24.01.2022 Happy Friday! Have a lovely weekend

23.01.2022 Navigating health and the healthcare system can be difficult for many young Australians, and for young LGBTQI+ people, it can be even harder. Through research over the past several years, we know that particular groups such as the LGBTQI+ community, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, and those experiencing homelessness, are more vulnerable to ill health, inaccessible healthcare and negative health outcomes than the general population. AWCH’s vision is the be...st possible healthcare for children and young people. We recognise the value of diverse experiences and the impact these may have on a young person’s healthcare journey. In order to ensure that we are striving for our vision in a wholly inclusive way, we aspire to highlight the diversity among Australia’s young people and the importance and complexity of intersectional experiences within young people's healthcare journeys. - Bella

23.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day and an opportunity to raise awareness for the estimated 15 million babies who are born preterm each year globally. Over 48,000 of those babies are born in Australia and admitted to neonatal intensive care (NICU) and special care units. At AWCH we believe in ensuring the rights of children and young people and it's never too early to start. The Raising Children Network has a great fact-sheet about advocating for your baby in NICU which is worth r...eading. https://raisingchildren.net.au//neo/advocating-in-the-nicu There is also some fantastic information and personal experiences of having a premature baby on the 'Miracle Babies' website : https://www.miraclebabies.org.au/ Nurtureline- 24 hour family support line: 1300 622 243 #WorldPrematurityDay

23.01.2022 Happy International Volunteer Management Day 2020! Quite appropriately, the theme for this year is 'What's Next?' The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges on many levels, and for those of us leading volunteer efforts, we have found ourselves in positions we never imagined. ... It’s our hope that we will continue to have time to reflect on the lessons, challenges and most importantly opportunities that this challenging time has provided us! We hope that IVMDay 2020 is a day for volunteering leaders, the world over, to take stock, collaborate and consolidate for an even brighter future for volunteering. It is also a day to say a huge THANK YOU to all those leading volunteer programs.

21.01.2022 Every young person deserves to live free from harassment and exclusion, but as this report and many previous reports make clear, LGBTQA+ young people continue to experience hostility in public, in their homes, on the sports field and at school. We have to recognise that context as we reflect upon the very high rates of poor mental health that we documented, - Associate Professor Bourne La Trobe University has released their findings from the 'Writing Themsleves In 4', a sur...vey which was conducted in 2019 and asked 6,418 LGBTQA+ people aged 14 to 21 about their experiences with education, homelessness, harassment, assault, mental health, healthcare, community connections and more. Although distressing, these results help to put a spotlight on the issues facing LGBTQIA+ Youth today. 21.01.2022 Experiences of a Ward Grandparent: When I retired I was looking for a rewarding program and I knew about the AWCH Ward Grandparent Program as I had previously read about it. I applied, and lucky me, I was accepted! I love being with the children and watching them thrive under the wonderful care they receive. I also enjoy being with and helping their parents.... There isn’t usually a ‘typical day’ as an AWCH Ward Grandparent. My day starts at 9am and hopefully I’m there for breakfast time. Then it’s play time, morning sleep (depending on age) and then lunch. I sometimes accompany children to attend physio etc, if it’s needed. The hardest part of being an AWCH Ward Grandparent is watching a child in pain or when particularly unwell, all you can do is comfort them and it is also extremely hard if a child passes. Being a Ward Grandparent is rewarding even though it can be tough but seeing a sick child go home and lead a healthy life is just amazing! The friendship that is formed with other Ward Grandparents is a perk of the program. - AWCH Ward Grandparent

04.01.2022 Are you between the ages of 12-24? Have you ever felt like your age has had an impact on the healthcare you recieved? If yes, please consider taking our survey! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/yphcageism The purpose of this survey is to explore young people’s experiences of age discrimination, within the healthcare system and the ways age impacts the healthcare we receive.
