25.01.2022 ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Brandon is one of our favourites here at Axis Performance - so much so we gave him a job! If you know Brandon Ware you know that he is one of the most resilient humans you will meet ... While at the top of his craft & performing in a top-level stage show the unthinkable happened. A ruptured ACL on opening night, on stage. He hasn’t danced since. The injury happened in July 2017. Since then he has had 6 major knee surgeries including 3 ACL reconstructions. But he hasn’t let that stop him, dedicating himself to a return to sport. 10 Months into a fairly uninterrupted rehabilitation process he is firing on all cylinders and going from strength to strength. While he still has a little ways to go to get back on stage, his perseverance and dedication will certainly take him a long way! No Lockdowns or Gym Closures have stopped him continuing his progress. Like all good athletes, he has found a way! P.S If you want to see what a Dancer looks like at the top of their game swipe right #aclrecovery #aclrehab #axisperformance

24.01.2022 Exercise for mental health during a lockdown with @dan.atkinson_aep Exercise is something we can control, a stable part of our day or week, to benefit our mental and physical health, and can be done pretty much anywhere. Exercise can help reduce the incidence of depression and improve mood with 60 minutes of activity per week. For physical and mental health benefits and managing a range of chronic health conditions, we aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity ...per week with 2x resistance sessions as per the National Physical Activity Guidelines. What would a suitable exercise program look like? Some examples though not limited to: walking, running, home obstacle course, an impulse dance party for your pet, fitness app, bodyweight program, zoom yoga class, or an old aerobics DVD. We all have to start somewhere so finding an amount of time you can commit to and keep consistent throughout the week is ideal. Then over time with consistency, increase in confidence, and exercise tolerance you may be reaching the guidelines sooner than you think. If you are wondering what is best, we certainly suggest picking something that suits you. By this we mean it has meaning to you - something you will enjoy. If you need a hand finding your starting point or reengaging in exercise an exercise physiologist is a great person to work with to help your movement journey and is available to help you through Telehealth services. You can do it from the comfort of your own home! Also, if you're needing further assistance with your mental health please reach out to friends and family or seek assistance through medical health professionals. Please stay safe, follow the restrictions for your area, and enjoy the way you move! See more

23.01.2022 WANT TO GET MORE FROM YOUR BLOCK RUN? TIPS FROM @lphealthperformance The same block doesn't have to be run the same way every day, the scenery might not change but your workout can! If you've been running throughout the lockdown period and your progress has stalled, or you're just looking for something different, here's three alternatives to doing the same run at the same pace every time you go out... 1) Try some intervals, go for the usual time or distance you run but change up the intensity on a particular timed interval. For example: fartlek training, jog for 30-60seconds, run for 30-60 seconds, then walk for 30-60 seconds and repeat. You might even do some set intervals, where you run for 30seconds, slow to a jog for 30seconds and repeat for a block of 5-10 minutes, then walk for 3-5 minutes and repeat another 5-10 minute block of 30:30. 2) Hills will increase the intensity of your run, try taking a few different streets within your 5km radius that take you up and down hill. Or, find the steepest hill in your area, run to up it for 15-30seconds, walk back down and rest for 60-120 seconds, then repeat x 10 times. 3) Just change up the tempo. By altering the pace of your run to make it more or less intense you will find yourself running different distances. Instead of running 5km in 20minutes every second day, try one day where you run more than 5km in a slower time (5-6minutes per km, compared to your usual 4minutes per km), or fewer kms in a faster time (2-3km at 4 minutes per km). 21.01.2022 RECOVERY PSA! Since reopening we have been inundated with enquiries regarding our recovery services so we thought we would jump on here to clarify exactly what is happening with our Recovery Zone. The use of spas, ice baths, saunas and steamed rooms is estimated to be included in stage 3 of the Victorian Government restrictions. The department of Health & the Victorian Government have confirmed that a date for stage 3 is not yet confirmed and we are still in stage... 2 where all of the services mentioned above are strictly prohibited. As there seemed to be a grey area for the sports recovery, fitness, allied health and sports development industries regarding what types of services were permitted to reopen when gyms reopened, we sought clarification directly from the Department of Health as well as Business Victoria and received confirmation that there is absolutely no exception for businesses offering these types of recovery services. To reiterate, outside of personal use within your own home- the use of spas, ice baths, saunas and steam rooms is currently and strictly prohibited throughout Victoria. As these types of services make up the bulk of our recovery zone, recovery is currently unavailable at Axis Performance. The Recovery Zone and all of its services will remain closed until all of our recovery services are permitted to reopen with the expectation of that being in stage 3 (hopefully). If you are a business and have any further questions or enquiries regarding the use of recovery services we encourage you to please contact the Department of Health directly as they communicate their restrictions very clearly and firmly. If you as a recovery user have any questions regarding Axis Performance and any of our services please drop us an email to [email protected] Please continue to stay safe, healthy and wash your hands See more

20.01.2022 CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB Acceleration and Max Velocity are two prized attributes when developing an athlete for any field or court-based sport. The ability to ACCELERATE away from an opponent or to the ball, as well as MAINTAIN & REACH Max speed is imperative to positive performances. Should be treating these field & court-based athletes like track sprinters or by implementing strategies to ensure that their postures are more relatable to the demands of their cho...sen sport. The Image on the Left is following a "Fall & Lean" into the sprint. As the initial posture was upright this has carried over into the Sprint Posture. Even though this posture is a more traditional "sprint" posture (extension through trunk, less aggressive shin angle) it is ineffective for a sudden change of direction or the ability to rotate through the trunk. The image on the right however is following a "squatted" lead in posture which has translated to a much more aggressive shin angle, a lowering of the centre of mass & a slightly more angled torso than in the previously mentioned image. This posture allows for a much more effective change of direction in a chaotic environment due to the better leverage, as well as the flexibility (due to the posture) to rotate the trunk, extend to evade opponents, or deaccelerate - both rapidly & effectively. Implementing one of these sprint drills over the other isn't a matter of right or wrong - but more so the right one for the desired outcome!

19.01.2022 When we say Luke is strong. We mean Strong. As a 16 Year Old, he was squatting over 100kg with ease and topped out the Trap Bar Deadlift at 180kg! This baseline of strength has placed Luke in good stead during his rehab from a traumatic bilateral lower limb fracture following a Motocross accident!... Luke’s rehab hasn’t missed a beat and amazingly has had only minor complication! Here we have Luke Completing Kickstand Goblet Squat Step up with Knee Drive Soleus Calf Raise IsoHold While Luke is smashing his rehab at the moment - we cannot wait to see him back in the gym training the house down!

18.01.2022 Improving your Jump on the Court - Jake Heyen ... Are you working hard to improve your vertical jump, but feel like it isn’t carrying over to the court? There are many factors that influence your ability to make substantial on-court vertical jump improvements. There are also a number of constraints you face in the game of basketball that may not allow you to jump as high as you possibly can such as: You rarely get a complete, unaltered, and uninterrupted approach during a game to fully maximise your vertical jump. You rarely are jumping from a completely balanced position You rarely have an adequate safe landing zone which can psychologically affect how much effort you put into your jump. You are constantly jumping from a different position and approaching from a different angle. So how can you transfer the vertical jump improvements you make training show on the court? Well, the simplest way is just to practice. Traditional vertical jump training is very controlled and comfortable (e.g., double leg hurdle jumps, single leg bounding, strength training). You need to get uncomfortable and practice jumping from an array of different approaches and conditions. Double leg jump with Left à Right approach. Double leg jump with Right à Left approach Single leg left. Single leg right Short approach vs long approach. Off a drop step, off a jump stop, off a spin, off a crossover step, from a defensive slide. Build the capacity to jump higher through structured and progressed vertical jump training, and then take the reins off and get out on a court and practice jumping/dunking from game-like movement situations. Jumping is a skill, just like your jump shot. You’ve got to get those reps in

17.01.2022 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Large & In Charge Why is standing important for SCI Populations?... Josh Evans comes into Axis Performance two times a week to work on a range of factors to help him become more independent, stronger and healthy While Josh can’t stand unassisted, the assisted standing you see in these images allows him to maintain lower limb muscle mass, improve trunk control (which can improve his unassisted sitting), decrease the chance of other health issues (blood pressure, dysreflexia), controls his spasms and as a facilitator to unassisted standing. Josh is going from strength to strength with his standing! He currently needs less tension on the belt (provides hip extension), less upper limb support, increase in standing duration and has the ability to control pelvic movement in standing (this is a biggie!) We are all super excited to see his progress and get stuck into the next stage of his journey!

10.01.2022 Improving your jump Jumping and its performance in sports can be the difference between a game-winning dunk or getting rejected at the rim. The difference between being out marked in a one-on-one contest. Or the difference between blocking a spike at the net or that volleyball being smashed right past you. But how do you determine what avenue you take to ensure that your jump performance improves?... The Video (and relating image) on the left-hand side shows a traditional squat jump. A squat jump is a type of jump in which the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) has a limited influence on jump performance and is driven by the ability to produce maximum force. This example also has no drive from the upper limb and its subsequent upwards momentum. However, the video (and relating image) on the right-hand side show a False Drop-Counter movement jump (CMJ). The rapid de-acceleration and forceful ground contact allow for effective use of the SSC (a reflex in which takes a rapidly stretched muscle-tendon unit to a contracted position). As we can see from the testing rests the False Drop-CMJ has a higher jump height, more power production, and a higher take-off velocity, all leading to an improved jump performance. What do we take out of this? Identifying where your weakness when jumping will allow you to determine what you need to work on. If you are able to squat 2x bodyweight but are slow in the take-off phase of the jump are more heavy squats going to improve your jump performance? Probably not - working on jumping technique, drills to improve your SSC function, and use the upper body to drive upward momentum will be your go-to. However, if you're able to quickly transition from the lowering phase to the take-off phase of the jump but lacking that jump height then working on maximum force production to complement great jump technique is going to help. Make sure that you are choosing the right tools for the job. A screwdriver isn't going to hammer in a nail

08.01.2022 ONE SLEEP TO GO!!! Are you up to speed with the most recent restrictions update? We had a feeling something like this may happen and weve planned accordingly. As nice as it would be for us to all crawl out from under our iso-rocks, it just never quite felt like opening up a range of big industries at once was going to lead to a positive covid related outcome. I mean, lets say we get up early on a Saturday morning and go to the gym, pop into the supermarket on the w...Continue reading

07.01.2022 What is the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist? (in Australia) We get asked this A LOT! Let us start with noting that the term nutritionist is not regulated. Therefore this title may be used by Dietitians, Nutrition scientists, nutrition graduates as well as anyone with very limited qualifications in Nutrition. Nutritionists are able to provide a range of nutrition services relating to nutrition, public health nutrition, community health and re...search. There is often a grey area about where to draw the line with regards to scope of practise given that the title can be so widely used even though the level of study can be dramatically variable. Dieticians are University qualified Professionals that have not only completed a bachelor in nutrition but further study that includes a Masters of Nutrition or Dietetics. The further study includes substantial clinician nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food services coursework and assessed professional practice. They also undertake ongoing edu action to ensure that they are the most up to date and credible source of nutrition information. They have the expertise to provide individual dietary counselling, medical nutritional therapy, group dietary therapy and food service management. Jade is our incredible Sports Nutritionist, Dietitian & Performance Coach. Jade works with individuals as well as teams and has an extensive background in delivering a combination of both nutrition, dietetics and performance coaching in elite sport. 07.01.2022 What on earth is an Exercise Physiologist? An Exercise Physiologist is an Allied Health Professional that specialises in the prescription of Clinical Exercise for the treatment of Chronic Disease or injury to restore optimal health and/or function. Thats a type of Physiotherapist, right?... No. While both are Allied health professionals and are able to excellently treat injuries, their approach and education have many similarities and many differences. Physiotherapists often have a very hands on approach and often include massage in treatment. Physiotherapy is the right choice for an acute injury in particular. An Exercise Physiologist does not include massage in treatment and if your injury or condition is greater than a few weeks old and would require exercises for rehabilitation, Exercise Physiology is the correct choice as they specialise in Exercise Therapy, not hands on therapy. In many cases, Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology are a great treatment combination for injuries and in particular those looking to return to sport and competition. Physiotherapists will first restore basic function, reduce pain and improve range of motion. The Exercise Physiologist will then continue the treatment with a gym based exercise program to improve strength and optimal function. If you have a Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist that work together to treat you, you are absolutely in great hands! What other conditions are EPs able to treat? Pathology domains covered by the services of Exercise Physiologists also include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory/ pulmonary and mental health, and any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the clients clinical status. To book an Exercise Physiology consultation with Rod or Dan, you can do so via our website or by emailing an enquiry to [email protected] #axis #exercisephysiology #injuryrehab #axisperformance @ Axis Performance See more

06.01.2022 R U OK and World Suicide Prevention Day. Sometimes talking about, struggles, emotions and feelings can be uncomfortable or unnatural to usual dialogue with some people and thats fine. These chats arent always perfect and thats ok too, you dont have to have all the answers. Connecting, showing that you care and that someone feels listened to are so valuable. From the experiences that Ive had, I have not regretted any interaction I have had with checking in with someone.... R U OK day reminds us that having open conversations with people that are displaying different, behaviors, not their usually selves or may be further withdrawn than normal is important and can be done any day of the year. Here are some things to consider before reaching out to someone: Am I in a good headspace? Am I in a position to listen openly and non-judgmentally? And have I picked a private setting that the person and I feel comfortable chatting? 1. Reaching out R U OK? How have you been feeling? Are you ok? What have you been up to lately? I have noticed that you havent been your upbeat self lately, is everything ok? 2. Listen Acknowledge that their concerns are tough for them. Be prepared to sit in some silence, the person may need to think, find it difficult to talk about certain parts of their story or be conflicted on what they are ready to share. Be patient, allow then to answer or speak when ready. 3. Encourage action How would you like me to assist you? If someone has been feeling this way for longer than 2 weeks suggesting seeing or getting in touch with a health care professional. 4. Check in This could be a reminder in your phone for a couple of weeks down the track, or sooner if you feel it is more urgent to do so. For more detail visit RUOK.org, if you are unsure on what to do if the person mentions self-harm suicide visit Lifeline.org.au or call lifelines 24/7 crisis/support line on 13 11 14. They have information and resources you can use for both before or during your conversation with the person. Also, if you feel someones life is in danger call 000. See more

04.01.2022 This was the moment that made it all worth it. We may have been planning for this for months BUT there were so many moving parts to make all of this work in this short amount of time thats its been physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. Not just for us as business owners either but for our entire team and Im sure for many, many of our members being tasked with making decisions quickly that will affect the upcoming weeks. We are so blown away that one o...f our members would ever send us this type of message. Speechless that they would have that big of a heart to reach out and offer their support like this. We just cant keep this to ourselves. This type of kindness, compassion and support needs to be shared so incase any of us have forgotten, we can remember that kindness has the ability to transform anything. Just WOW. We are in unbelievably trying times. Our Grandkids may never comprehend the gravity of the current situation across the globe. 2020 has been a real shit show. Every single person that we know of has been gravely affected by all of this and it would be completely fair to lose hope. Most of us are facing troubles that weve never faced and its unrelenting, exhausting, frustrating and may lead to us losing our faith in good and humanity. Please dont lose hope. Truly great people exist. Please remember that we are all affected by this and are doing the absolute best we can. Nobody can please everybody but it doesnt stop us from trying to ensure we can help as many people as possible. Please be kind to yourself and each other. Be a good human especially when it matters like in times like this. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Keep moving and look after yourself as best you can. Well see you online or on the other side of this! PS. Scroll across to find out who the real boss is PPS. thank you again to the incredible member that sent this message. You have no idea how truly and deeply appreciated it is. Take care everyone @ Axis Performance See more

03.01.2022 Have you ever wondered how you actually get more aerobically fit from training? with Coach Karla! When we hit those aerobic training zones (continuous or long interval steady-paced work or short high-intensity intervals with minimal rest breaks ), we are basically putting our body into stress, and just like our minds, our body doesnt like it and wants to avoid this stress from reoccurring . To do so, it develops and makes itself stronger and better equipped to manage th...at level of work again without that associated level of stress . How does it do this? Through adaptations at both the cardiovascular and muscle level! CARDIOVASCULAR: increased size of heart + decreased HR increased blood volume increased capillaries = increased oxygen transport to muscles MUSCLE: Increased ability to move fuel into the cells Increased storage of fuels Increased mitochondria (the place where aerobic energy is produced) = increased oxygen use and energy production by the muscles For several-24 hours after aerobic exercise, your body is unregulated with all of these adaptations going on (which is why rest and recovery are important but thats for another post!). With continued exposure to aerobic stress by completing consistent training, from days to weeks and months, your body will continue developing significant adaptions and will operate quite differently and much more effectively, hence why completing the same training starts feeling easier! So.. how do all of these things make training feel easier you ask? The cardiovascular adaptations allow MORE oxygen to be delivered to our hard-working muscles QUICKER!! The adaptations at the muscle site allow for oxygen to be utilized to PRODUCE ENERGY in GREATER AMOUNTS and more RAPIDLY!! Together, this means when you exercise at the same intensity, your body becomes able to produce more energy more quickly compared to before, meaning the body is under less metabolic stress and it doesnt feel as difficult to maintain that intensity!

01.01.2022 To everyone that has called, messaged, emailed, commented and DMd us (both Personally and at Axis), we just want to send you a big virtual hug! Thank you so much for your well wishes, your appreciation and for thinking of us! Our hearts are so full of gratitude, they could explode! Lockdown is a tough pill to swallow but it is absolutely the right move for the overall health and safety of the community. Our well-being is the most valuable commodity of them all. We genu...inely feel that every move that we have made in the last few days has absolutely been the right move for everyone involved and we are so grateful to our members that trust us to keep them moving forward during this time. Thank you! The sport & fitness industries are currently in dire straights. When you think of heavily impacted industries the first that come to mind are travel, hospitality and beauty. We are all heavily impacted either personally, professionally, emotionally or financially and we arent about to play the victim here... but please, just as you may leave a credit with your travel agent, support hospitality by buying take away or buy products from your beauty therapist, please check in on your mates in sport and fitness too. Moving online or buying take away doesnt help a business grow, it just gives them a better chance to keep afloat. Check on your mates that are gym owners, coaches, fitness instructors and personal Trainers. If they are selling home programs or classes, have equipment for rent or products to purchase, please support them. If you cant support them with your business, please support them by sharing with your network. We could almost guarantee you that NOBODY is still moving to continue generating business and profit (besides marketing, pharmaceuticals and retail amarite?). Service based businesses are still moving because they feel responsible for others and want to do the right thing by their employees, members, clients, customers and community. If you have anyway of supporting them, just as you would your fave cafe, please do. Be safe & keep healthy everyone! Thank you, again!
