24.01.2022 Pathology nurse Neeny Hanssen has been "cruising" around the cancer centre today as part of her efforts to mark International Pathology Day . Neeny, of Dorevitch Pathology, chose to come dressed as the Titanic in line with the event's letter T theme, to represent "thank you". Adding a splash of red to her costume, Neeny said her passenger liner soon doubles as a "blood vessel" .

21.01.2022 Today marked the official launch of Terry's Big Bearded Ball Drop, which is raising money for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund. The campaign is hoping to recruit 100 "bearded" ambassadors to help raise $200,000 ahead of a ball drop at Benalla Showgrounds on Saturday, November 21. The campaign is inspired by Markwood resident, Terry Greaves, who has been treated at the cancer centre for metastatic melanoma.... Terry was joined at the launch today by bearded ambassador and Ovens and Murray General Manager Sean Barrett, as well as Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund board member, David Baker. 21.01.2022 Our Myrtleford boot campers have made their virtual 74km journey to the cancer centre and are on their way home! And they've raised more than $2000 in the process! So successful has their mission to row, run or ski the distance been, that the group of about eight Myrtleford Bootcamp members has now set themselves the challenge to walk 51.4km from Myrtleford to the top of Mt Buffalo - this time in person (restrictions allowing).... They will continue to fundraise until the final leg of the walk on October 24. Organiser Helen Howell said the group was grateful for the opportunity to stay focused and positive during these uncertain times. "We have people close to us who continue to battle cancer so it’s good to feel like we can contribute in some way," she said. "Let’s keep the money rolling in with some renewed motivation and efforts." Pictured is Janelle McMasters after she ran the first 74km earlier this month. 21.01.2022 For many people with cancer, COVID-19 has increased their feelings of stress and anxiety at a time when they may also be isolated from family and friends. Since March, psycho-oncology services provided through the Wellness Centre, which were already at capacity, have surged by almost 40 per cent. Clinical psychologist, Dr Anne-Marie Daw (pictured), said social isolation associated with coronavirus was adding an extra layer of stress for a lot of patients.... Funded by the Trust Fund, the counselling sessions have continued to be provided by phone or Healthdirect video calls throughout the pandemic. Any patients or carers in need of extra support can contact the Wellness Centre on (02) 6064 1562 or email [email protected] To read the full story, click on the link in the comments section below

20.01.2022 From the Fight Cancer Foundation to now the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund, the Commercial Club Albury has been a major supporter of cancer charities since 2011. General Manager Jeff Duck (pictured) said the club was proud to have donated $65,000 to the Trust over the past five years. "Having such a modern facility in our own area, where our local community can receive treatment without having to travel hundreds of kilometres and be away from family and supp...ort is just outstanding," he said. "Unfortunately, we have seen our own staff, their families and their friends, be affected by cancer in some way and to have a local facility in our area is both comforting and satisfying." Commercial Club Albury is a leading registered club in country NSW and offers extensive facilities including dining, entertainment and sports. The club employs more than 300 people from the local area, many qualifying in different trades and degrees throughout their journey. To find out how you can become a Corporate Friend of the Trust, just like the Commercial Club, please contact us on (02) 6064 1538 or email [email protected]

19.01.2022 Shake off the winter lockdown blues and take part in the new Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020 on Sunday, November 22! To ensure vital funds can still be raised for the cancer centre during COVID-19, we announced today that our major fundraising event featuring 5km, 10km and 20km walks will be held online this year. After the opening ceremony is streamed live to the web from 7am, participants will be challenged to walk their selected distance anywhere in their community, and share t...heir photos and experiences online. Trust Fund Manager, Kristy McMahon, said a virtual event would allow the Sunshine Walk community to stay connected and achieve something positive together in these uncertain times. The health and safety of our participants, spectators and volunteers is our number one priority, with cancer patients being among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, she said. A virtual event will allow everyone including cancer patients and their carers to participate in their own socially-distanced walk, and to connect with other participants via social media and the website. Participants will be encouraged to dress up for the walk and share their photos, with prizes awarded to those who go to the most effort. There are also challenge cups for individuals and teams that raise the most money. Kristy is pictured with Sunshine Walk Ambassadors Jorja and Matt Langbine, and their son Tex, and Trust Fund board member Di Thomas. 19.01.2022 Last October, Regan Lions became the first person to undergo a breast reconstruction at Albury Hospital, thanks to new equipment funded by the Trust. After having a mastectomy in 2018, Mrs Lions was placed on a waiting list to have her left breast rebuilt in Melbourne. But thanks to your generous donations, we were able to invest $337,000 in new surgical equipment which meant Mrs Lions, of Howlong, could have the life-changing surgery close to her home and family.... For the last two years I only had one breast which made me feel very self-conscious, Mrs Lions, 37, said. Being so young especially it really impacted on my self-image, and I wondered what I looked like in my clothes. Now to look in the mirror and see two breasts, it makes me feel complete again and that I can finally start to put cancer behind me. Mrs Lions is pictured with husband, Mark, and children Jhai, 14, Tess, 7, and Lara, 9. To read the full story, click on the link in the comments section below

19.01.2022 Here at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund we get to meet lots of inspiring people - just like Grace Ferguson and Remi James. The 8 year olds recently met with Trust Fund manager, Kristy McMahon, to present a cheque for $265 they raised by running a cake stall. The girls baked yo-yo biscuits, date balls, brownies, muffins and honey joys, which sold out in a matter of hours. This just goes to show that you don’t need to be big to make a difference!

16.01.2022 Kevin Allitt brought cheer to hundreds of people last month by decking out his Thurgoona home with Christmas lights He has now brought that cheer to the cancer centre by presenting the Trust Fund with donations collected as part of his Christmas lights display. Kevin (pictured centre) raised $1217, which was matched by his soon-to-be neighbour Bruce Gibbens (pictured left), who lost his wife Dianne to cancer in 2016.... Together they presented a total of $2434 to Acting Operations Manager Cancer Services, Kate Everitt

15.01.2022 After making hundreds of gorgeous knitted goods to raise money for the cancer centre, Karen Denham and her sister-in-law Nerilee Thompson have put away their knitting needles. With the help of many in the Holbrook community where Mrs Denham worked, the pair also known as Mawson's Vision, successfully raised more than $11,500 over four years. Their best seller during that period was this cute knitted rabbit with a full set of clothing.... To read the full story, click on the link in the comments section below

15.01.2022 Terry's Big Bearded Ball Drop has already raised almost $35,000! The hope is to make it to $200,000. https://www.abc.net.au//albury-wodonga-regional-c/12610206

15.01.2022 As it was their first Christmas without their mum, Margaret, the Liston family decided that in lieu of presents, they would donate to a cause close to their hearts. The family collected $650 to donate to the Trust Fund. "We know that every little bit helps to enable the cancer centre to continue the wonderful service that it provides to the people of this community," Carmel McNamara (nee Liston) said.... Margaret first battled breast cancer in 2007, just before she turned 80, and underwent a double mastectomy. She remained cancer free until in 2017, she was told that it had metastasized into her bones. She passed away last year, just two days before her 92nd birthday. Her son, Philip, was also diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017 and died the following year. Pictured is Margaret with her children, Paul, Anthony, Catherine, Philip, Geraldine, Stephen and Carmel, who are telling cancer what they think of it.

15.01.2022 THANKS TO YOU The Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund was last week proud to announce a record investment in our local cancer services for the 2019-2020 financial year. This included:... $340,000 in new equipment; $244,000 in the Wellness Centre; $105,000 in cancer research; and, $71,000 in staff training and education. This would not be possible without your generous donations. The Trust was also proud to host Terry Greaves, from Terry's Big Bearded Ball Drop, and Albury Wodonga Health plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr Queenie Chan at our annual general meeting. They are pictured with Trust Chair Michelle Hensel and manager Kristy McMahon. For a copy of our 2019-2020 Annual Report, visit www.awcancertrust.org.au

13.01.2022 As a hairdresser, Sarah Pigdon is used to making people feel fabulous by waxing, filing and crafting salon perfect styles. But this month the owner of Yarrawonga salon, Beyond the Fringe Yarrawonga hair & skin, decided to spread goodwill of a different kind by launching a fundraiser for the cancer centre. Sarah and her best friend, Lauren Gleeson, have set a goal to raise $10,000 to shave their heads by New Year’s Eve.... The fundraiser has been inspired by Lauren’s mum, Debbie Cox, who has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. I wanted to lift Lauren’s spirits and give her something to be positive about while her mum undergoes treatment, she said. It has helped her so much, and also shows everyone what the family, and many local families, go through following a cancer diagnosis. Debbie, 62, who has undergone chemotherapy and is now receiving immunotherapy through the cancer centre’s research unit, said the facility was just "amazing". The doctors and nurses are amazing, and everyone there is just lovely and caring," she said. If I had a million bucks I’d give it to the cancer centre. I really would. The fundraiser includes a raffle and live auctions, with further details available on the Beyond the Fringe Facebook page. Pictured is Sarah with her friend, Lauren, as well as Debbie with her nine-year-old granddaughter, Mena, who decided to show her support by shaving her head. 08.01.2022 Our usually clean shaven Trust Fund board member, David Baker, has been drawing plenty of attention lately for his new bearded look. While his extra facial hair has received somewhat of a mixed reaction, it all has been for a good cause as part of Terry's Big Bearded Ball Drop. David, a sales manager at Albury's Baker Motors, is one of 81 Bearded Ambassadors aiming to raise $200,000 for the cancer centre.... To date, almost $148,000 has been raised, with donations closing at midday this Friday. Every $20 donation made receives an entry into the $10,000 ball drop to be held at Benalla on Saturday, November 21. While Mr Baker has enjoyed being a part of the campaign, he said he is looking forward to shaving again soon. "Some say leave it on, and plenty say get rid of it when the campaign's finished," he said. "So it's countdown until November 21." Anyone wishing to support Mr Baker or the ball drop campaign, please click on the link in the comments section below

08.01.2022 More Bearded Ambassadors are needed to help Terry's Big Bearded Ball Drop achieve its fundraising target of $200,000. 07.01.2022 Cancer patients have been assured it is safe to continue receiving medical treatment during COVID-19. Albury Wodonga Health Director of Cancer Services, Dr Craig Underhill, is concerned many patients have delayed getting symptoms checked or are skipping routine appointments altogether because of the pandemic. There’s evidence from overseas that the issue during the pandemic is not just the coronavirus itself, but people putting off routine care and appointments, he said.... This has meant in a spike in cancer death rates and deaths from other illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes. We have some evidence in Victoria as well that there’s been a rapid fall off in the number of people diagnosed with cancer in 2020. Those cancers haven’t gone away. They will appear but the problem will be that people will present later in their illness and probably have a worse outcome. Dr Underhill said the cancer centre and other health services have implemented measures to ensure patients receive care safely.

06.01.2022 "I'm convinced it's the greatest asset that this city could have. If I ever get emotional about it, it's not about my problem, it's just about how good this place is ... and the lives it saves." - 2AY newsreader Paul "Macca" McSwiney in speaking about the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre. Macca opened up about his cancer battle for the first time on radio this week. Listen to the full interview by clicking the link below.

06.01.2022 Keep an eye out for the "donation dollar" bearing the message "give help to others" If you find one, you might like to pop it in one of our donation boxes around town, including at Healthfocus Physiotherapy and Vision Screenprinting.

04.01.2022 Twelve months ago, Judy Hofmeyer would walk into her massage appointment ready to burst out in tears. But just 30 minutes in the hands of therapist, Katrina Crawford, would help melt away some of the pain and stress that came with having breast cancer . Massage really has helped with my emotional stability, Judy said.... Sometimes I came in here and I would almost be crying. Katrina was a really great help because while you’re having your massage, you’re chatting about nothing and you’re not thinking about cancer. It just helps relax your body and mind, and you feel so much better when you walk out. Judy is just one patient taking advantage of a new voucher system offered by the Wellness Centre to ensure patients can still access vital wellbeing services during COVID-19. Funded by the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund, the vouchers provide patients and carers with subsidised visits to selected health providers including oncology massage and physiotherapy, in the community. While its doors maybe closed, the Wellness Centre is very much open and we saw this as a way to reach out to patients and carers in the community when we can’t do it in the building, Wellness Centre Coordinator Teighan Govett said. Providers so far include Crawford Massage Therapies and Healthfocus Physiotherapy, with plans to expand in the future. For further information about the vouchers, contact the Wellness Centre on (02) 6064 1562 or email [email protected] Pictured from left to right is Teighan, Katrina and Judy.

03.01.2022 It's four years today that the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre first opened its doors to patients. Thousands of people in our region have been grateful to have this world-class facility so close to home, including patient Mark Haley. "(The centre is) an amazing facility and stacked with the most awesome people," he said.... "I would not be here if not for the wonderful care, support and treatment I was very fortunate to receive."
