25.01.2022 According to the dietary guidlelines, adults should eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit each day, with one serve being approximately 1/2 cup. A 2018 health study found that almost 96% of Australian adults aren't meeting these requirements, which is scary. While 5 servings is a great start, 9-10 will have you thriving What could this look like? ... Sauteed greens, sweet potato, leek and zucchini with eggs, or a green smoothie for breakfast. 24.01.2022 As you can imagine, one of our jobs as clinicians is to stay abreast of new and emerging research. Despite previous research and recommendations advocating for up to 200mg of caffeine daily throughout pregnancy, controversially conflicting data has just been published suggesting this needs to be revised and there is no safe level of caffeine consumption for women trying to conceive or during pregnancy. Given this is so fresh, I am yet to form a view on how this will impact m...y clinical practice moving forward. Stay tuned. Colleagues, how do you feel about this?

17.01.2022 As a community, we are facing an unprecedented challenge with the spread of COVID-19, also known as novel coronavirus. I have been keeping abreast of the data and advice that is changing frequently. At this stage, both online consultations and face-to-face consultations in Woollahra are still operational. If you are working from home and do not want to venture out, please call or SMS us on 0434 479 377 to request that your scheduled consultation be changed to a phone/ Zoom/ o...r Skype consultation instead. Yesterday we emailed an update on the precautions we are taking to maintain a healthy and safe environment: We have heightened our hygiene procedures and are sanitising our hands before and after meeting with each client. We have hand sanitiser available in the consulting room, waiting area and in the bathroom for everyone to use. We are cleaning the desk, chairs and door handle with disinfectant prior to and after each client has attended. We advise that any clients who have symptoms such as fever, cold, cough, sore throat to call for a phone consultation rather than come into the clinic. We have signs up reminding everyone to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue if you sneeze, and to throw that tissue away immediately (bin in the bathroom) We support the Australian Government Guidelines to minimise social contact and to self-quarantine for 14 days if you have travelled overseas. We encourage anyone who is unsure to call the clinic to request a phone/video consultation, and we can arrange postage of repeat supplements/ herbal medicine to support you with your recovery. We encourage you to get plenty of rest, eat nourishing whole-foods, stay hydrated, and stress less to maintain robust immune defences. The safety and health of our community is of the utmost importance to us. Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate these uncertain times together. Please contact us if you have any questions. Stay safe & well, Tabitha x

16.01.2022 As most of you know I am dedicated to healthy soils, plants, animals, farms, people and planet. For those of you that share the same interests, there is a wonderful seminar/fundraiser coming up on Wednesday 4 Sept being hosted by a not-for-profit organisation Nourishing Australia. One of the event speakers, Dr Ron Ehrlich, has shared with me a 25% discount code NA2019 for you to use when registering on Eventbrite. The event organisers are hoping to raise funds for Hope For... I'm looking forward to attending to show my support for this important work.

15.01.2022 Ladies, if you are struggling to make, or stick to a new years resolution, I'd like to offer you one that is worthwhile and relatively easy. Make 2019 the year that you switch to organic pads and tampons. Our reproductive organs are some of our most sensitive, and yet we are dumping them with chemicals and nasties everytime we use pads or tampons that aren't organic. And we do this every single month for a huge portion of our lives. Switching to organic pads and tampons is on...e simple way that you can alleviate your body from toxicity and start to be kinder to yourself during your menstrual cycle. There are many good brands out there in supermarkets now, just look for the certified organic symbol to ensure the integrity of the product. Ideally, you want products that are 100% certified organic cotton, with no pesticides or chemicals. If you make this one change in 2019, it will be a huge step in the direction of better health and a cleaner body. 15.01.2022 If packing greens into your diet is a struggle, here is a simple tip to increase them. Focus on just one meal a day. Instead of being overwhelmed by needing to have the green smoothie, and the salad for lunch and the veggies for dinner; concentrate on just one meal. Making a huge change all at once can sometimes cause us to give up because it's too much too soon, so why not just focus on dinner? Each night for the next week, choose a few vegetables that you like and make a si...mple side dish to add to some good quality protein (if you eat meat.) The side dish might just be some broccoli and zucchini. You can chop these up and put it in the oven at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes. You can drizzle some olive oil, salt pepper and if you're feeling adventurous, a spice like cumin. Once it's done, you can add some lemon juice or fresh herbs. And there you have a beautiful side dish. Swap out other vegetables and spices or herbs to create equally beautiful veggie combinations. It's all about experimenting with just a few things. Eating well really is very simple. (Image @bondiguru) . . . . . #awakenyourhealth #organic #naturopath #nourishment #newyearsresolutions #changinghabits #justeatrealfood

15.01.2022 Studies show we think we spend 66% of our time indoors, however, according to the World Health Organisation, it's closer to 90%. This is a combination of sleeping, spending time at home, commuting to and from daycare, the workplace, plus time spent at indoor communal places. To put things in perspective, the air inside our homes is several times more polluted than outside! I'm not sharing this to scare you, I am sharing this to empower you to flip the statistics in your life.... Get outdoors, spend time in nature, enjoy some fresh air. How often do you spend outdoors? 14.01.2022 Morning Sickness Remedy Juice Why is this juice good for morning sickness? Morning sickness and nausea in pregnancy are common complaints during the first trimester and, for some... women, continue throughout their entire pregnancy. Ginger has a long history of use for nausea and clinical trials have shown that it significantly improved the symptoms of nausea, but not vomiting, in pregnancy. Ginger also has a great safety profile, making in a relevant choice. Nausea can be exacerbated by skipping meals or poor blood sugar management, so including a tummy-settling juice alongside a handful of nuts can help. Hydration is particularly important during pregnancy and can be compromised by morning sickness. This juice is a great way to hydrate yourself alongside ginger teas and plenty of filtered water. Even if you are not feeling nauseated, staying hydrated is especially important during pregnancy as your fluid requirements increase to account for the growth of amniotic fluid, significantly increase in maternal blood volume and to support foetal circulation. I've also included parsley in this juice, which is a good source of both iron and calcium, making it an excellent addition to smoothies or juices, particularly if you are experiencing some food aversion during your pregnancy. This is just a little taste from the meal plan included in Your Empowered Pregnancy eBook. There are many delicious, nutrient-dense and filling meals included in the meal plan, with recipes including Japanese rainbow tacos, almond meal banana bread, gluten-free tabouli, buckwheat pancakes with spiced pears and more! https://www.awakenyourhealth.com.au//your-empowered-pregna

14.01.2022 So what’s the deal with this global celery juice movement? Is drinking a glass of apiens graveolum (celery) juice actually therapeutic? Advocates such as the @medicalmedium are touting it for lowering blood pressure, preventing and soothing reflux, preventing gout, and protecting the liver. ... There is no doubt that celery is a clever vegetable, containing an alkalising and soothing combination of trace minerals in addition to an array of plant-based compounds and flavonoids such as caffeic acid, ferulic acid, apigenin, luteolin, limonene, coumarin, and kaempferol which all work together to provide powerful antioxidant characteristics, protecting our cells from harm. If you are an advocate, do be sure to wash your celery well, as it’s reported year-in and year-out as a #dirtydozen from @environmentalworkinggroup #foodnews Also be sure to include the leaves of the celery, as these contain some of the beneficial compounds described above. I personally am always a tad cautious with new trends, after having seen so many trends phase in and out over the past 15 years and we all know what they say about too much of a good thing! It is clear however that celery juice is a cost-effective practice, and could hardly be harmful at a glass a day. Plus celery juice is about 60% water, so it’s a great way to hydrate yourself if you enjoy it, regardless! So as it turns out, it’s your time to shine, the humble celery! If you are on board with this movement, please share with me your experience in the comments below x (Image @thestaplestore) . . . . #celeryjuice #foodismedicine #awakenyourhealth #auditandedityourhabits #onebiteatatime #beyourownsolution #naturopath #eattherainbow #justeatrealfood #instafood #nutrition #whatsinseason #australiansummer

13.01.2022 Chia seeds are an incredibly rich plant-source of omega 3, dietary fibre, and pack some great protein. Adding just a few tablespoons to your daily diet offers benefits to your hair, nails and skin, can help to keep your bowels regular, may assists weight management (as they keep us full!) and provides a sustained release of energy. Whats not to love?! This recipe for Chia Pudding makes 2 serves:... Chia Pudding 1 cup nut milk - we use calcium-fortified almond milk (eg, Almo) or organic coconut milk (I like Honest To Goodness brand) 1/4 cup chia seeds (black or white) 2 tbsp maple syrup or rice malt syrup 1 tsp natural vanilla extract or natural vanilla powder Combine ingredients in a bowl or jar, whisk well. Let sit for 15-20 minutes in the fridge, stirring once or twice to ensure no clumping. Enjoy topped with fresh, seasonal fruit.

12.01.2022 Adequate zinc levels are vital for immune function, hormonal production, for mental health, as an antioxidant, and for the integrity of the structures of the body such as skin, hair and nails. Zinc supports growth and development, so it is particularly important during pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and adolescence. Zinc's role in sex hormone production, fertility and sperm, and also in the production of prostatic fluids, means that men have a higher ...daily requirement for zinc than women. The requirement for dietary zinc is also greater for those who eat a plant-based diet (vegetarian or vegan), as a result of the high levels of phytates in vegetarian foods such as wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Phytates bind to dietary zinc and reduce its absorption. As high doses or long term use of iron or calcium can compromise zinc absorption, don't forget to seek professional personalised advice about your supplemental plan. For those that are partial to oysters, they are a great source of zinc - containing more zinc per serving than any other food. See more

10.01.2022 We all love a sweet treat. In our society, sweets are linked with comfort, celebration and a little bit of joy! We use sweets to recognise birthdays, to console loved ones when they're going through a hard time, to unwind after dinner and probably, around 3 pm for a little pick me up. Often though, we aren't really tasting the treats we eat. Instead, we are just mindlessly chowing them down, almost out of habit. How many times have you sat in front of the tv or computer scree...n with some of your favourite chocolate, only to look down and realised you've eaten more than you thought? This is mindless eating. Sweets are a beautiful treat, and we should enjoy them that way. Here are a few tips to enjoy your treats, mindfully. Next time you reach for something sweet, firstly ask yourself if you really feel like it, or if you're simply acting out of a habit. You might find you don't actually need it. What you might need instead, is some fresh air or some soothing tea. If you decide to have a treat, then take a breath, sit somewhere and enjoy it, one bite at a time. Drop the guilt and embrace the pleasure of it. Another good thing to become aware of, its the quality of the treats you eat. Is it bought from a big chain brand? Or, has it been made by a company that really cares about quality ingredients? Wherever possible, buy sweet treats, like chocolate, from brands that use minimal ingredients that are of high quality. Better yet, why not get in the kitchen this weekend and make some of your own from scratch? High-quality ingredients such as raw cacao, maple syrup, nuts, seeds and dried fruits can all be used to make some delicious (and simple) treats. 03.01.2022 This is the time of year when New Years' resolutions are set, quite often around health. When embarking on a new health journey we can often develop the mentality that we have to do it ‘perfectly’ or else we fail. Of course, the better choices we make, the better the outcomes. However, in today’s world of socialising, events & busy lifestyles, it is unrealistic to expect that you will change old habits overnight or follow your food goals 100% of the time without having slip...-ups. Consistency is key not perfection! Living a healthy & balanced lifestyle should bring a sense of joy, investment and self-love. Eating is one of life’s pleasurable activities and we are lucky enough to live in a country abundant in delicious, fresh produce. But when we do slip up, or go to our old habits, guilt can very quickly set in. How can you move past guilt & perfectionism? If you do happen to fall off track, please don’t beat yourself up or feel guilty. Guilt does not serve you or your goals. Learn from it, look at your triggers and become aware of how things make your body feel. Direct your thoughts away from the guilty mental chatter and become aware of your body, this can help reduce any chance of binge eating. Do you feel lethargic, glum, uncomfortable, anxious, pain? Really become in tune with your body and make a choice to be friends with your body. A slip-up certainly does not mean you have ruined your intention of becoming healthy. The best thing to do is to forgive yourself and recommit to eating well for the rest of the week. And don't forget to have joy in your life. Allow yourself to have a treat from time to time, and be really present while you eat it. Savour the flavour and the texture and feel how good it is to eat a treat, with utter joy, instead of guilt. Health is about progression not perfection. And food should always be joyful! . . . . . #awakenyourhealth #organic #naturopath #nourishment #newyearsresolutions #changinghabits #justeatrealfood

03.01.2022 People feel like their little things do not matter. But when you add one persons actions to the person next door and the person across the road, you can drive really big changes from government and corporations... The more voices we have, the louder our call is. The Amazon produces 20 per cent of the oxygen and is home to over a million indigenous people. The number and coverage of fires they are currently experiencing is unprecedented, estimating as many as 9,000 fire...s started over the last week. As the Amazon fires continue, this SBS article shares some insights into how we can show our support from Australia. 02.01.2022 In the name of detoxing from the silly season, and kicking off with your new years' goals, I wanted to share some ways that you can add more vegetables to your day. Eating well doesn't have to be complicated. Think about tweaking the things you might already be doing. Remember, small changes compound into big results. Start with breakfast Breakfast is a fantastic way to knock off a few of your ‘daily serves’. Cook up 2 eggs... and serve them with 1-2 cups of vegetables. Our favourites are baby spinach, asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, avocado, green beans, and kale. You can cook them all up in the same pan easy! Supercharge Your Smoothie Smoothies are another easy option to increase your vegetable intake. Remember if your adding leafy greens to your smoothie, don’t forget to rotate them to ensure you get a variety of nutrients. Spirulina, chlorella, wheat grass, barley grass, and even baby spinach & cucumber are other options to increase your nutrient intake. Snack on it Chop up some vegetable sticks and enjoy them with a good quality dip such as hummus, tzatziki, or green tahini. You can mix your vegetables up with raw capsicum, cucumber, carrot, celery, cauliflower and broccoli sticks. Top it Off Top of your meals with a generous handful of fresh herbs, they are still ‘green’s, and add a boost of flavour to your meals. Parsley on your soup, coriander on your curry, or rosemary on your roast veg (yum). Juice it Good old vegetable juices are an excellent way to increase your nutrient intake. Remember the key here is for the juice to include mainly vegetables and 1-2 pieces of fruit max. Mix it Up Potato chips can easily be swapped for sweet potato or kale chips. Home roasted, covered in a good oil like virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Think colour with your roast or baked veg the more colour, the higher the nutrient density! 01.01.2022 I want to talk about stress, for a minute. We all have full schedules. We all have people to see, things to do, places to be and commitments to fulfil. Currently, we are more stretched than ever. Sometimes, the concept of 'stress management' can be overwhelming because we might interpret it as something that we need a long period of time for. You might not have time to do a 60-minute yoga class every day or to meditate for 30 minutes each morning. It's okay if you don't. Wh...at we do have, though, are tiny chunks of time that we already spend procrastinating, getting distracted and mindlessly scrolling. In these small chunks of time then, if we manage our attention well, we can use them as a few mindful minutes. So, instead of viewing 'stress management' as this elusive concept that can only be found in a yoga class, use the tiny chunks of time you do have to cultivate a sense of calm. You really can positively affect your state of being, in just a few minutes. There are two ways I'd suggest doing this: 1. Set your alarm twice a day (maybe, 10 am and 3 pm) and when you're alarm goes off, take one minute to breathe deeply, and slowly. Stop what you are doing, time yourself for 60 seconds and breathe in through your nose for 3-4 counts and then out through your nose for 3-4 counts. Do this for one minute and notice how you feel happens when you finish. You can do this anywhere, even at your computer at work, no one will know you're doing it. 2. Each time you go to pick up your phone and mindlessly scroll, see if you can catch yourself doing it. When you notice what you're doing, put the phone down, and take three slow, deep breaths. A good tip with scrolling is to set yourself some boundaries. Nominate a few times during the day when you can look at your social media. You might look at it in the morning, and then again in the afternoon. Other than those times, see if you can get into the habit of catching yourself when you habitually pick your phone up to scroll. Constantly being bombarded with information on our social platforms, really does affect our nervous systems, so become aware of how much time you spend doing it, set yourself boundaries with it and take three slow breaths when you catch yourself mindlessly picking the phone up. This will help unwind your nervous system and also help you become aware of just how many times a day you go to pick up your device out of habit. 01.01.2022 Is vegan the "Game Changer" we all need? Over the past decade, we have witnessed an undeniably increasing interest in plant-based diets, from the ever-expanding demand for oat milk and almond lattes at our local cafes, to vegan-burger patties that bleed. More often were seeing positive plant-based headlines, most recently with the all-vegan menu served at the 2020 Golden Globes, plus the documentary The Game Changers - which became the best-selling documentary ...Continue reading

01.01.2022 A poem for Papatnuku ~ Mother Earth ~ by Ngti Hine/Ngpuhi writer Nadine Anne Hura, and recently shared by Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand. Rest now, e Papatnuku Breathe easy and settle... Right here where you are Well not move upon you For awhile Well stop, well cease Well slow down and stay home Draw each other close and be kind Kinder than weve ever been. I wish we could say we were doing it for you as much as ourselves But hei aha Were doing it anyway Its right. Its time. Time to return Time to remember Time to listen and forgive Time to withhold judgment Time to cry Time to think About others Remove our shoes Press hands to soil Sift grains between fingers Gentle palms Time to plant Time to wait Time to notice To whom we belong For now its just you And the wind And the forests and the oceans and the sky full of rain Finally, its raining! Ka turuturu te wai kamo o Rangi ki runga i a koe Embrace it This sacrifice of solitude we have carved out for you He iti noaiho a small offering People always said it wasnt possible To ground flights and stay home and stop our habits of consumption But it was It always was. We were just afraid of how much it was going to hurt and it IS hurting and it will hurt and continue to hurt But not as much as you have been hurt. So be still now Wrap your hills around our absence Loosen the concrete belt cinched tight at your waist Rest. Breathe. Recover. Heal And we will do the same.
