13.01.2022 Importers and the deferred GST scheme If youre a GST-registered importer, deferring GST can be a helpful way to manage your cash flow in the COVID-19 environment. Instead of paying GST on your taxable imports up front, you can defer payment until youve lodged your first activity statement after the goods are imported. To access the deferred GST scheme, you (or your registered tax or BAS agent) need to: complete and lodge your Application for approval to defer GST ...on imported goods form lodge your activity statements monthly (if you are currently lodging quarterly, we will change this (on your behalf) to monthly once we receive and approve your application). This means that if you apply in May or June your application will be backdated to take effect from 1 April 2020. You will need to start lodging your monthly activity statements online. This includes, your statements for April, May and June 2020. Deferment of payment for GST imports can only take effect after your application has been successfully processed. Next step: Lodge your application for Deferred GST, or talk to us at Ax3, [email protected] on how you can apply.

10.01.2022 80 cent per hour work -from-home deduction method extended. Taxpayers continuing to work from home in the new year will be allowed to continue using the simplified working-from-home deduction method following a third extension by the ATO. The 80 per hour shortcut method, introduced in April 2020 in response to COVID-19, will now be in place until 30 June 2021. This is the third time the Tax Office has chosen to extend the shortcut method after it was first due to expire at t...he end of the last financial year, then September 2020, and more recently, at the end of December 2020. Conversely, the ATO’s updated Practical Compliance Guideline 2020/3 no longer states whether further consideration will be given to extending the latest end date. The new extension comes as NSW continues to contain an outbreak of COVID-19 infections that began on the Northern Beaches a week before Christmas. Victoria has since recorded new community transmission cases, with the state government now moving to push back plans for workers to return to the office from next Monday to a week later. The temporary shortcut method will continue to be supplementary to the 52 fixed-rate method and the actual cost method of calculating running expenses, with taxpayers able to choose the appropriate method for their circumstances. Have a talk to our tax experts at Ax3 to get the maximum deductions for your tax return each year, especially for all the COVID-19 tax incentives. 03.01.2022 The $150,000 instant asset tax write-off: Does it apply to cars? There has been a lot of confusion of the $150,000 instant asset write-off tax incentive introduced by the Federal Government, especially in relation to cars. The scheme scheduled to run from 12 March 2020 to 30 June 2020, the close of this financial year and the threshold amount for each asset is $150,000 (up from $30,000). However, only applies to certain types of motor vehicles. In most cases, the limit that... can be claimed as a whole amount for an instant asset write-off for a motor vehicle in this financial year is in fact $57,581 excluding GST, well short of the $150,000 headline number, as the luxury car limit still applies to motor vehicles. New and used motor vehicles designed to carry a load of less than one tonne and fewer than nine passengers (that is, regular passenger cars, SUVs and utes) subject to business use, may be able to claim an immediate deduction where the cost is less than $57,581 excluding GST. Previously the limit of a motor vehicle under the instant asset write-off scheme was $30,000 excluding GST. However, certain vehicles may be eligible to claim an immediate deduction of up to $150,000. Some utes which cost in excess of $60,000, and US-style pick-ups which cost from $80,000 to $150,000, could be eligible for an immediate tax deduction. With both cases, youll still have to consider the percentage of business use and FBT. So before going out and buying a $150,000 motor vehicle, thinking it is fully tax deductable, please have a chat to us, [email protected] Please note this information is general in nature and should not be used as a substitute for your own professional advice.
