25.01.2022 Everyone taking notes?

25.01.2022 In the garden with the chooks when reading this post...

24.01.2022 Some Black Sunflowers #Avigrain have contracted in #FNQ on the Burdekin River. One of the risks contracting in advance is that the quality is not assured - and we have to take them. So we then can end up with less than ideal sunflower quality. You may be seeing some Aussie Grey Stripes that are not perfect now? But .. if we don't take these contracts then we may not have Australian supply and would end up relying on imports. It's a tough one to manage but we'd prefer to tak...e these quality risks and try for Aussie seed over imports. Fortunately this crop is coming on well in sugar cane country where growers were looking for an alternative crop. This grower clearly has a sense of humour See more

17.01.2022 #Avigrain continues to drop birdseed prices. Some products are only down a dollar or two but #Australian Grey Stripe Sunflower and White French Millet have had big drops in price. Budgie Blue - 50% canaryseed is another big mover. Ask your local retailer to see what they can do for you.

14.01.2022 Chooks love yoghurt?! Who knew?

13.01.2022 Had a good question from a customer today. "What is the shelf life on the seed?" Good question. Answer - It depends how it is stored. Kept in a cool, dry place seed should last for a long time.... Moist and hot and it'll likely develop mould and/or weevils. Fact is grain is harvested once a year so it's not like it's "fresh" all the time. It simply needs to be treated properly at harvest - so harvested at the right moisture levels, stored in an aerated silo - which we do at Avigrain and/or our farmer suppliers manage. Then we process it - grade and mix the seed - which is a very small part of the time it's stored post harvest - often less than a week between intake to our silos and out the door. Then #Avigrain products are out of our control - off to the shops via transport companies - then into the consumers hands and we just hope they don't whack it in the laundry for months. We could treat it with a chemical like Reldan which has chlorpyrifos-methyl and that'll stop anything growing - but we don't like using hard chemicals on birdfood if we can help it - prefer the natural method of good storage practice. I hope that answers the question? And if you have any more - just ask!

11.01.2022 Weevil time again ! We've had our first complaint about weevils since last summer. Weevil eggs are often lying dormant in cereal grains and hatch when the atmosphere is warm and moist. So FNQ it's a real problem whereas Melbourne in winter - not so much. Coming in to warmer weather it's time to look at the weevil cycle. On #Avigrain bags is a warning that grain must be stored in a cool, dry place to avoid weevils - and fungal mould. ... When breeders get weevils they are quick to blame the seed and ask why we don't produce weevil free seed. The only way to guarantee no weevils in grain is to treat the seed with chemicals - like phostoxin - which costs time and money and much more importantly leaves a chemical residue that we reckon is no good for anyone - especially your birds. So coming into spring give your bins a wash out, keep the seed in a cool, dry spot and turn it over - empty the last lot out before putting more in. And if you have weevils in the seed when you open the bag - they should not be there - take it back to swap or refund. thx See more
