25.01.2022 It’s real. The third in Avondale Seminary’s read-your-Bible-better series examines the word for fight/struggle. It seems unavoidable (and exhausting). The good news? Jesus is a perfect Companion because He has already won.

24.01.2022 Did you ever ride to the married units to make soggy chips? Celia did! Read this short Q&A to see if you got up to half the things she did at Avondale. WERE YOU INVOLVED IN A CHAFF AT AVONDALE? One Saturday night we crept up the stairs of the chapel and yanked on the rope that rang the bell. We rang it loud and long. The boys’ dean and his helpers searched the chapel to no avail. Once they’d gone, we rang the bell again. I had a key to the little music room at the top of the... stairs where Mrs Durrant gave piano lessons. We were in there hiding behind the piano, our sides aching from stifled laughter. The boys ran up and down those stairs so many times that night. Look, one of them said, the rope is still swinging. They must be here somewhere. Eventually we decided to sneak back to our rooms. We made it halfway across the lawn when a spotlight caught us. WHAT WAS THE AVONDALE EXPERIENCE FOR YOU? Avondale was: jumping in Marmite creek (Dora Creek) on a boiling hot day; making sticky sweet popcorn in the Andre Hall kitchen; running through the rabbit warren corridors of Preston Hall to reach my friends in Andre; getting up at 4 am to write an essay with only a few hours to slam it together; gluten steaks in the caf; midnight birthday parties; beautiful music; inspiring worship services in the Audo; lay-ups and blisters on the basketball court; laughter and prayers with friends; worships in Ladies Chapel; transformational grammar with Mr Cooper and poetry with Dr Cox; Girls Walk after tea, and; bike rides to the outdoor married units to make soggy chips. WHO IMPACTED YOUR AVONDALE EXPERIENCE? Her name was Leonie and she was my friend. I miss her. We laughed together, went on early morning jogs up College Drive (now Central drive), attended classes together, and complained about the stodgy Sunday lunches. She was my personal banker who loaned me money when mine ran out. She inspired me to organise my wardrobe immaculately just as she did. Leonie died of a brain tumour last year. She battled bravely and serenely with her full trust in her heavenly Father.

23.01.2022 Thanks, Barry Oliver. The alumnus and former lecturer and council chair has ensured articles written by Avondale University College academics for the new Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists will count towards the institution’s research profile. That's a win for everyone.

09.01.2022 Alumnus Peter Stojanovic’s family hatched a daring plan to escape religious persecution in the former Yugoslavia. After arriving in Australia, Peter soon found a job with the rest of his family in the meat works. But meeting his future wife changed his life and Peter (BA Theology 1979) became a Seventh-day Adventist pastor who now ministers to perpetrators of domestic violence. This is the story of a journey: from refuge seeker to refuge maker.

06.01.2022 When she was little, Tarnya Garner wanted to be a cowboy and then a policeman. Now she is the Women's Ministries Director for the Seventh-day Adventist in Victoria and pastoral intern at Nunawading church. Graduating this year, Tarnya will also be one of a few female pastors to graduate from a Bachelor of Ministry and Theology after studying completely by distance. She says the "caring lecturers at Avondale (with a big high five to Dr Lyell Heise)" were key in helping her in her journey. We're proud of you, Tarnya!

05.01.2022 From its inception, Avondale has committed to the spiritual care of students and staff. In fact an annual Week of Prayer was initiated at Avondale back in 1898*. Annual weeks of spiritual enrichment and emphasis have continued ever since. Even during the 2020 COVID-19 related restrictions, Avondale continued this tradition with the spiritual week, now called Festival of Faith (FOF), online. Returning and new students are set to enjoy FOF next week with alumna Pr Moe Stiles as the guest speaker. Thinking back to your time at Avondale, who was the speaker during spiritual weeks that you attended? *Avondale: Experiment on the Dora, by Milton Hook, p59
