23.01.2022 The Lancasters journey to the Aviation Heritage Museum. Many visitors wonder how we get these large and glorious aircraft into the hangars. The Lancasters move took a large squad of volunteers one early Saturday morning in 1979 and many moving parts! Firstly, a Bellway slewing crane slowly lifted NX 622s rear fuselage and swung it onto a specially-prepared dolly, which was attached to a turntable on a Kenworth prime mover. Semi-trailers were loaded with outer engines, win...gs, and tail sections before the convoy, accompanied by the crane, two service vehicles and a radio liaison van from the Department of Civil Aviation, trundled off towards its new Bull Creek destination. Fun Fact: the first part of the journey required crossing the airports main runway which had been closed to air traffic until the convoy was clear!

Visit https://aviationmuseumwa.org.au/tours-and-experiences/ for further details.

19.01.2022 Last month our new Bomber Command Virtual Reality opened and so far, it has been well received by our visitors. Pictured here is Kim who brought her two sons, Darcy, and Connor to test out the virtual reality experience for themselves. Once the boys had each flown their mission, Museum Manager Trevor Fettis invited the boys to be guinea pigs in the Young Aviators area being developed at the museum. ... Activities included: Flying a World War I Sopwith Camel at an English Airfield using a radio control box and a visual display on a large TV screen. Viewing videos on Gliding for Juniors and How a Gas Turbine Engine Works. They gave the area a tick of approval, rating it a 9 and 10/10 for the Camel experience and enjoyed the videos. They will be encouraging their friends to visit the museum to experience these newfound activities for themselves. Thanks Kim, Darcy and Connor for visiting!

18.01.2022 No explanation needed when this picture says more than a thousand words! It shows what an incredible plane the Lancaster was and just how big it was.
17.01.2022 The Aviation Heritage Museum has so much history that some have no idea where to start. Look at this beautiful old pilot license renewal from 1937. Our museum features not only all things planes but also everything related to aviation. With so much history in one place, it is easy to get lost in time. This wonderful pilot license renewal from 1937 belonged to Cyril Nathaniel Kleinig. Cyril, a true pioneer in the aviation world was a pilot and airline manager for MacRobertso...n-Miller Aviation Co. Ltd. His dedication and enthusiasm made him a real leader in the travel industry and was widely acknowledged for his role in growing tourism in Western Australia. We feel honoured to hold something so valuable to Cyril Kleinig such as his pilot certificate and license in our museum.

17.01.2022 As the final Boing 747 has left into early retirement not too long ago, one enthusiastic filmmaker wanted to capture the historic moment and has therefore created a short film to preserve it for history. The film features audio from the cockpit during the final flight and is available on his YouTube channel called ‘Under The Hangar’ which he created to support the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS). What a great way to keep some of our aviation history alive!
16.01.2022 Although Summer is on its way, we are still experiencing some rainy days during the beginning of Spring. 12.01.2022 Experience for yourself, a snippet of what the young men faced during the 1943 Berlin Blitz. The virtual reality cannot truly convey the unimaginable dangers they went through to secure our freedom. Their extraordinary courage and sacrifice shall never be forgotten, and we will do our absolute best to ensure they are still remembered. Inside a heavy bomber, the crew members would have to cope with the long and tense outward trip to the target, the release of the bombs and th...e fear of being hit by flak or by shells from a night fighter. Our Bomber Command Virtual Reality experience takes you on a night-time bombing mission during September 1943 as a recording by BBC reporters. The details: Bookings available on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays $25 per person (due to the nature of the material it is advised that the experience is suitable for 13 years and older). Allow 30 minutes from start to finish to immerse yourself in this experience. Bookings can be made prior to arriving at the museum or on arrival. Book today, to immerse yourself in this surreal historical moment.
12.01.2022 In February 2020, the Aviation Heritage Museum welcomed the arrival of the Hawker Hunter from the RAN base at HMAS Albatross, Nowra NSW. It was carefully dismantled and loaded onto a truck making the journey west for our volunteer crew to being restoring ready do display purposes. COVID-19 may have slowed down our eager volunteers to work on this new arrival but now we have a few volunteers back in our restoration warehouse back on the tools working away to restore and piece this wonderful aircraft back together. Currently they are working on building the Hawker Hunters new wing station. Stay tuned for more updates on the restoration process!

08.01.2022 How about this beautiful old picture from the 1950s? Firstly, established as RAAF Station Forest Hill in 1940, the base formed one of numerous Empire Air Training Scheme bases in Riverina. After flying operations were discontinued in the final years of war, it became home to a maintenance unit. (No 5 Aircraft Depot). In 1952, the base was officially renamed as RAAF Base Wagga to align with the City of Wagga Wagga more closely.
08.01.2022 Located in our Northern hangar we honour those in the WAAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force) and WRAAF (Women’s Royal Australian Air Force). Despite many opinions that women had no place in the services during the mid-thirties, by 1942-43, it was realised that there was a critical need for educated women in the greatly expanding RAAF. Today, RAAFA has special purpose branches that epitomise camaraderie, compassion, and community, one of these being the Women in Air F...orce Branch. Formed in April 1985, today the Branch has over 90 members and foster camaraderie between women who had previously served in the WRAAF. Read more about the RAAFA branch in the latest Air Mail edition and next time you are visiting the museum, head to the Northern Hangar for a lesson in history on how far women in aviation has come. www.aviationmuseumwa.org.au/raafa-air-mail-october-novembe/

03.01.2022 As you enter the Aviation Heritage Museum, one of the first aircraft visitors see is the Consolidated Catalina which was designed around the concept of a Maritime Patrol Bomber. As far as America was concerned, a Catalina was a ‘PBY’. Interesting fact... PB was US Navy-speak for Patrol Bomber. The Navy had a single letter designation for each manufacturer who supplied items like aircraft and Y was the letter for the Consolidated Aircraft Company, therefore PBY meant a Pat...rol Bomber built by Consolidated. View the fascinating and detailed history of this popular aircraft located in the Southern Hangar of the museum. Can’t make it to the museum soon? Visit www.aviationmuseumwa.org.au/aircraft-collection/ for details of our main displayed aircraft.
