25.01.2022 Protein junky? When we eat protein, our body breaks it down into small pieces called ‘amino acids’. These are the building blocks of life! The body uses them to make protein for growth and repair, as well as many other functions. Our bodies produce some of these amino acids (known as ‘non-essential amino acids’), but not all of them. We must get these ‘essential’ amino acids from the food we eat. Keep eating that protein people! #osteo #osteopathy #aminoacids #protein

Please call to make an appointment today. #osteo #osteopathy #scheuermannsdisease #hyperkyphosis

15.01.2022 Any prolonged posture is a bad posture. Move often #Repost @kinectmd EFFECTS OF ON THE LUMBAR SPINE... As many of us stay indoors and spend a lot of time sitting it's important that we understand the negative impact prolonged static sitting can have on the spine. One study published by Dr. Jack Callaghan & Dr. Stuart McGill at University of Waterloo Department of Kinesiology examined lumbar spine kinematics, spinal joint loads & trunk muscle activation patterns during a prolonged (2h) period of sitting. The shown above shows L4/L5 joint compression forces calculated during 3min of standing, before & after sitting for 2h. The L4/L5 forces were calculated using an anatomically complex, dynamic EMG-driven low back model incorporating 104 muscles. As shown in the above the L4/L5 compression force was increased for all subjects after 2hrs of sitting. The is either due to low, but prolonged muscle contraction &/or prolonged flexed postures of the spine leading to accumulated damage to the posterior component of the intervertebral disc. This shows that standing appears to be a good rest from sitting, for the passive tissues, given the change in lumbar spine posture & shift in loading of the posture-dependent passive tissues. Therefore, standing, used alternatively as a rest from sitting, could form a basis for injury prevention when designing work. However, it is important to note that the constant loading with little dynamic movement present in both standing & sitting would provide little rest/change for muscular activation levels & the resultant low back loads. The human body requires movement both to nourish structures such as the nucleus pulposus & the intervertebral disc. The Callaghan & McGill study also found that individuals who adopted multiple sitting postures & cycled between them across a wider band of lumbar spinal motion also created motion that appeared to prevent static loads on the spine. Overall, this suggests that walking could be a beneficial rest activity from prolonged sitting &/or standing. Therefore it's important that we stay moving throughout this period of social distancing.

The aim is to reduce movement of the public and face-to-face contact as much as possible. These directives are about protecting the public and protecting health workers. We are obliged to critically consider if the service is essentia...l for the patient/client in the next 6 week period. Conditions which may result in you attending the emergency room, or prevent you from performing essential activities of daily living such as caring for children if left untreated. 04.01.2022 THE VAGUS NERVE A seemingly never-ending branching nerve that connects most of our major organs to our brain . Its the longest cranial nerve in our body, ...one for the right side and one for the left. And is largely responsible for the #mindbody connection for its role as a mediator between thinking and feeling, you know our gut feeling. The vagus nerve is the queen of the parasympathetic nervous system. The rest and digest or the #chillout nerve. So the more we do things to activate the #vagus nerve (like deep #breathing), the most we combat the effects of its opposer, the sympathetic nervous system - the fight or flight, rushing around, have to do something, #stress releasing one. A few other functions of the vagus nerve, just to name a few: slows your heart rate and respiration. lowers blood pressure. helps with calmness and relaxation. controls involuntary muscles in the digestive system, therefore, aiding digestion. taste sensation. movement function for the muscles in the neck responsible for swallowing and speech. gut-brain communication. reduces inflammation.
