04.01.2022 "MOST SPECTACULAR" BLAZE AT SOUTH MIINE SOUTH MINE FIRE 1919THE FIRE THAT CONSUMED A MILL AND HEADFRAME - The Mine mill and main shaft headframe was destroyed after a spectacular fire swept through the area in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 30, 1919. The fire was described as the most spectacular that Broken Hill had seen. It lit up the town. People heard the mine whistles and came in their hundreds to wat...ch as the building blazed from end to end and from top to bottom. It wasn't until the flames died down towards dawn that the people felt the July cold.Mystery surrounds the start of the fire. The big strike was only three months old, feelings against the mining companies were running high, and it was natural that the Mine Manager Mr Wainwright, should suspect a crank element among the militants. He didn't mince words about it either. When a "Barrier Daily Truth" reporter asked for a comment, Wainwright replied "I'm not making any statement to you. Some of your bloody friends have done this". BDT printed the reply in full, in capitals. The police report stated that there were suspicious circumstances, and with some reason; there had been three small fires in that vicinity in the previous three weeks, all having been put out. At all events, no one hindered the firemen in their work, and there was no suggestion of an organised plot. There were counter-accusations that the management had long planned to replace the whole of the mill plant, and that machinery had arrived for the purpose. It turned out that this work involved a minor section of the plant only. The damage was estimated at 70,000, of which insurance covered 35,000.At Port Pirie, the effects of the Broken Hill strike were being felt, and 700 employees were to be put off. But for a few hours, the local scene was dominated by the fire. It started on the cracker (crusher) floor of the mill (about 6m above the ground level) and spread through the building. The flames travelled along the Oregon bridge that connected the mill with the poppet - head of the main shaft. The poppet head was also of Oregon timber. Inevitably it too toppled into the wreckage. The fire fighters had their problems. One of the water storage tanks was empty, having been emptied for cleaning. Other reserves on the mine were soon exhausted, and firemen had to lay out for hundreds of metres of hose to the town main in Eyre Street and water was pumped up to the fire from there. One of the pumps in Eyre Street was steam operated. Firemen fed the boiler with coal from the mine, but they couldn't keep up the supply, so a vehicle was obtained. This turned out to be a hose cart drawn by Jean - the fire horse from Railwaytown Fire Station. After a couple of loads had been brought from the mine, Jean became disenchanted with the work and cantered off back to Railwaytown, with one wheel dragging because it was still chained to keep it from turning. The firemen rounded her up and put her to work again. They did their best - the fire had such a good hold that nothing could have saved the mill. Even the engine that supplied power for the mill was destroyed and that was housed in a separate stone building. As it was the smoking ruins presented a dismal sight on the following day, and the company was faced with the job of assessing the damage and planning a reconstruction program (it took two years.)
