20.01.2022 Did you know that bees have personalities? Some are shy, and some bold and thrill seeking? They can recognize faces in the same way we do! Bees are usually hardwired to do certain jobs in the hive such as being the undertaker and removing dead bees from the hive. However if a bee needs to change jobs and do a job usually reserved for younger members ....they can. When this happens they actually change their brain chemistry and can become younger to perform more active jobs ! ...Amazing! Consider we have so much to learn from these amazing animals before you get a can of spray out! #naturelovers #animallovers #beelovers #beelovers #animalbehaviour #animalbehaviourist #animalbehaviouraustralia

20.01.2022 Did you know that that most animals experience some degree of Fear, Anxiety and Stress at the Veterinary Clinic? Often it goes without being noted by the owner or the veterinarian. At Avoca Drive Animal Hospital we make note of your animals every emotion during their visit, and give them a score on the Fear, Anxiety and Stress (FAS) Scale. This scale has 3 categories and 5 levels.

13.01.2022 Anaesthesia-free dentistry may sound good but BEWARE of anyone offering you this. It involves physically restraining your conscious animal, to remove calculus and tartar from the surface of their teeth and is generally performed by non-veterinarians who are not trained in dentistry. It may be offered as a cheaper or easier alternative to professional dentistry under anesthesia, but it does not prevent or treat dental diseases, and causes significant pain and distress your an...imal. There are a number of animal welfare issues associated with anaesthesia-free dentistry, including the following...which are highlighted on the RSPCA website.... It causes unnecessary extreme distress, anxiety, and pain to the animal, and it does not address gum or tooth disease and just makes the teeth look externally clean while potentially masking underlying disease which still requires a veterinarian and anesthesia anyway. Can you imagine the degree of distress it would cause you if some uninvited large people restrained you for a procedure you didn't want???!!! Talk to us about how to solve these issues in your pet the kind, gentle and considerate way. We can help you with positive training methods that will help keep your pet not only healthy in the mouth but relaxed and happy in the mind. #animal dentistry #positivedogtrainer #positivedogtrainers #positivedogtrainingtips #positivedogtraining #animalwelfare #animalwelfareassociation #animalwelfareleague #animalwelfareworldwide

12.01.2022 Questing! This is an adult female Paralysis Tick. Dr Nicki removed this from one of our patients on Monday. If you look closely you can see it questing. This is the way ticks come to be on our pets. They climb to the top of a grass blade or branch, hold on with their rear legs and quest for a host with their front legs. We have had two paralysis tick cases this week alone. Thankfully both patients are doing amazing. Remember to check your pets daily and keep an eye out for any change in behaviour.

11.01.2022 Luna was super brave when she came in to get some little lumps taken off. Here we believe no lumps are good lumps and they should all be checked by a vet!

10.01.2022 Frankie pictured here is my Frizzle Rooster. I was removing a paralysis tick from his 'Wattle' The dangly red bit below his lower beak. Yes backyard chooks can be affected by paralysis ticks and he couldn't remove this one himself!!!. Ticks that occur on the comb or wattle of birds should be removed if you can do so with minimal stress! If you're not sure how to do it, and use stress free methods of handling animals just give us a call. We're always happy to help!

10.01.2022 These gorgeous ducks have thoughtfully been provided with fresh water by locals, having decided to pad down together outside a busy shopping area in Kincumber! Did you know the biggest threat to these beautiful birds is contaminated water?. Stagnant or contaminated water often results in them being affected by 'botulism' a bacterial infection that poisons the nervous system. Thousands die each year from this condition. If you are aware of rubbish, sewerage or any poisonous su...bstances like paints being washed into the waterways or drains please take preventative action. You can save a life! #ducksofinstagram #wildlifelovers #environmentallyconscious protection #protectourwaterways #ducklings

09.01.2022 This is our beautiful Belinda. She's a true gem. Joining us with work placement for veterinary nursing cert 4 this year. She has bought us lots of love and happiness. She smashed out her fear free certification and a vet receptionist course on top of her cert 4 studies. Totally blowing us away. Massive congratulations and well done Belle.

09.01.2022 Did you know that the scientific name for the common goat is Aegagrus? Despite being selectively bred for meat and milk many people keep goats as pets because they can form strong bonds with their owners. Owning a goat means understanding their needs, especially their feet. Being cloven hooved animals ( their hoof is split in to two toes) often means they need regular nail trims. #goats #animals #animallovers ... #animalloves #animalbehaviourandwelfare #favouraiteanimal See more

09.01.2022 Do you love feeding native birds in your garden like me? There's actually a bit to know so that the birds we love are being looked after by us rather than harmed. One of the best resources is birdlife.org.au Remember one of the best ways is to plant native shrubs for them. Don't forget to clean your bird feeder between every meal. Just like us, they need a clean plate to eat from! We can help with advice and product for them.

08.01.2022 Poor Archer was unfortunately at the wrong end of a tick His dad rushed him straigh to us and we started treatment! Once he started to relax and we got the tick serum on board, he was stable enough to transfer to @animalreferralhospitalgosford for overnight care. Tick prevention is so important! Tick season is ALL YEAR ROUND !

05.01.2022 Cats and people are social creatures. Engaging in activities that are enjoyed together will enhance the relationship between you and your cat. Thought we could give you some tips on how to play with your little lion straight from the veterinary specialists mouth this morning! ..... You should initiate and end the game. Have special toys that are used for this game and keep them out of reach of the cat until play time. Give the verbal cue "Let’s play and present the wand toy.... Move the toy slightly back and forth along the ground to foster interest or chase. Hiding the teaser around a corner or piece of furniture and making it move slowly out of sight, can peak a cat’s interest in the item. Keep the toy at a level that does not require the cat to leap high in the air to try to get the toy. Let the cat catch the teaser. The chase is part of the fun, but make sure the cat is able to catch the toy. Once caught, engage her in a gentle game of tug. Verbally reward her interest in the toy. Purrrrfect! Have fun! #cats #catsofinstagram #catplay #kittens #kittenplay

05.01.2022 Did you know that a considerate approach, using gentle control and great care when touching your pet are the corner stones of the Fear Free Movement? Pets are often showing signs in their body language of fear that goes unnoticed by us humans. Take the time to consider your pets emotions. Especially with challenging situations for them, like at the veterinary hospital.

01.01.2022 Did you know that even when an area appears 'clean' to the eye there are odors and chemical messengers (pheromones) left behind by other pets that can have a negative impact on your pet at the vet hospital? Here at Avoca Drive Animal Hospital we clean surfaces and towels using an enzymatic cleaner that removes fear pheromones left by other pets that may affect your veterinary visit, making it more pleasant and enjoyable for you both. #animalbehavior #animalbehaviourist #an...imalbehaviourcentre #animalbehaviourstudent #animalbehaviourmatters #animalbehaviouraustralia #animalbehaviourandwelfare #cats #catsofinsta See more
