17.01.2022 Avondale Garden Autumn Update While visiting on Anzac Day it was evident that Autumn is in no hurry to settle in at Avondale Garden this year. The warmer weather is keeping the summer foliage intact on many of the trees while for some, the dry conditions have resulted in a quick transition from green to yellow to leaf drop. The Linden tree, beloved of a generation of kids for its low spreading and sweeping branches, has put on its usual display of delicate golden leaves. Floa...ting down in a shower with each breeze, they form a striking carpet and are a gift for the groups of choughs to dig and scratch in with an admirable single mindedness. Bower birds are here too, concentrating on the buds of the variegated holly and ever vigilant for the unattended picnic hamper or pieces of fruit. The liquidambar is still gloriously green with just a tinge of red in the uppermost leaves. Gang gang cockatoos are making sure the small branchlets and seed pods have been properly dealt with before flying away to the creek for a drink and a resting place for the night. Lightly golden, the weeping birch still has all its leaves intact for a short while yet, and the rowan tree behind it displays its berries as smudges of red and pink in the late afternoon sun. The silver birches are clinging to their summer finery for a little longer and underneath them the plentiful drifts of red and white spotted amanita muscaria are tiny splashes of colour in the deep shade. While the beauty and tranquillity of Avondale garden is evident in all seasons, Autumn is a special time to enjoy its many changes. The colours, both muted and vibrant, clearly reflect the summer gone and the autumn now here and passing. If you haven’t had your Autumn visit to the garden yet, there will be an opportunity on May 11th to come along and see the changing of the seasons and walk through with DELWP to find out which trees are being removed and pruned in this year’s works program. Let us know you’re coming so we can make sure there’s a cup of tea for you Anyone who would like to receive the regular Avondale Update by email or post please send your address to [email protected] or call 0260727502. Or you can view it on Upper Murray Landcare Facebook page.

13.01.2022 Dear a friends of Avondale, You may recall being invited by DELWP to participate in a Management Planning process for Avondale Reserve in June 2018. The consultation was run by Redgum Consulting and was open for a month, closing at the end of June. Although the Plan hasn’t yet been completed yet DELWP would like to advise that there are works which are to be this done this year. These include removal of several dead trees within the garden (affected by elm leaf beetle) an...d removal and pruning of trees for the new camping area in a site external to the Garden. In addition to the new camping area there will be a dedicated day visitor area with 2 picnic tables and bbq, an double sided interpretive Board highlighting the agricultural history of Avondale run and the establishment of the garden. There will also be a relocation of the toilet block. All those who made submissions can see by the attached map that many of the ideas for onground works have been accepted and will be implemented with the stage one funding this year. Although the Plan has not yet been released yet, other issues raised eg managing deer damage to existing plants, are being considered prior to the finalisation of the Plan. Any comments or input into the proposed works are sought and are welcome. Please email [email protected], call 0260727502 or 0427437439.

11.01.2022 Some of the new improvements to the Gardens.

10.01.2022 Planned tree works for Avondale Gardens 2019 The works can be seen on the plan attached. A meeting was held on Monday 3rd of December 2018 with DELWP to discuss the proposed woks. There will be limited tree work inside Avondale Gardens as shown in the map, but there are 2 dead Blackwoods near the old tennis court and elm leaf beetle has attacked the elms near the current camping area which will need some tree work. Most of the hazardous tree work will be where the new overni...ght camping area is to be constructed outside the gardens. Works are expected to be completed by the end of the financial year.

01.01.2022 This day has been CANCELLED....... AVONDALE IN SPRING. Avondale Garden is welcoming Spring with carpets of bluebells and forget me nots, rhododendrons, camellia, Star magnolia, and Japonica all in flower. Swathes of blue and white... are complemented by pinks and reds and vibrant greens as new leaves appear on the elms, maples, liquidambar and linden. The dark green of the row of Lawson Cypress is a foil for the silvery blue of the spruce which brightens the wintery dark browns of bark and drifts of Autumn leaves still lingering. It’s a perfect time to visit and enjoy the beauty of the established plantings which provide a tranquil setting for a peaceful contemplation of nature or reflection on the foresight and determination of the creators of the garden, Peg and Derek Bird. The harsh climate and isolation of Avondale Run in the 1940s were not conducive to the easy establishment of an English style garden inspired by the designs of Edna Walling. It took years of hard work to build the homestead and make the garden around it. Windbreaks were established to mitigate the prevailing winds and provide shade and protection for the house. A variety of deciduous trees, shrubs and bulbs were planted and rock walls and garden edging built using local stone. The garden grew, the owners moved on and although times and circumstances changed, the garden kept growing. It is ageing now and there are different challenges which couldn’t be imagined seventy years ago. Horticulturalist John Hawker, Heritage Garden Specialist formerly of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, will visit Avondale on Sunday November 3rd to share his knowledge of trees and gardens. John will walk through the garden with those attending and speak about the trees, the way they are integral to the stability of the garden, the best way to support the health and longevity of existing plantings and how to plan and plant for the future. Understanding how the elements of the garden design can be replaced and maintained will ensure good decisions are made about its future. Avondale Garden is managed by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and community volunteers and is open to day visitors and campers. ‘ Avondale in Spring’ is sponsored by the Friends of Avondale and will be held on Sunday 3rd November. 1 -4 pm. Afternoon tea is available for $5 per person with proceeds to maintenance of the garden. Please register for catering by calling 02 60727502 or email: [email protected]. Avondale is approximately 12 kms south of Shelley. Turn off the Murray Valley at Avondale Road (look for the green and yellow Landcare sign) and follow the signs.
