25.01.2022 Is your teen or pre-teen tired, worn out from a full schedule or just worn out from the hormone monster? Are they up and down emotionally, needing space and time in nature? Maybe they are in need of some time to do a little self inquiry, disguised as something fun, adventurous, creative and relaxing. I may have what they need!... I combine my skill as a Holistic Health Coach, Yoga teacher and High School Art teacher to facilitate this amazing teens retreat day. I know as well as you do, they NEED it! Ive created this event because I genuinely feel that teens need to be guided and supported through this transition. 24.01.2022 BE A BOUNCE BACK QUEEN I see you trying friend. This is just a friendly reminder to keep going. Even when you dont want to anymore, when you want to hide or when you want to say fuck and fuck all yall. Have a break and then get back into it How often do you try something and it doesnt work or you just dont stick to it!? Most things rarely take the first time, especially if you are trying to create new habits. And just because it may not have taken the first time, do...esnt mean it wont the next time or the times after that. My health and wellness adventure has all been about being a bounce back queen! Ive been investing time, energy and money in this for 10 years. And its all been worth it. It is always worth it. Always connect back to your WHY? You need to give things time and a whole lot of self-compassion along the way. Be ok with stuffing up, getting things wrong, but always bouncing back. This is resilience and grit. 24.01.2022 | SELF CARE | Yep that buzz word! It can invoke images & feelings of soaking in an Epson salt & essential oil bath. Or you might be flipping me the bird saying what the F is self-care! Either way, lets chat about it. There are a few ways to view this aspect of health and wellbeing. You can see it as time to show yourself love, to rejuvenate & restore. To fill your cup up so you can then serve others from a full heart. You can call it me time if that floats your boat.... Or you as my friend @thenatural_home_ recently put it, you can view it as wellbeing time. From this perspective, self-care is an act of wellbeing. Rathan than seeing it as something you add on to your day, build it into your lifestyle, make it a habit. Make it a choice rather than a chore. In any case, whatever you want to call it, Im not here to tell you what your self-care should look like, thats not my place. At the end of the day, like anything, self-care needs to be sustainable. So how do you do that? Theres a range of dimensions to self-care. Choose the bits that resonate with you most. The dimensions of self-care Ive come across are: physical, emotional, personal, social, spiritual, intellectual, environment, professional & financial. When we view self-care through this lens of multiple dimensions, it becomes a way of informing the way you want to live your life. Take time to think about where & what can you curate these into life (or where they already exist). What daily actions can you turn into acts of self-care, self-respect, self-love & or wellbeing? Where can you get 2 for 1 value even? Can you make food choices that are more supportive & an act of self-care. Can you give yourself a little extra time in the morning to have a slow tea or coffee? Can you move your body with gratitude rather than punishment? Can you sit still & take in 10 long, slow deep breaths, this perhaps is the most loving of all things you could do. 24.01.2022 | TURN YOUR VALUES INTO TIME | But what does it mean Basil!? All too often We say something like health/ is a value of ours, but how often do you actually make time for health? Where in your week do you have conscious space for health or community or friendship or family or fill in the gap... Turning your values into time, looks like taking the action to put them on your calendar, to schedule things in and make the happen.... But before you do this, have a good think about what your top CORE values really are? The list is endless but its individual to you! Think about the movie Inside Out, and how Rileys core values were islands that connected her to her vibrance and vitality. When they werent active or stimulated the islands no longer functioned, and she became a shadow of herself. What is so important to you that you must make it a priority in your life! 24.01.2022 LOWEST HANGING FRUIT When you want to make a change of any kind its best to start with the lowest hanging fruit. Only you know what your lowest hanging fruit is. But, in general the vast majority of people are tired, dehydrated and stressed out. So, the lowest hanging fruit I would suggest is sleep, hydration, and time for relaxation.... Simple! Maybe but maybe not? The problem is that we tend to take on too much too soon, making things more complicated than we need to. So, when it feels too hard we give up! We need to make choices and habits sustainable for us to stick with them long term. Take just 10 minutes to reflect on your current habits and things you want to change. Then consider the lowest hanging fruit to work on first. What are the most simple habits you can master first? If you need to drink more water, can you pack your drink bottle the night before or have a glass of water on the bench ready for you in the morning? Master the small things first. These usually have a bigger impact than you think. This is why Ive created my Wellness Blueprint. Im not suggest that theres anything wrong with being comfortable or safe. But, if you have specific dreams or desires for your life and you currently feel stuck, that friend is a good indication that you need to get out of your comfort zone, a little or a lot!... Dont wait until you feel 100% ready, get in the game! Its more fun trying and failing, than not trying at all. Heres a few tips: 1. Get clear on your favourite excuses. 2. 22.01.2022 LET GO This last week and a bit has been a bit full! Ive had extra yoga classes, a change in work schedule, health coaching calls, eventful moon time shenanigans and life in general. This is not a compliant, because, well...first world problems. But, it is a reminder that its ok to let some things side or let go of them completely. For me its been letting go of social media stuff and feeling that I NEED to post everyday. Its helped to create space for myself to lean... into the new things and other priorities. An old default from my teaching days was to push and do all the things all the time. And always at the detriment to my physical and mental health and especially my relationships. I basically ignored my connection to all of it. If things are creating overwhelm, where possible allow yourself to let go of them, to create more space. 22.01.2022 INNER FOCUS, OUTER AWARENESS It was the last week of the little kids yoga for the term, so I set then a little fun challenge. Yoga is more than making shapes with the body. They had to focus, balance and be aware of everything around them. Today the kids all had different answers when I asked what they liked the most about yoga. One said this challenge, another said the stretching and the other just liked being here with is ... My kids classes are fun, stimulating and a good challenge for the mini-mes body and mind. Ive have 2 kids yoga workshops this holidays, 1st & 7th of October 9am-12pm. 19.01.2022 | RITUALS | You know those weird & strange things people do! Which are not weird at all, just misunderstood. The kind of rituals Im referring to are not specific to any religion or culture (but they can be). In the broad sense, Im referring to the things that help you to connect with your mind, body and spirit. Things that help you to feel more energised, centred, aligned and ready to take on your day or helps you to be more open and available to the people in your life.... Some rituals have become essential for me. They are the way that I maintain connection to myself and bring more ease to the way I want to move through my days. Rituals can be daily, weekly, monthly, etc. My morning rituals are the main ones I have in place. On waking, my morning generally consists of washing my face with cold water & then dehydrating it, I scrap my tongue to get rid of the bacteria build up overnight, this is an Ayurvedic practice. I open the blinds to check out the sunrise then turn on the oil diffuser. I drink almost half a litre of a warm lemon water concoction. I then listen to a guided visualisation meditation. Followed by 10 minutes of mobility to iron out the kinks and finally take my fur baby for a walk. When I start my day with time for the things that make me feel well, I can take on the day in a better state of mind. Ive primed myself for my day. A weekly ritual I love is a long bath with a book (more of a winter thing). But you guys already know how much I love bath time. Some people work better with a specific schedule, others prefer freedom and tune in to what they need. I fall somewhere in the middle. I give myself flexibility but generally some structure does help me. Experiment and find what works for you. 19.01.2022 CRAVE I actually gave myself permission to do nothing today. What I've really been craving, was a day to do nothing at all. My moon time came in during the Bliss Night last night, which was followed by intense period pain from 3:30am to 4am.... I'm not going to lie, I had to coach myself through it. The urge to do business things was strong in the beginning. It's a habit from teaching days when every day is a day to do something on your list. I love having my own business and working for myself but I can easily so thing s for it EVERY day. I slept in, it was necessary! Other than a general house tidy, I listened to a long podcast, walked j.d, I did some drawing for my next tattoo, ate nourishing food and that's about it. I feel chilled, calm and recharged. Learning to take time for yourself and to actually listen to what you need takes time. I think it goes beyond self care, I believe it's a necessary life skill for your health and wellbeing to do this. What do you most crave time to do just for you? 19.01.2022 | KINDNESS | Reseach is confirming that Is incredibly beneficial to our health and wellbeing. Kindness can reduce pain, anxiety and depression. It can also give you more energy, make you more resilient to stress, make you happier and extend your life! Often being kind cost nothing, just by being a kind heart centered person with everyone you come across (even the people who arent so kind to you!).... Or perhaps its checking in with friends and family, making a meal for someone, giving someone an unexpected surprise of your time and energy, presents or presence. The real gift of being kind is in the giving not the expectation of something in return. 18.01.2022 | R U OK | Its ok not to be ok! Thats all we really need to know. Because things pass, we mend and heal when we give ourselves the space to do so. But, do we ask people this question enough? Are you really ok? I suspect not. Im guilty of not checking in with people as often as I would like to #humanaf I think about people a lot but I dont always take the next step.... But what if we ask ourselves these question every day!? Its an essential question to ask yourself as often as possible. This is self-enquiry and self-study. Imagine if you asked yourself this question and really connected to your feelings and emotions on a deep and honest level. That acknowledgement then allows you to begin the process of allowing this to pass through you rather than remain stuck within you and build up. I think what this initiative is amazing for highlighting that its ok to be vulnerable. To be the person asking the question, being vulnerable with showing compassion and putting yourself out there. And being vulnerable with being totally honest about exactly how you are going. This is the magic sauce in being human. Vulnerability with your select, specific and special people, that are lucky enough to have the honour of your vulnerability, is connection!
17.01.2022 BALLS, YES PLEASE! Cookie dough ball recipe. Ive been making these little nuggets of ball awesomeness for my yogis. They have fast become a favourite after yoga treat! Its super easy, minimal fuss and effort, but so not wish. Win win!... As usually I just guesstimate these treats. To make: Chop about 2 squares of dark chocolate (I use 90-95% lindt) Then, MIX 5 generous tbs of almond meal 2 generous tbs of almond butter 2 tbs of brown rice syrup Add the chopped chocolate (optional) Add a dash of soft coconut oil. Once mixed, then; roll them into balls! 17.01.2022 . Boys stay tuned, dont shy away from this! I had a whole other period post written to share an then I accidentally deleted it! But in that 2 hr space of time, my period pain steam rolled me just 15 minutes before my yoga class was to start. I was running off to the toilet every few minutes.... I told my yogis I was wasnt doing so well and what it was. I hoped it would pass but it just got worse and more crippling until I had to call the class quits 20 minutes in. My yogis are legends, they were so graceful with me cancelling and allowing me to be raw and real with them. I seriously love my yoga community Thanks goodness I did because I threw up, twice. I havent had this period epic experience in years (It often happens at school! Not fun!) Yep a lot of us get the period s but the vomiting, not for ages. Periods can suck! We need to talk about them openly and say it how it is. Sometime they can be easy, and stress free, other time, like I mentioned above. Either was, menstruation is an important part of our health and wellbeing that needs more attention. Way back in out pre-agricultural days, we used to have a thing called the red tent. A place for women on their period to go to and rest while they were bleeding. They would tell stories and take it easy, while everyone else outside the ten kept everything flowing. This sounds so heavenly supportive. Weve lost this Ladies where can you take it easy? Where can you ask for help? Your period is your winter, its time to rest.(where you can). Significant others, where can you give your wombed love support and take some of the load off so she can rest? Ladies, even if you feel fine, can you tune into the subtleties of you inner seasons. Notice the quality of your energy. Ladies get to know your cycle. 17.01.2022 | NOTE TO SELF |... You are enough! This is all you ever need to know. A lot of people do the things they do to find this sense of feeling enough. I know I did in my teaching career. ... Who even knows what that really means anyways, its subjective AF! But since you are here, in my subjective opinion it means being loved, respected, valued, and supported just because I exist, full stop. But where does your not enoughness come from? Connect to that inner child. Their experiences, thoughts and belifes. How have they moulded the things you do to feel enough. This is a lesson that Ill always come back to, because sometimes I forget that I am enough just because I am. Everytime without fail, when I realise this, inner peace fills me up from the inside out. Sadly insty only let's me post 60 seonds of the last circuit of the Australian 12 days of Christmas... so you get the awful but expressive singing It's been a big year for these teens. Their first year of high school, hormones fluctuations, their brains are changing, covid shenanigans and the rest of life. This is where their pathways and choices start to broaden and multiply. It's a crucial point for them, but ...an even better opportunity for us to support and help them develop their awareness muscle. It's crazy how fast it has flown by and how much has happened in that time. Its something that we wear as a badge of honour, but should we? Its time to check in with how you use this word and identify with it. Do you use this word as a way to describe yourself? Has it become part of your identity? How does it determine what you do and how you live your life? During my teaching career, it became a huge problem for my health ...and wellbeing. I was constantly trying to prove my worth through my work and worth ethic (It was also an expectation set by the leadership at the school). But, all it did was infect my personal life, make me sick and burn out. I was trying to perfect my perception of my imperfect self. Havent we all done that at some point! I realise now that I wasted so much time and energy trying to prove my value and existence. What I know now, is that I NEVER needed to prove anything to anyone. Doing things well and striving for perfection are two different energies. Perfectionism places importance on the outcome. However, more importance and awareness needs to be placed on the process, the learning and growth instead. Letting go of perfectionism creates so much more space fore intentional living and connection to life. 12.01.2022 PERMISSION My yogis are the best. I had a migraine last night so I cancelled my adults class. It's taken me some time to give myself permission to take what I need, when I need it. In my old job and in society in general, there's a culture of pushing through pain and being unwell, because you have a job or commitments. ... I rarely used to take days off when I was sick because it felt easier to push through it than to take time to rest. My 'to do' list would just continue to grow and I'd still have to do the work for the casual teacher anyways... I can see now that I was being a martyr and trying to control everything. It's taken some practice to break this old habit of pushing through. But now when I need to cancel something I honour my choice and give myself permission and the time I need to heal properly. When I do, I recover much faster than I would have if I pushed through. 11.01.2022 | DISCOMFORT IS OK | This something that yoga has taught me. Not to push through pain, but to sit with emotional and mental unease as a way of allowing it to move through you and not become a stuck energy or a negative belief/Sorry. It may not feel nice to be in the pits, but it can be good practice to sit with your discomfort. Discomfort makes us more resilient and better able to manage larger crisis in our lives. ... As a High School teacher I see kids not knowing what to do when they feel emotional or mental discomfort, how to handle it. Often, they act out because of it. Us adults do this too (Im a guilty participant, human AF). All we have to do is acknowledge the discomfort, the shit, the issue, the trauma, the conflict and sit with it. Yes, this feels heavy and awkward. But the learning is in investigating the discomfort, you just have to be brave and sit with it for long enough. This is where our thoughts, programming and unconscious beliefs come to the surface and you can decide how you want to proceed. Get curious, ask yourself; What story am I playing in my mind? What part of me was triggered by...? How do I want to handle this? What kind of person do I want to be? How do I want to show up for myself, for other or in the world? This is connection. And this can start the month of CONNECTION. This is my 3rd pillar, completing my health & wellness trifecta. There are layers of complexity and simplicity to it. Connection is about the relationship that you have to yourself, others & the world that you perceive. You might be wondering who is this person youve decided to allow... into your virtual world? And into your heart lol I live in this meat suit called Ashlynn Renee Abrahams. Im a 34yr old, life loving Holistic Health Coach and Yoga Teacher to adults and mini humans My initials spell A.R.T and I was a high school Art teacher! (maiden name was Tolhurst) I can draw, paint & make things from clay. I majored in Ceramics at Uni. I do love to get dirty. I misspell, misread & mispronounce things all the time, mild undiagnosed dyslexia flew under the radar. Human AF. Im a recovering perfectionist. I love food, like really fucking love it. Avocados, peanut butter, coriander, corn chips & good quality chocolate are a few of my favourite things. I have sad days like everyone. Human AF. My dog is my child #j.dspam Most people would label me a vego. Im mostly plant based but I dont like to label myself. I eat intuitively. 06.01.2022 | HIT THE SACK | Hit the hay, shut-eye, catch some zs, crash, turn in Yep I shared a post about the importance of sleep in my mind month of posting. BUT, it must be included here as well. Sleep makes or breaks a healthy lifestyle and body! There is no illness or disease that does not benefit from sleep!... Try to make your sleep pattern consistent, even on the weekend. I know, party pooper! But, many people give themselves social jet lag by staying up extra late on the weekend. When Monday comes around, its like youve come back into a different time zone Sleep is when our body repairs itself from the day, so that you can then take on a new day tomorrow When you neglect your sleep, you are neglecting yourself and potentially being a grumpy arse towards all the people around you Heres a few extra sleep tips: (check out the last post on sleep for the other tips) Exercising during the day can help you sleep better. Try to not to eat any closer than 2-3 hrs before bed. Avoid alcohol before bed. Even if it helps you to nod off initially it causes disturbances during the night. I would try not to drink anything at least an hour before bed. That way you have more chance of sleeping through the night and not needing a mid-sleep wee! Keep the bedroom as dark as you can. And on the cooler side. 19 degrees C is the optimal temperature for sleep. Write down any worries or your mental to-do list before you turn the lights out. I find it easier to sleep when Im in a state of gratitude. Ill often say out loud, how lucky are we to have a warm bed! Take 5 10 long slow deep breaths when you get into bed. These small tweaks will make a huge difference helping you to prime yourself for better sleep. 03.01.2022 CELEBRATE OTHERS Lets face it, we live in a global society that encourages us to pit ourselves against our brothers and sisters (we are all brother and sisterhad to get my hippy thing in here!) Lets all be radically honest and acknowledge that weve all had moments of jealousy and envy. I have, Im human AF. But what if we celebrate others and use that energy to lift ourselves, rather than compare ourselves.... Lets move away from comparison and into connection...and celebration. If a little ping of jealousy does pop up (because it will, youre human), see it as an opportunity to investigate. Where has this come from, what story surrounds it and how can I flip it? thats what I do. We need to be on each others team now more than ever; team humanity, team earthling, team earth! Cheering each other on rather than tearing them apart and allowing that toxic energy of jealousy to hide unchecked in your body.
