25.01.2022 Today we remember the devastating loss of five CFA volunteer firefighters from Geelong West Fire Brigade on the 2nd of December 1998 at the Linton Bushfire when... their tanker was entrapped and engulfed in fire following an unexpected wind change. They are numbered among those who have made our country great, through sacrifice in the service of others, for they will truly become part of the Australian story. Rest In Peace Matthew Armstrong, aged 17 Jason Thomas, aged 25 Chris Evans, aged 27 Stuart Davidson, aged 28 Garry Vredeveldt, aged 47 Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten

22.01.2022 PLEASE! Due to the fire risk, we ask you this New Years Eve to put away the illegal fireworks. If our crews are called to any incident involving illegal firewor...ks, Victoria Police will be called and you will face stiff fines and penalties. Again, we can't make it any more clear, this NYE = NO FIREWORKS. #PleaseNoFireworksThisNYE #ZeroTolerance #BigFinesAndPenalties

19.01.2022 A request from your local fire brigade. We are tired. Physically and mentally. While we are well aware it is New Year's Eve tonight, can you please refrain fr...om: - Fireworks. They're illegal and dangerous. - Giant Bonfires. Also illegal. - Doing other silly things that require fire trucks. We're all volunteers, and we want nothing more than to spend the night with our families, not out chasing fires around or arguing with you about 'your right to have a bonfire etc because...' Please stay safe. If you need us, we're here! 24/7/365 Happy New Year. Captain Dave.

11.01.2022 More warm days With mother nature really showing her shine this week it serves as a timely reminder to ensure that we are prepared for the coming Fire Danger... Period. Numerous municipalities around the state have already entered the Fire Danger Period. YOU need to ensure that you have a bushfire survival plan if you live in a hazard-prone area to ensure that you are FIRE READY! More information can be found at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/your-bushfire-plan

10.01.2022 Good morning, we have recieved quite alot messages asking if people should leave town. At this stage were saying it's up to the individual and your ability to leave quickly. If a fire starts any were near avenel then leave straight away do not hesitate. It's also a little concerning that not everyone has the Vic emergancy app. Please down load it and make sure notifications are on. If you have elderly neighbours or know anyone who may struggle to leave quickly please contact them and work out a way of helping them if required. I have attached a photo of the app needed. Please stay safe and make sure you have a fire plan in place.

06.01.2022 Why do fires burn faster uphill? As a fire travels uphill, there's less space between the flames and new fuel to burn. Radiant heat from the fire also prehe...ats the fuel in front of it, making the fuel easier to ignite. The steeper the land, the faster a bushfire will spread; for every 10 degrees in uphill slope, the speed of a fire will double. On the other hand, with fires moving downhill there's more distance between the flames and new fuel, so fires will spread more slowly.
