01.2022 Let’s do The womb. To think there were these four, plus one, inside Esther 11 days ago. My mind is perpetually boggled

21.01.2022 Tapio (Taps) extremely enjoying a scratch behind the ears He’s such a little chiller

17.01.2022 Oprah, the maiden, lambed first A lovely little black lamb with white face and black eyes @ 8.30pm last night.

16.01.2022 The reason, well one of the main reasons, we first fell in love with Finnsheep. Yorrick, the handsome devil, has proven to be an excellent ram, siring dozens of excellent pure Finn lambs to carry on his legacy He’s by no means done yet either

16.01.2022 Val and her lambs Harald, Liv and Inge enjoying some quiet time in the wool shed. With the better Spring weather expected later in the week, they’ll get their first encounter (and taste) of pasture in the yard outside. Family-wise, they really are the gold standard in Finns

15.01.2022 Jessie lambed between 2.30 and 3.30am this morning. 3 of Bob’s progeny (1 ram and 2 ewes) All doing well

15.01.2022 One of the famous 5 developed a bit of Hypothermia this morning, and her deterioration was rapid. We’ve brought her into the ICU, got her core temperature back to close to normal and have managed to milk her mum Esther to the tune of about 30ml. Getting this into her with a syringe and she’s even got the suckling reflex going. We’ll just have ride shotgun for her throughout the next 24 hours, but, early days, it looks like we’ll pull her through

14.01.2022 Sunset through the window of the wool shed. What’s that they say about pink sky at night... Two ewes have gone into labour simultaneously, at opposite ends of the shed! One, Oprah, is a maiden, the other, Freda, a seasoned campaigner. Both Bobbed, I.e both impregnated by Bob, Freda by backing up to a ringlock fence Stay tuned....

12.01.2022 Val(da) lambing late this afternoon. 2 ewes and a ram She’s a great Mum so the triplets should be a fine way to see her into retirement

12.01.2022 Ok, so a stab at some names for our five lambs born yesterday to Esther, 4 of whom are ewes and one ram. So: Emily Irene Nelly... Louise and Henry Please by all means let me know any alternatives, but I did like the story of this Famous Five

10.01.2022 Sadly, we lost Nellie (one of f the Famous 5) despite our, and her best efforts after a brush with hypothermia The Famous 5(-1) are 8 days old now and all thriving. We’re supplementing Pinky a bit but all 4 are being pretty well provided for by their mum Esther So, 3 ewes and a ram lamb, all of whom are being molly coddled way too much

10.01.2022 Val’s 3 amigos enjoying a rare rest in between bouncing off everything in their pen, themselves included

09.01.2022 Liv, Inge and Harald, demonstrating the gold standard in Finn lamb after 1 week of life on 12 legs We think we’ll leave Harald entire. His parentage is too elite to wether him. The girls will have an unrelated white ewe put over them in a year or two and Val’s dynasty will go on. She’s given us 5 lovely ewe lambs and a granddaughter in 3 years! Since all this year’s lambs will share her ear tag colour (purple) this will likely be her last in lamb, but we’ll see how she’s looking and feeling next April for one last encore performance

08.01.2022 Mowed a spot where the yarding for the shearing shed needs to go. There was a large and very active Copperhead at the bottom of the in ramp yesterday, but fortunately it had moved on since then. Probably dining out on the mice that had been attracted to the shed by the straw for the lambing ewes. Circles of life Gotta get the yarding in by November 14th for shearing Don’t hurry....but run both ways

07.01.2022 Oprah’s boy Tapio having a pee and contemplating the fool sitting in his pen. He’s such a laid back and friendly little bloke

07.01.2022 Esther being cloud 9

07.01.2022 And for the ladies....a tasteful nude shot of the diminutive stud-muffin Luigi Thanks Nat from Brooklands, and hopefully we’ll be able to get over your way in the next week or three to give the little bloke a hug and check out some fleeces

06.01.2022 It’s that time of year again Pancho and Lefty, the three amigos, getting a haircut before Summer

05.01.2022 Henri modelling the pitfalls of suckling from the rear Esther has told him not to on numerous occasions. Maybe now, finally, he’s got the message

05.01.2022 2 down (hung) 9 to go, in 3 days. Easy peasy unless you’re hanging hundred year old gates with odd strap hinges and odd gudgeons Those Finns better appreciate the work that’s gone into facilitating their smooth flow through the yarding and the shearing process on Saturday

05.01.2022 Well worth watching.

04.01.2022 Pancho and Lefty poste clip. They look so undernourished after shearing, but our shearer confirms they’re in excellent condition

04.01.2022 Thelma and LouiseThelma (at the back) is the bottle fed of these two little rascals, and Louise (foreground) just wants the same level of affection, which she gets of course. They were the only 2 survivors out of quads born to their mum who was understandably pretty befuddled at the chaos unfolding in the dark of her pen in the Hilton. Happily, both these girls have gone from strength to strength and will continue to enjoy mollycoddled life

04.01.2022 A melancholy morning This ewe was (now obviously) another of Bob’s through the fence conquests. Delivered one coloured ram (deceased) breech presentation this morning. We had to help her deliver this little bloke, and not a moment too soon as he was quickly followed by two more live lambs. Mum’s had a shot of antibiotics to counter any effects of an invasive delivery, but she’s recovering well and her two boys are now up and about, as is she An emotional roller coaster, including the steepest learning curve, this morning.

03.01.2022 The devilishly handsome Luigi, loading up for his first clipping at Brooklands Farm. We miss this little bloke, but we know he’s loved and well looked after Looking forward to seeing him clipped, and eventually, his progeny

03.01.2022 Erika, feigning pregnancy again this year, demonstrating mastery of the door to the catching pen

01.01.2022 Jessie’s three little colourful lambs have finally come around, in a big way. Here’s a pic’ of Onesie (she was the first born) getting up close and personal Another group pic’ features her sister Astro, her brother Zorro and a bunch of Esther’s / Frida’s white lambs. They bring great joy to Covid life
