24.01.2022 22 September 2020 COVID-19 ZERO new cases today in SA and SA Government announced lifting of NSW border Restrictions. South Australia will open its bo...rder to New South Wales travellers from midnight tomorrow, after the eastern state reached 14 days without reporting any COVID-19 cases with an unknown source. Premier Steven Marshall made the significant announcement after the state’s transition committee met this morning, describing the border reopening as a massive relief to people who have been dislocated from friends, from family, from business opportunities. The change means from Thursday, anyone entering South Australia from New South Wales will not have to quarantine for 14 days. Those who have arrived in South Australia from New South Wales over the past 14 days up until midnight tomorrow will still have to finish their full 14 days of mandatory quarantine. Our borders have been the frontline in our defence here in South Australia: they have served us well, they have enabled us to open up our economy and get tens of thousands of people back to work, but it is now time because of the reduced risk in New South Wales for us to reopen up those borders, Marshall said. I am really delighted because I know there have been many, many people inconvenienced by this restriction, but it has been a very important restriction that has kept our state safe. New South Wales recorded its last COVID-19 case with an unknown source on September 8 meaning the state today reached 14 days of no cases linked to community transmission. However, South Australia’s chief public health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said she wanted to wait until midnight tomorrow to find out if there were any more cases reported in New South Wales before the state reopened its borders. She said SA Health officials had examined the concerning case of an infected Sydney taxi driver but were satisfied it was a risk that could be managed. Spurrier urged South Australians travelling to New South Wales to wear masks on planes and public transport, wash their hands frequently and check the NSW Health website for updates. She said the decision to reopen the state’s border did carry risk, but we can’t just wrap ourselves in cotton wool forever. The state’s transition committee decided to keep other social distancing restrictions in place. At the moment in South Australia we feel quite comfortable that we have a good level of restrictions for the level of risk, Spurrier said. When we’re opening the borders, people will appreciate that if we don’t have any cases that we know of in South Australia then our risk of COVID-19 is importation people bringing the disease into our state. I think our own directions, which are put in place to protect South Australians, are absolutely at the right level. New South Wales this morning reported two new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours both returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine. Meanwhile, Victoria recorded 28 new cases. Spurrier said it was pleasing to see the number of new COVID-19 cases in Victoria trending down, but there were no plans to reopen South Australia’s border to that state.

23.01.2022 Good News VACCINE HOPE Australian Government working on deal to protect millions of Australians from virus AUSTRALIA is in advanced talks to secure Oxford Universitys coronavirus vaccine, which could be delivered before Christmas. Federal Government in talks with pharmaceutical company to protect millions from deadly virus Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned some restrictions, including people staying 1.5m apart, are likely to remain in place until the end... of the year. AS COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc around the world, and Melbourne struggles under tight lockdown, it is enormously hopeful news that a vaccine being developed at Oxford University could be available by the end of the year. While hurdles must still be overcome in the final stages of testing the vaccine, the Australian Government is right to be in advanced talks to ensure the immuniser is quickly available here for those most in need. Already there are orders for 400 million doses worldwide of the vaccine one of many under development should it prove successful in trials involving 40,000 people in the US, South Africa and Brazil. Yet caution is needed. Even if the Oxford vaccine does work, it is unlikely to be widely available quickly. The production facility in Wales can only make 40 million doses a year, making it imperative , as Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said, that the vaccine is available to be manufactured globally. In that light, it is also encouraging that other vaccines are forging ahead, including one by a team at Flinders University in Adelaide , and another at the University of Queensland, both of which have now passed initial trials showing they are safe and generate an immune response. Worldwide there are about 165 COVID-19 vaccines being developed, about half a dozen in late-stage trials. Another, by US company Novovax, recently passed initial trials in Australia . Dr Paul Griffin, who was involved in those trials and also works on testing for the University of Queensland vaccine, told The Australian newspaper last week that he believed the world would have at least one if not a few vaccines that would be moderately effective. Dr Griffin said it was possible a vaccine could be available from early to mid next year, with staggered availability for healthcare workers and the vulnerable. With suppression of the virus proving so difficult, all the world wishes our scientists speedy success in the months ahead. See more

21.01.2022 South Australia 15 August 2020 F A N T A S T I C N E W S ZERO New Cases and Thebarton Cluster has been contained 94 + 1400 safe and out of isol...ation. South Australians ought to be very proud and grateful to our most amazing frontline heroes and our everyday heroes in our community!!! Today, SA Health reveals what it took to contain virus outbreak SOUTH Australias latest coronavirus cluster has been contained, paving the way for more than 1400 people to be released from isolation today. Check out The Advertiser News (see below) which revealed how SA Health destroyed the Thebarton cluster linked to five COVID-19 cases and two Adelaide schools by harnessing vital help from the states multicultural leaders and their communities. In a major breakthrough last night, 94 close contacts mostly migrant students were cleared of having the virus, Professor Nicola Spurrier, SAs grateful top public doctor declared the clusters transmission halted. Congratulations South Australia. Well done SA Health and community leaders involved, particularly Hussain Razaiat and AFGHANI community leaders; Tamara and MYSA Multicultural Youth SA Team in their amazing assistance and support to those affected by the Thebarton Cluster. I have always been very proud of our multicultural communities in SA because I believe we are more united, more responsible, cooperative, caring and more proactive. The spirit of We are in this together is proved to be true and strong again and again, right here in SA. Thank you very much! COVID CLUSTER NOW DONE AND BUSTED We know COVID-19 is a virus that doesnt discriminate and people of all ages and backgrounds can be affected, chief public health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said. Today I am one step closer to saying we have resolved this cluster. While we will continue to very closely monitor the situation, we have had no further transmission within the close contacts. But Prof Spurrier, pictured, said she would be completely reassured it were contained after two, 14-day incubation cycles were completed in a fortnight. The cluster shutdown came as SA Health yesterday recorded a new case. But officials said the states 460th COVID-19 case, a man in his 30s who arrived from India two weeks ago, posed no public health risk. After flying from New Delhi on August 1, he recorded a positive test on his 12th quarantine day at the CBDs Pullman Hotel. He is among seven active or infectious patients, including the cluster source, an Afghan man aged in his 20s from Blair Athol who returned from Victoria. His close female friend, a Thebarton Senior College student aged in her 20s, is ill, as is her Afghan student mate, also in her 20s, and a Walkers Arms hotel cleaner, aged in his 50s, who had a 20-minute chat with the male source. A fourth Afghan student, 26, has recovered. The last of more than 1400 family, friends and other contacts will today leave hotel quarantine or selfisolation at home. Close contacts included migrant students from the Middle East, Africa, China and other parts of Asia. Many were separated from family but most return to school on Monday . Im very grateful for the co-operation of all the young people involved as I recognise this has been a very stressful time, Prof Spurrier said. She said when the states fifth cluster became apparent on July 30, a key factor that enabled us to manage (it) was reaching out to the community in a timely manner . After urgent talks with more 20 cultural leaders, translated information was sent to more than 5000 community members and special language hotlines launched to manage inquiries. In contrast, Victoria had failed to adequately communicate with its own migrant communities, which fuelled a surge in cases. Mosques and community centres were shut across Adelaides northern suburbs while public alerts were issued about several businesses. Prof Spurrier gave out her personal number to the leaders and urged them to contact her at any time. Afghan United Association chairman Hussain Razaiat , 47, said it was important the community listened to official advice. At that time, there was a panic, and some state of fear (in) the community, in particular from new arrivals, who had come from oppressed regimes , he said. We assured them they must co-operate with the government to successfully stop it spreading. We are pleased it has been stopped so everybody can get back to normality. Multicultural Youth SA chief executive Tamara Stewart-Jones , 36, said her staff volunteered help with food, advice and supplies 24-7 . SA Health will today launch its first multicultural mobile testing clinic at Edinburgh North in the northern suburbs. 13.01.2022 HAY FEVER versus COVID-19 See the diagram below With spring comes seasonal hay fever, which can cause some symptoms similar to COVID-19. ... If you routinely experience hay fever, talk to your GP about starting preventive medication. If your symptoms differ from previous experiences, talk to your GP. Many people with asthma also have hay fever. Hay fever is the common name for allergic (or seasonal) rhinitis. Symptoms of hay fever Watery, itchy eyes Sneezing and blocked nose. Hay fever triggers Symptoms occur when the person is exposed to environmental allergens, such as pollens, house dust mites, mould and animal dander. For some people these symptoms occur all year round because they may be caused by allergens that are present in the home or at work (house dust mites, animal dander or occupationally-related allergens). Some people have only seasonal hay fever, in spring and summer, often when pollen concentrations (from grasses, trees and weeds) are very high. For many people with asthma, having hay fever can worsen their asthma. Management of hay fever In the past, many people considered hay fever to be a nuisance, with no effective treatment Hay fever can now be effectively treated in many cases. This requires a step by step approach dependent on the severity of symptoms Talk to your GP to ensure you are on the most effective treatment for you If you live in metropolitan Adelaide, you can check the daily pollen count on various weather apps, or by searching on Google. If you have an allergy to pollens, stay indoors during thunderstorms in the pollen season. https://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au//asthma+and+hay+f/hay+fever

13.01.2022 Young People must stay alert and should continue to be vigilant the headline Covid infected young facing a life of disability sounds pretty scary in The Australian News There are clusters of mysterious covid cases in NSW among young people that had authorities worried. August 8, 2020 (extract) ... A leading Australian epidemiologist has explained why young people now account for the nations highest number of COVID-19 cases as the worlds youth have been blamed for fuelling a surge in infections. People aged between 20 and 29 account for the largest number of coronavirus cases and the highest rate of infection in Australia, according to the Department of Health. She also explained that a lot of the transmissions occur in families and households So we are seeing lots of spread in families and that will bring the average age down because we see children and young people infected in that environment as well. Her comments come as young people around the world have been blamed for flouting social distancing rules and fuelling a surge in infections. Authorities across Europe, the US and North America are facing the issue of how to ensure social distancing measure are still enforced among young people when coronavirus restrictions are being loosened. This week, WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan pleaded with young people to act responsibly after the number of infections among young people jumped in a number of countries. Ask yourself the question: do I really need to go to that party? he said. In NSW, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state was on a knife edge this week and asked young people to check their behaviour. Were not saying dont socialise or dont go out at all but we are saying please limit your behaviour just in the next few weeks, she said on Thursday. If you have the virus and you go out five times a week to different places you could potentially be spreading it to five different locations, and then we have to contract trace everybody. UK police have also been forced to shut down illegal parties and warn people to maintain their distance on the hottest day of the year on Friday. Australian National University Professor of Infectious Diseases Peter Collignon said the challenge is that while young people are more likely to be infected, theyre less likely to get very sick, leading to complacency. https://www.news.com.au///c43fb1addfde8879573437cdefd73514 https://www.theaustralian.com.au//b571bb3dcc538872ff34c3a6

12.01.2022 Join Yuot A. Alaak in conversation with Australian Refugee Association Inc CEO Deb Stringer as he discusses his life-affirming memoir, Father of the Lost Boys. During the Second Sudanese Civil War, thousands of South Sudanese boys were displaced from their villages or orphaned in attacks from northern government troops. Many became refugees in Ethiopia. There, in 1989, teacher and community leader Mecak Ajang Alaak assumed care of the Lost Boys in a bid to protect them from b...ecoming child soldiers. So began a four-year journey from Ethiopia to Sudan and on to the safety of a Kenyan refugee camp. Together they endured starvation, animal attacks and the horrors of landmines and aerial bombardment. This eyewitness account by Mecak Ajang Alaaks son, Yuot, is the extraordinary true story of a man who never ceased to believe that the pen is mightier than the gun. See more

01.01.2022 No matter your child’s age, preparing them for a COVID-19 test will help make the experience a little easier for them. . Here are a few tips on how to prepare ...your child: Paint a picture for them: describe in age appropriate detail what they can expect before you head out. This should include where they will go, who will be there, what they will see and how long it will take. Let them know that friendly staff will be wearing masks, caps, gowns and gloves to protect themselves and others from getting sick. Keep them distracted during the wait with their favourite toy, books, music, or a movie/TV show on your phone or tablet. Explain that they’ll put a little stick with a soft end in their nose and mouth, and that it won’t hurt but might feel funny. Plan a fun ‘reward’ that they will get at home after the test (your child will need to self-isolate until they’ve received a negative test result and their symptoms have resolved). . If your child doesn’t like being touched or gets scared in clinical settings, please let the staff know and they’ll work out a way to keep your child feel calm and comforted. See more
