25.01.2022 A useful way of approaching tasks

25.01.2022 Today, we're thanking the organisations, big and small across the world, who are providing practical, positive support to people with a disability and their fam...ilies during this time. iDareU loves and appreciates those organisations who reach out to people with a disability and help make their lives richer and fuller through their kindness. #givingtuesday See more

25.01.2022 Day 14: Careers & Job Search Tips There are two sets of skills required when you’re applying for jobs. There are the written skills and there are the interview skills. If you keep sending applications and don’t get interviews, you MUST review your written application. You might be making some simple mistakes that are getting in the way of your success. Ask someone you know to check it over for you, preferably someone who is a grammar pedant.

25.01.2022 Day 27: Career & Job Search Tips In a job interview, shake hands with each of the interviewers and SMILE. Smiling has a positive physiological effect on your performance in any difficult situation. The movements of muscles in your face (during the act of smiling) trigger endorphins to be released into your body. Endorphins are responsible for making us happy and they lower stress levels and lower blood pressure. Even if your smile is a polite one rather than because you act...ually feel happy, your body will respond to the physical act of you smiling, anyway. Endorphins help reduce the stress hormone Cortisol, so it actually makes us feel more positive. Remember to smile in the interview. You will be helping yourself to relax.

24.01.2022 Are there any other skills or attributes that you think are really important?

24.01.2022 I have been struggling with this myself. I love helping people gain more power over their lives but I know I shouldn’t be doing it at the expense of my own financial well-being. Does this article resonate with any of you, too?

24.01.2022 Day 23: Career & Job Search Tips By the time you get to a job interview, the employer or recruiter is fairly sure that you have the skills and/or experience they’re looking for. The purpose of the interview, from their perspective, is to gauge whether you have the personal and professional qualities that will make you a good fit within their team and their organisation. That’s something you won’t really have any control over so JUST BE YOURSELF. Don’t try to appear to be someone you’re not. If you’re not a good fit, you would have been unhappy there anyway. Treat it as practice and let it go.

24.01.2022 Day 18: Career & Job Search Tips Write your own job applications. Don’t use a resume service unless you know someone who is really good at it. Often, resume services tend to produce applications that have a ‘sameness’ about them and the reader doesn’t get a sense of the person who’s applying for the job. I would rather receive an application that is a little unsophisticated but gave me some clues about the person who is applying for the job than one of those glitzy meaningless documents.

23.01.2022 Day 28: Career & Job Search Tips If we don’t feel confident in job interviews, we are more likely to not project our voices well. So, keep your chin up and project that voice forward. If the employer can’t hear you or understand what you’re saying, they will think that you’re ‘hard work’ and you will not get any further in the process. Using your voice well is facilitated by good breathing, breathing down deep into your lungs rather than taking shallow breaths into the top of your chest. Taking deeper breaths will also help steady your nerves and help you come across as more confident.

22.01.2022 Day 29: Career & Job Search Tips If you have not heard back from the employer or recruiter within the time they specified, call and ask whether a decision is likely to be made soon. Don’t assume that they have made a decision and haven’t called. If you have been unsuccessful with your interview, NEVER ask ‘why didn’t I get the job?’ The employer will immediately become defensive or cautious and you won’t get any useful information for next time.... ALWAYS ask ‘what can I do next time to improve my interview skills?’ Asking for assistance is much more likely to elicit a positive and constructive response than asking a question that could have the interviewer feeling defensive. Really listen if they provide you with constructive feedback. It’s not always easy to hear but can turn out to be quite useful to you for future interviews.

21.01.2022 Day 16: Careers & Job Search Tips Before I give you more tips about job applications, I want you to consider their purpose. Their purpose is to get you to the interview. That’s it! That’s all! It is NOT, NOT, NOT to tell the employer or recruiter everything about you. You need to cherry pick the main things that you want the employer to know AND those things need to be related to the job they are advertising. There will be some things you might always say, though.... What are two things that you always tell employers about you? See more

21.01.2022 Day 30 of 30 Days of Career & Job Search Tips I’ve saved the most important tip till last. You will have quicker job search success have several applications in progress AT THE SAME TIME.... It’s not just about numbers, although that will make a difference. Putting in one application and then waiting to see how that goes, finding out you didn’t get the job and then starting again is a bad use of your time and energy. It often has a negative and incremental impact on your self-esteem and your motivation level. If this is your approach to job search, STOP IT NOW! Apply for lots of jobs through online sites, use all your networks, approach companies you’d like to work for and keep researching your possibilities. Do it all! Put LOTS OF ENERGY & PLENTY OF ACTION into your job search. It’s the only way to fly! And to be successful more quickly.

20.01.2022 Day 22: Career & Job Search Tips Today I want to emphasise the importance of LinkedIn in today's job search matrix. Professionals need to have a good LinkedIn profile, catchy headline, interesting summary and a good resume. Also, make sure that your photograph is as good as you can get it! Head and shoulders, warm smile. If you spend the time getting your profile right (or pay someone to help you do that), it will pay off in getting you noticed and subsequently approached by businesses looking for staff.

20.01.2022 Some good points here regarding resumes.

19.01.2022 Some very valid points here

17.01.2022 Day 15: Careers & Job Search Tips Resumes have changed. You no longer put details on there such as marital status or date of birth. Career objectives are passé. Career summaries are OK as long as they are concise short and sharp. Unless you’ve had a long and illustrious career, your resume should not be longer than 2-3 pages and, if you’ve had that long career, 3-4 pages will be sufficient. It’s also important that your work history and your education/training history be listed in reverse chronological order. That is, the most recent experiences should be first. There are heaps of templates online. Check them out but don’t go for one that has lots of fancy formatting because that scanning technology won’ like them and will reject them anyway.

16.01.2022 Put away the highlighter. Skip the flash cards.

16.01.2022 Integrity is a high value of mine. What’s a high value characteristics yours?

13.01.2022 A good article about mentors. Thanks Cindy Freeney.

13.01.2022 Day 25: Career & Job Search Tips Being prepared for an interview also includes doing a thorough online search about the company and, in particular, of their website. Become very familiar with the company values, what they do, where they’re located and who works there. This could be invaluable information for you to have during the interview. If you’re applying for an IT job, this will be even more important as you may get asked to critique their website or asked how the website could be improved.

13.01.2022 iDareU is apolitical. If any politician wants to contribute to us, we're OK with that. Another shout out today is to the local federal member, Michael Sukkar. M...ichael's office has been generous in time and in printing out colour brochures, etc, when we need them. We appreciate that. Thanks to Michael and his staff. #GivingTuesdayNow See more

13.01.2022 I like book lists. They always give me good ideas about what read next.

11.01.2022 Another good booklist!

10.01.2022 iDareU thanks all of the people who have made life easier for others during the COVID19 pandemic. The work you do, have done, and are continuing to do for us all is very much appreciated. #givingtuesday

08.01.2022 Day 20: Career & Job Search Tips Your networks, the people you know or are connected to in some way, are your best sources of employment. Have you ever got a job as a result of a connection of yours? Tell us about it.

08.01.2022 Day 24: Career & Job Search Tips The critical factor in succeeding at job interviews is PREPARATION. Make a list of the most commonly asked interview questions and then work out what your answers will be. Practice saying those answers out loud. If you are nervous in job interviews, ask a friend to ask you the questions and practice answering to them. ... If you have answers already prepared to at least some of the questions, it will give you a greater feeling of control within the interview and your nerves will be reduced. What are some of the most commonly asked questions you’ve been asked in interviews?

07.01.2022 Purpose gives you the grit to succeed.

07.01.2022 Have you been asked any of the four questions in the article?

05.01.2022 He always makes sense..

05.01.2022 Day 19: Career & Job Search Tips Before we get onto interview skills, it is worth talking about how people get jobs in 2018. Recent research shows that only 2-4% of people are successful using online services such as seek.com.au or indeed.com or similar. On the other hand, 85% people get their jobs through networks of some sort or another. Do these percentages surprise you?

04.01.2022 Day 21: Career & Job Search Tips When you let the people in your networks know that you’re looking for work BE SPECIFIC about what you’re looking for! ‘Don’t say I’m looking for work’ or ‘I’ll do anything’. Neither of those statements is likely to elicit any leads for you to follow up. It may not be all that helpful to focus your job search around a particular job title either. Let them know exactly what SKILLS you want to be using and HOW you want to help people or organisations. Focusing your job search in this way will get people thinking about how they help you. It’s likely to lead to a much more productive outcome for you.

03.01.2022 Day 17: Careers & Job Search Tips The focus of resumes has changed from listing duties to listing achievements. You can provide an overview of your role but not too much detail. Your achievements need to show a measurement of the difference you’ve made or reveals something about your character. For example, ‘increased sales from $40K to $50K in a 12-month period’. The achievements don’t have to be that grand, though, and might be related to the number of people you counselled, or the fact that you met deadlines 100% of the time. If you're a school leaver, you could say something like '98% school attendance record'.

03.01.2022 Another interesting article from Inc

02.01.2022 Day 26: Career & Job Search Tips Further preparation for your job interview will include making sure that your ‘interview clothes’ are clean and pressed; that your shoes are not scuffed; that you have checked your GPS to see how to get there and how long it will take you; and/or consulted the bus or train timetable to make sure that you’ll get there with time to spare. When you have it all sorted ahead of time, you will be more relaxed on the day. I always work out the locati...on of a nearby café so that I can relax prior to the interview with a coffee. What strategies do you use to ensure that you’re relaxed when you go into an interview?
