25.01.2022 Calling all teachers! Its time to study your tax deductions so you can get an A+ on your return. See our cheat sheet of what you can and cant claim: You can... claim working from home expenses. You cant claim the cost of gifts you buy for your students or any time you pay for their personal expenses (e.g. their lunch, excursion fees or school books). You can claim self-education expenses if the course relates directly to your current job. You cant claim a deduction if your study is only related in a general way to your job, or is designed to help you get a new one. You can claim a deduction when you drive between alternate workplaces for the same employer on the same day (e.g. from your school to another school to supervise an exam). Want to learn more? Check out www.ato.gov.au//Teacher-and-education-professionals---inc/

22.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Did we call you on your cell phone? Answer probably not Theres a new version of an old tax scam doing the rounds, but guess what scammers, were... exposing your secrets: - First, theyll call with an automated message saying theyre from the tax department saying youre being audited. - Youll be asked to select an option to be put through an operator (*cough scammer*) who says you owe a tax debt. - If you question the caller or hang up, youll likely receive a call back about 30 mins later which appears to come from an AFP phone number in Sydney. (For all you detectives, it looks like us. BUT ITS NOT, the scammers are just imitating our switchboard). - An AFP Federal Officer will then claim youll be arrested unless you pay the fine. DO NOT PAY! Remember - the AFP will NEVER request payment of fines or other monies over the phone. If you believe you or someone you know might be a scam victim, or have any information, you can report it through SCAMwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au) or your local police.
21.01.2022 SCAM WARNING With tax time over, be on high alert for phone calls demanding the payment of fake tax debts. Stay vigilant and warn your friends and family so... they dont get tricked. Be suspicious if someone contacts you demanding payment. Remember, we would never: Request the payment of a tax debt via prepaid gift cards (eg iTunes or Google Play) Ask for direct credit to be paid into a personal bank account or via an ATM Demand immediate payment, use aggressive behaviour, or threaten you with arrest or deportation. These are typical scammer tactics! If youre unsure about a call you receive, hang up immediately. Phone our scam hotline on 1800008540 to check if the call was legitimate or report the scam. 14.01.2022 If youre under JobKeeper, your boss can require you to change duties using a JobKeeper enabling direction, but there are rules. So, unless you normally do dome...stic work for your boss, you shouldnt be cleaning their house. Your boss can direct you to change duties, but the new duties must be: safe, including considering the nature and spread of coronavirus within the scope of your skills and ability and you must hold any licenses or qualifications required to do the job, and reasonably within the scope of your employers business operations. There are other rules, too. So, for example, your boss also needs to discuss the changes with you and give you at least three days written notice before giving you the direction, unless you agree to less. Also, your pay cant be reduced for doing different duties. If the duties attract a higher base rate, you need to be paid at that higher rate. 08.01.2022 We recently investigated a taxpayer who claimed $3,800 for transporting bulky tools to and from work. He said there was no secure area to store them at his work...place but when we talked to his employer, they told us that he had a company car and didnt actually need to transport the equipment Since the taxpayer didnt incur any expenses and knowingly misrepresented his circumstances, we knocked back the claim and applied a penalty. 07.01.2022 Theres no such thing as a standard deduction this is a myth! Fact: While you can claim up to $300 in work-related expenses without detailed receipts, ...its not an automatic entitlement. 06.01.2022 Myth: Its ok to be paid off the books. Fact. It really isnt. If youre being paid under the table (also known as cash-in-hand pay), you likely arent meeting... your tax obligations or getting your super entitlements, and youre at risk of being underpaid your minimum pay rates. Myth: You dont get paid for opening/closing the business. Fact: Employees must be paid for all hours theyre required to work and this includes time spent opening or closing a business. For example, if an employee is required to be at work at 7.45am to prepare for an 8am store opening (like cleaning and counting the till), they need to be paid from 7.45am. Myth: Lengthy unpaid work trials are always ok thats how you get your foot in the door. Fact: Unpaid work trials are only ok for as long as needed to demonstrate the skills required for the job. Depending on the nature of the work, this could range from an hour to one shift and you should always be under direct supervision. Myth: You only need to get a pay slip if you ask for one. You need to be given a pay slip for every pay day. Its a legal requirement. We also recommend employees keep their own records of when they work. This can help you check youre being paid right and sort out any pay disputes. Use our tailored hospitality resources to check your minimum entitlements: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/fin/fast-food-restaurants-cafes
