17.01.2022 We are now accepting new patients - Please call the practice on 02 5701 5533 to book your appointment.

15.01.2022 Counselling doesn’t have to be inaccessible. No more waiting for an appointment for a referral only to find out there is an even longer waiting list. Sometimes when you need to talk to someone you need to talk to someone now. That’s where we step in.... Many people avoid talking to a professional because of the time it takes to get a referral; waiting times; having to ask for time off work; fear of stigma you name it. You don’t have to miss out on treatment for depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and changes, parenting issues, grief and loss all because professional treatment takes too long to organise. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS. We have a range of options including video, phone and e-journals to suit your schedule and budget. It’s the NEW WAY to get the help you need.

11.01.2022 How are you going with the current COVID-19 restrictions? Personally in our household, I find it varies throughout the day. At some times I am feeling like I'v...e got it down pat - kids are fed, house is tidy for greater than 90 seconds, I get maybe six minutes of work completed at a time ... then before long I am back to having to respond to a request for a drink from a different coloured cup or to break up a fight over nerf guns. So many times I sit there and wonder at how the heck is this going to be the new normal. I feel overwhelmed with it at times while at others I embrace the forced slow down. I remind myself of the privilege I have to maintain an income while working flexibly at home and keep my family are safe. My heart reaches out to those who are not as privileged - who are out of work or forced to keep working in environments where you may be exposed. Or for people who are forced to stay in environments that are dangerous and unsafe because the ones closes to them are violent. This is not ok and Aware Family Wellness is here for you if you or someone you care about is in this position. Like all the clients I see in my practice, I have no idea how to fit it all in - full time work, full time parenting, maintaining a household, doing the school from home thing and to be honest it's overwhelming and exhausting. My kids screen time has increased ten thousand percent while their outside activities and fresh air has become a fleeting memory. But I bet I'm not the only one. Like so many people, forced change can be frustrating and overwhelming. "I just want my life back" for a wee while was the daily mantra ... but then I realised ... do I? Do I want the frantic pace of school drop offs and racing to work and quick dashes into the supermarket on the way home with tearful and tired kids who end up hating me most afternoons because the demands placed on them of full time daycare and kindergarten are a big ask for little minds. These slower mornings - without the rush... with time for a cup of tea and shared breakfast and not screaming or scrambling for a matching pair of socks ... I'm kind of starting to enjoy them. My kids behaviour seems to be improving daily (not that it was particularly rotten ... they are just 3 and 6 so normal level of rotten haha) as a result of increased family time. So I started to pay attention to the things that didn't suck. I can't change the global pandemic but what I can change is the way that I approach it. Slowness. Time to catch a breath. It is OK to simultaneously be concerned about what is happening across the globe and sad for the enormous number of lives lost, while being scared about our future or grateful that at this moment, today, we are ok. We are complex creatures who are capable of many thoughts and emotions and it's OK to dwell in each one for a while. For people with existing mental health concerns - depression, anxiety, trauma ... this period of being forced to stay at home can be highly traumatic and triggering, stripping them of existing coping mechanisms and self-care strategies. For those of you in the community who are struggling - please reach out - either to your existing support networks, your GP, or us here at Aware Family Wellness. We have counsellors with rebates available or a free clinic run by our final year social work student Dana where you can receive emotional support during this time and be linked in to additional services if you need. What do you think? Do you oscillate at times between being overwhelmed and being ok? Does it just suck at the moment for you - or does the occasional silver lining shine through?
