12.01.2022 Conquer Challenges, our Student Video Competition is closing soon The theme is relatable at school, and in life, as we often come across times where we are made to feel uncomfortable. But, when we adapt, regroup and take on these challenges we can learn a great deal from ourselves and those around us. AVID is here to help you build the skills and the mindset to conquer the difficulties you might face, so you can emerge stronger on the other side. In a video, between 2-4 m...inutes long, tell us how you have overcome challenges in your life, how AVID has helped you along the way and what you’ve learned in the process. How can my students apply? Students should upload a link to a short video (2-4 minutes) explaining how AVID has helped them to overcome challenges and learn from the experience. This could be based on a personal experience. See the Task Guiding Prompts section on the website for further information. The winners will each receive a prize and have the opportunity to showcase their work at this year’s National Conference. Students can submit individual or group entries. 06.01.2022 It is with a touch of sadness but more of celebration to recognise Shayne Player’s retirement this year. Today, is in fact her last day. Shayne is the Principal at Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College Tumbi Umbi Campus which was one of the first AVID schools in Australia. Shayne has been one of the many AVID principals who has changed and transformed their schools and the outcomes of their students. She has mentored countless school leaders across Australia and helped AVID to est...ablish a firm foothold in NSW. In 2012, Shayne was the recipient of AITSL’s Principal of the Year Award. Her legacy is an example to us all. AVID Australia’s Director, Claire Brown, has reflected on Shayne’ contribution to her school, teachers, students and building and living the AVID ethos. Today, 1000s of teachers and young people are achieving their potential because they were fortunate to learn from Shayne Player. We are all better for the fact that Shayne chose teaching as the profession in which to dedicate her life. Every day, Shayne has modelled for teachers and students alike how to meet challenges, and how we should all hold to the highest levels of integrity in everything we do. Thank you for inspiring all of us to be our best selves, Shayne. We are all better people for dancing in your light. AVID Australia wishes to recognise and thank all teachers for the work they do every day. Whether in a Zoom breakout room or a physical classroom, teachers inspire and enable students to pursue their goals and fulfil their potential. As an education organisation that understands how powerful the teaching profession can be in changing student lives, know that your work is valued and that what you do (as our Director frequently says) is rocket science. Frankly, if it was up to us, we would celebrate World Teachers’ Day all day, every day! From everyone at AVID Australia, we wish Shayne the very best in her retirement.
