23.01.2022 National skin cancer action week this year started on 15 November and ends today. It seems ironic that during this week I have also been told that my Squamous Cell Carcinoma on my nose has come back, and needs to be surgically removed ASAP. I am probably going to have a decent scar this time, right in the middle of my face. This terrifies me as, even though I try so hard not to be vain, I am. At first I questioned this, thinking perhaps this is a lesson to finally le...t that vanity go, however, if I wasn’t so vain, continually examining my face and body in the mirror, perhaps I would not have found this tiny little scaly fragment of skin which has the potential to kill. So I am grateful for my vanity at this point. I am getting my nose operated on, on 4 December, They think it is early so, I have a 95% chance of getting it in time. If I was to wait though, it could be a whole different story. I don’t have time to wait for a plastic surgeon, so I’m just going in with the take what you need attitude and I’ll get it all fixed up later if I have to. My doctor is confidant that it will be small, and that it is early. Still scary though. Let this be a reminder to you all, check your skin. All over your body. If there is anything, even the smallest raised bump or scaly lesion, don’t wait and see, go to your local cancer clinic or dermatologist and get it checked. My GP was surprised at my diagnosis, they are not well trained in this area, so see a specialist. So get naked today in front of the mirror, put your glasses on and hunt. Get someone you trust to look at the parts of you, you can’t see. Make a hat part of your wardrobe staple, and wear one every day. Don’t forget your sunscreen and be vigilant.
