25.01.2022 Congratulations to Mark on his latest publication! An examination of humananimal interactions in zoos from an ethical perspective, and both their benefits and the potential risks to both human & animal participants, have a read at: https://doi.org/10.3390/ani10112037

24.01.2022 Zoo keepers, head keepers, volunteers, and management staff working with all big cats, including Tigers, Lions, Jaguar, Leopard, Snow Leopard - anything Panthera - please consider taking the time to have your say in Kat Tuite's Big Cat Enrichment Survey, part of her PhD studies Your insights can help the development of enrichment practices to support positive welfare for all! The survey is available at the link below: https://bit.ly/2XlRZbU

23.01.2022 Meet Nacho Dog. Megans small but mighty boss, he was passionate about social distancing long before it became a thing.

23.01.2022 Neville, Maddy's closest coworker. Classic office day-dreamer and yogi. Often found window gazing when he should be working. Encourages self care such as stretching and naps. Will high-5 you at the end of a long day

22.01.2022 Currently sharing an office space with Carmen (and not too stressed at all about social distancing), Harry is the annoying coworker who is always looking over your shoulder or popping up over the partition to see what youre doing. Not very bright. Steals all your good ideas. Gets away with it because hes cute.

22.01.2022 If you're interested in penguins, zoo animal welfare, and/or human-animal interactions, look no further than Sam's most recently published paper 'Effect of Covering a Visitor Viewing Area Window on the Behaviour of Zoo-Housed Little Penguins (Eudyptula minor)' - currently available at https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/10/7/1224!

21.01.2022 Leigh's micro micro manager Molly. Great at delegating, disappears for hours but always knows where you are. Will disrupt the whole workplace until you make yourself available to accompany her on her late morning nap.

21.01.2022 Monday morning vibes are brought to you by Sam's coworkers, Myiah and Bolt, who are always sleeping on the job!

20.01.2022 On Tuesday, we said a socially distanced goodbye to our class clown Jeremy on his last official day at the Animal Welfare Science Centre! Despite our best efforts, although we almost had him trained to close his door during sales calls, he remained entirely undomesticated & has had to be released. All jokes aside, we want to send Jeremy all our thanks for keeping office morale high with constant entertainment and laughs, for supporting us in every way he could & for always making us feel at ease. Jeremy, we're going to miss you so much- the office will be dull without you!

20.01.2022 Laura's new co-worker Murphy has SO much work on his plate. Whats on your plate? Hell help! He needs to nap on the sofa. He needs to nap on the floor. He needs to nap on each of the 8 beds he's accumulated just to show he's grateful for them all. He needs to check the horses. He needs to sniff the chickens. He needs to lick the cat. It's tiring being so busy all the time. He needs another nap but hell take a cow to bed to show he still supports your work. #petsofAWSSUM

20.01.2022 With AWSSUM members now separated from each other in their own home offices, we are adapting to working with a plethora of new colleagues. Stay tuned all this week as we introduce you to the #petsofAWSSUM. This new virtual staff pinboard shows the ID photos of some the co-workers you'll be meeting!

19.01.2022 Congratulations to our five Honours students, undertaking their projects through the Animal Welfare Science Centre - Amy, Sheridan, Grace, Chris & Aashna. After a lot of hard work, they presented their research project proposals today!

19.01.2022 You know the co-workers were talking about. The sun comes out on the first warm day of spring and theyre out of the office like a shot and nowhere to be seen for the rest of the day until a photo of them pops up on Facebook, drinks in hand, grin on their faces in the sunshine. Theyre asleep by 4pm. On a Tuesday. You finish off your joint presentation alone.

08.01.2022 Max's George is very determined to take charge of the "mouse" in the home office, but apparently operates under different work ethics to Max's other AWSSUM colleagues....

06.01.2022 First up, meet Horizon - Bels newly self-appointed manager. Always unimpressed with the speed at which Belinda responds to her "requests".

06.01.2022 Cancelled. UFAW conference Recent advances in animal welfare science VII, Birmingham, UK 1st July 2020 Given the unprecedented global situation and concerns r...egarding the COVID-19 virus, and after careful consultation regarding the health and safety of everyone involved, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the upcoming UFAW conference Recent advances in animal welfare science VII on 1st July. Delegates who have registered for the meeting will be contacted by email. Those who have paid can choose to have their 63 registration fee refunded. Alternatively delegates can use their registration fee as 70 credit against the registration fee for the 2021 UFAW Symposium to be held in Edinburgh on 29-30 July or they can choose to turn their fee into a donation to support UFAW's charitable activities in these uncertain times. We still hope to be able to offer some of the planned conference content and are thinking how best we might achieve this eg as recorded presentations. Further details will follow in due course. For those of you who were also planning on attending the Fifth Annual Meeting of the AWRN, due to take place on following the UFAW meeting on the 2nd-3rd July 2020 in Birmingham, please note that this meeting is also cancelled. UFAW - and the AWRN - are very disappointed that we are unable to hold these events, especially as for the first time we were running them alongside each other, but we are confident its the right decision based on the information we have today. Thank you for your understanding and best wishes to all of you.

04.01.2022 You are invited to hear our very own Madeleine Woodruff's PhD confirmation seminar over Zoom, next Friday October 30th at 11am AEDT. Maddy's PhD title is: 'How can best practice become normal practice? Using tail docking in sheep as an example.' Docking sheep tails is routine practice in Australia, primarily for the prevention of flystrike. Recent Australian research has demonstrated a proportion of farmers are docking sheep tails shorter than the recommended length (coverin...g the vulva; three coccygeal joints). This is a relevant welfare issue as research links short tails with negative health, welfare and production consequences. Previous research has identified farmer factors associated with short tail docking, including knowledge of the recommended length and importance placed on shearing ease. This project aims to develop, implement and evaluate a cognitive-behavioural intervention involving Victorian sheep producers to promote docking tails at the recommended length. Zoom details: 11.00am12.00pm AEST Friday 30 October Zoom ID: 87059476140, Password: 773789

04.01.2022 Bel's Belezabub. That guy who always looks busy but never seems to get anything done, if anything he makes more work for everyone else

04.01.2022 Meet Sammy's colleague Lotti. She cannot work independently and frequently interrupts meetings. However, she always looks presentable and cute, and will clear her schedule to provide a hug and emotional support to colleagues. A valuable asset to the company.

04.01.2022 You are invited to hear Maria present her PhD Completion Seminar on August 11th from 1pm - 2pm AEST. Maria's PhD explores the use of computer vision techniques as non-invasive tools to monitor parameters related to the well-being and productive performance of cattle & pigs!

03.01.2022 Its been a tough few months apart, and weve missed the friendship and support of seeing each other in the office. Working from home can be a tough gig, pandemic or no! To try and spread some of the love weve been missing in our office to our members far and wide, our wonderful committee were recently awarded a grant from the Universitys Graduate Students Association to put towards providing our members with corona care packs. Each box was filled with treats chosen espec...ially for each member, and its been great seeing everyones reactions as their surprises arrive! This is a pretty special gesture- even our WFH colleagues want a piece of the action! Thank you so much to the GSA for helping us out with this idea, and Personally Picked for providing a service we loved to use!!! We cant wait to be together again- but until then, youll find us munching on snacks, relaxing with heat packs and sipping on Rosé

03.01.2022 Our gorgeous friend Lightie is available for adoption through Seeing Eye Dogs Australia.
