25.01.2022 Over the last 6 week Shania has been working on building more stability of movement into her climbing, she is definitely looking more confident on the wall with a wider range of movements that she is in control of. - She also added an average of 1.85kg improvement in finger strength in our peak load tests across a variety of elbow and shoulder positions. Awesome work Shania good luck at States! - The next boulder stronger program starting n...ext week is sold out, to join the waitlist for the next one follow the link in the bio. - - - - - #venga #climbingcoaching #climbingclass #boulderbetter #portsideboulders #coach #boulderingisbetter #coffee #freo #perth #perthfitfam #southfreo #klettern #trainingforclimbing #movement. 25.01.2022 Sometimes you can find beta that suits you better than the intended beta, this is great for performance aspects of climbing or just getting it done. - A skilled climber will make time for practice too, Lenny ate this climb for breakfast so we challenged him to climb it without matching, something simple to get the brain working in different ways. #axiscoaching

24.01.2022 Control The Finish Position. - On moves to terrible holds we need to focus on what is supporting us, the hand and feet that we aren't moving. - For Example, the move to the blocked hold near the top of the climb, I need to focus on how my left hand is holding me as well as the left foot keeping tension throughout the move so my hips don't drop down forcing my right hand to catch to much bodyweight as I grab the blocked hold.... - In a perfect world I probably would of set myself up better so I didn't swing out from the wall when I grabbed the hold as well. #axiscoaching - - - - - - - - - #venga #climbingcoaching #climbingclass #boulderbetter #coach #boulderingisbetter #freo #perth #perthfitfam #southfreo #klettern #trainingforclimbing #movement #bouldering #boulder #training See more

24.01.2022 Awesome turn out on Saturday for the shoulder health clinic @portsideboulders_osbornepark - Thanks to everyone that came along and thanks to @ballet_barbells_debbi and @formotionphysio for providing your expertise. - What’s the next workshop we should run? Maybe deadlift?

23.01.2022 Something I pay close attention to when working with new athletes is their language. - Language is like a door. - I can’t: that doors locked... I haven’t yet: doors open I did: gone through the door - The simple changing of language habits makes a huge difference in opportunities for progress. - Here’s Tessa crushing this green v4 in Tuesday’s Boulder Stronger program, the only thing we changed was her language and being deliberate and she crushed 2 projects! The potential was there it just needed unlocking, what a beast! @portsideboulders_oconnor #axiscoaching - - - - #bouldering #climbing #girlswhoclimb #boulderingmakesmehappy #boulderingisbetter See more

23.01.2022 Something to consider before states this weekend. - Deload, don’t rest. Focus this week on keeping some intensity in your training, don’t rest the whole week. We need to keep up the try hard and climb well without getting fatigued. No 3 hour sessions but also not 4 days off. - Get your kit together, pack a bag with everything you will need for states from tape and scissors to shoes and chalk. Snacks are always a good idea too. Want a list? Message me.... - Eat, hydrate and sleep well, to maximise the work you have been doing, drive extra effort into recovery, boost that super compensation. - Finalise your warm up, know exactly how to warm up on the day will reduce stress and improve performance with having the confidence in how warm you will be. 20.01.2022 A common example is feet slipping off volumes when swapping feet or when moving between volumes, feet can placed accurately but just don't seem to stick, learning to seamlessly transition weight between feet in a paste on paste off style will keep you on tension and balance better. COG, Your centre of gravity is your belly button, if this is over or behind a foot then your bodyweight will almost always be solely in that foot, reaching out with a foot to the... next hold without shifting your weight towards the foot you are placing will make it very difficult to load the foot you are moving to or committing to the next footer. Once a foot is placed bringing your belly button back between your feet will start to balance the load between your feet, want to really load the foot you have just moved? shift your belly button over or past that foot. - A less common example is a hand foot match, if you keep you COG even between the foot you are not moving and the hand you want to match your foot to its going to be harder than if you shift your COG over the foot you aren't moving. Even better if you can twist the foot you aren't moving to point towards the hand/foot match hold, it will give you much more room. - Feet are obvious, but is your COG being equally supported between both hands as well? Are both hands working together or is 1 gripping on much harder than the other. In climbing COG works both up and down your body, like 2 triangles, one has 1 point at your COG and one at each foot, the other at your COG and goes to each hand. - Tip, play with your hips, shift them left and right and feel your weight shift, try it on different footers and different positions. - - - - #venga #climbingcoaching #climbingclass #boulderbetter #portsideboulders #coach #boulderingisbetter #coffee #freo #perth #perthfitfam #southfreo #klettern #trainingforclimbing #movement. 17.01.2022 We've all heard it, "climb with your arms straight" but is this really the right cue? - We often use the cue climb with your arms straight during coaching but the purpose is not the typical one, for me climbing with arms straight or more importantly reaching the next hold with a straight arm is primarily for teach reach distance, a lot of people over power moves because they don't understand how long their arm actually is, practicing reaching the next hold w...ith arm straight is a good way to gauge your reach vs the distance. - There are definitely moves out there that are better to bend your arm and pull hard, like deep lock offs or dyno's, it will be much safer for your shoulders if you use your arm as a shock absorber rather than relying on the connective tissue to catch you in a dyno. - Its can be good for people who can't relax or to learn to push with your feet better but it really is move specific, sometimes pull as hard as you can and others relax out to straight arm, its most beneficial to have the understanding how to use both then you can choose. - - - - #venga #climbingcoaching #climbingclass #boulderbetter #coach #boulderingisbetter #freo #perth #perthfitfam #southfreo #klettern #trainingforclimbing #movement #bouldering #boulder #training See more

16.01.2022 A common mistake people make with step coordinations is that they focus on the hand hold too early. - Look at the next hand hold and plan where you want your body to be to be able to hold it then watch your feet until you hit the final footer, looking at the handhold too early can cause a few things: - loss of balance - under commitment too slow or inaccuracy... - over commitment, to much pace makes it hard to stop - missing a footer then ending up missing some skin Aim your body then watch the feet for as long as you can.

15.01.2022 @stiletto_squeak and San both standing like super hero’s after crushing their retest at the end of their 6 week custom program. - San wanted 1 pull and and ended up casually pulling 4 and squeak went from 33mm min edge hangs down to 18mm, always nice to make those smaller holds feel juggier.

15.01.2022 A couple of tips for skin care, things to do after climbing and also focuses you can have while climbing to preserve you skin too.

11.01.2022 Something About Nothing. - As climbers we spend much of our time talking about this hold or that hold when only a very small % of our body uses them, holds are essential to climbing but just as important is the space between them. - Route reading, Learning to plan our your hands is extremely useful, the next step is to plan out all feet, following that you should just about to be able to see the path and its time to plan where you are, your... body positions for each move. Go full Ondra lying on the full if it helps. - Momentum, Tension, Fluidity, these all come from how you are using the space between the holds. - Don't get hold hungry, hold hungry is just hurrying between the holds, we want to move to a position where we can most effectively use the next hold, not just where we can grab it. - - - - - #venga #climbingcoaching #climbingclass #boulderbetter #portsideboulders #coach #boulderingisbetter #coffee #freo #perth #perthfitfam #southfreo #klettern #trainingforclimbing #movement. 11.01.2022 One of the most under utilised lifts by climbers is the deadlift. - Full posterior chain engagement and one of the best ways to learn to try hard in a controlled environment. - 170kgx3.

11.01.2022 This boulder took me more attempts to repeat it after the first send then it did to do it it the first place. - A good way to ensure to understand movements is repeat every boulder that you do 3x or more, it’s a rule I’ve followed since I heard a rumour that in some gyms in japan it doesn’t count until you do it 3 times, while this info may be incorrect I think the principle is a great one. Can anyone confirm it? - There is so much to learn from the repetition, how much can y...ou actually relax, reduce over thinking and it’s another opportunity to climb well. #axiscoaching See more

09.01.2022 Training is a funny thing, we can spend so much time focusing on our strengths that weaknesses can get masked to a certain degree. - I have always focus on a singular hand position with my hang boarding, half crimp/chisel, why? Because I think it is the most versatile, the most useable out of Full Crimp, Half Crimp or Open Handed. - This tunnel vision built decent finger strength (+50kg for 10 seconds) but the holes left either side are hu...ge, open handed I can barely get my feet off the ground (10 second max hang time at bodyweight) and full crimp (10 second 12mm edge time at bodyweight) isn't fantastic either. - While Im using 2 very measurable forms of "strength", this is purely to highlight the gap, Yes, In our online programs we do use measurable statistics to build your profile but we also spend a lot of time working with how you move on the wall, this is why we don't believe in the one size fits all approach to training. Just measuring and programming based off of the measurable leaves too many gaps. - Measurable are important but so is movement quality. - We have 3 places left in our online training programs, if you would like 1 of these custom assessment spots PM us to book in your face to face assessment for a 6 or 12 week training program @portsideboulders_osbornepark or @portsideboulders See more

05.01.2022 Consistency is an essential part of training, a lot people think that this goes about as deep as every mon, wed, fri I need to climb. - There a few more aspects of consistency to consider: 1. Being consistent enough with a move or training type that you remember it when you next try it. A prime example is sticking to a training program too short or waiting too long between programs, you lose most of the gains you earned before you start the next program. 2. Being able to rep...eat climbs or lifts under different levels of fatigue. Can you still climb well near your limit when tired? 3. Recovery, do you consistently put effort into your recovery? @michaeldolinces took a while to get this problem in the first place, but here he is repeating it after projecting other climbs, I.e being able to consistently perform well under fatigue. #axiscoaching - - - - #bouldering #climbing #training #perth #perthwa #consistency #boulder #performance #climb @portsideboulders_osbornepark

04.01.2022 Practicing to #flash climbs is one of the best ways to challenge your adaptability, sometimes things don’t work the way that is planned, the tie hook at the start threw me then so did the knee bar that didn’t fit. - The psychological challenge of being able to adapt and keep it together is always a fun one. #axiscoaching

04.01.2022 I get a lot of questions about shoes, so here's a few things you should consider. - What shoes do you recommend I get? The one that fits your foot, the tightness of that shoe depends on what you feel you need but if there is an air bubble in the heel, they probably don't fit. Different brands and models have different attributes like heel volume, shoe width or toe box volume. - Why I don't choose the softest shoe on the market, the main rea...son is milage, soft shoes will wear out faster, with todays textured walls and sandpaper like slopers these shoes will turn into toes socks in no time, sensitivity in them is great if you have the toe strength to hold on but for me these are more of a competition or performance shoe, not so much a practice one unless you have the money to buy a new pair every month. - Flats vs Aggressive? Its a bit of a much of a muchness whats more important is how you use them, flats are often better for slab and aggressive can be better for overhang but in gyms you can climb everything in either shoe, whats more important is the rubber and your understanding of how to use a shoe. - Tight VS Comfortable? Tight shoes are tight because the tension held by the shoe around your foot creates a more stable, stronger foot, but comfortable shoes work well to you just have to work a bit harder to utilise them. How much pain you enjoy is up to you. - If this raises more questions then it answers, shoot me a message and we will answer what we can. See more
