25.01.2022 Wondering whether you should be paid while self-isolating after a coronavirus test? Some different options could be available, so as a starting point, it’s best... speak to your boss. Permanent employees can use accrued sick/carer’s leave if they’re sick or need to care for a family/household member who’s sick. Otherwise you can ask to work from home, if possible, or you can agree with your boss to use paid leave - like annual leave or long service leave. There could also be other options. 2 weeks' unpaid pandemic leave is available for employees covered by certain awards. Unpaid pandemic leave applies when you have received a direction from government or health authorities to self-isolate. We’ve got more info about pay and leave while self-isolating on our website: https://coronavirus.fairwork.gov.au//quarantine-self-isola

22.01.2022 SCAM ALERT With tax time in full swing, beware of myGov-themed SMS and email scams! These messages will often ask you to click on a link to verify your deta...ils, and may seem to be legitimate because they show in your ATO or myGov SMS message thread. Don’t click any links, and don’t provide the information requested. A genuine ATO or myGov message will never ask you to access online services via a hyperlink. 20.01.2022 Calling all teachers! It’s time to study your tax deductions so you can get an A+ on your return. See our cheat sheet of what you can and can’t claim: You can... claim working from home expenses. You can’t claim the cost of gifts you buy for your students or any time you pay for their personal expenses (e.g. their lunch, excursion fees or school books). You can claim self-education expenses if the course relates directly to your current job. You can’t claim a deduction if your study is only related in a general way to your job, or is designed to help you get a new one. You can claim a deduction when you drive between alternate workplaces for the same employer on the same day (e.g. from your school to another school to supervise an exam). Want to learn more? Check out www.ato.gov.au//Teacher-and-education-professionals---inc/

19.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Did we call you on your cell phone? Answer probably not There’s a new version of an old tax scam doing the rounds, but guess what scammers, we’re... exposing your secrets: - First, they’ll call with an automated message saying they’re from the tax department saying you’re being audited. - You’ll be asked to select an option to be put through an operator (*cough scammer*) who says you owe a tax debt. - If you question the caller or hang up, you’ll likely receive a call back about 30 mins later which appears to come from an AFP phone number in Sydney. (For all you detectives, it looks like us. BUT IT’S NOT, the scammers are just imitating our switchboard). - An AFP Federal Officer will then claim you’ll be arrested unless you pay the fine. DO NOT PAY! Remember - the AFP will NEVER request payment of fines or other monies over the phone. If you believe you or someone you know might be a scam victim, or have any information, you can report it through SCAMwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au) or your local police.

18.01.2022 Employers: Mistakes can happen from time to time Whether you’ve incorrectly self-assessed yourself for JobKeeper, or nominated your employees when they didn’t... quite meet the eligibility criteria, it’s important to double check your applications and let us know if a mistake has been made. Noticed a problem with yours? Give us a call and read what happens next at www.ato.gov.au//Keeping-JobKeeper-/JobKeeper-overpayments/

14.01.2022 Your bundle of joy isn’t going to wait until after the global pandemic. So how do parental leave and dad and partner pay affect your JobKeeper payments? If you...’re getting JobKeeper payments from your employer now, you’ll continue to get them when you’re on unpaid parental leave. If you access the government paid parental leave scheme, your JobKeeper payments will stop while you’re getting parental leave pay or dad and partner pay. But once your government paid parental leave scheme payments end, your JobKeeper payments should start back up (as long as your employer continues to meet the eligibility requirements). We’ve got more info about your parental leave entitlements here: https://coronavirus.fairwork.gov.au//leave-the-jobkeeper-s

14.01.2022 One of our staff members received a pre-recorded 'ATO scam' message on Wednesday. This is what happened when she called back Have you had one of these phone c...alls? 12.01.2022 Myth: It’s ok to be paid off the books. Fact. It really isn’t. If you’re being paid under the table (also known as cash-in-hand pay), you likely aren’t meeting... your tax obligations or getting your super entitlements, and you’re at risk of being underpaid your minimum pay rates. Myth: You don’t get paid for opening/closing the business. Fact: Employees must be paid for all hours they’re required to work and this includes time spent opening or closing a business. For example, if an employee is required to be at work at 7.45am to prepare for an 8am store opening (like cleaning and counting the till), they need to be paid from 7.45am. Myth: Lengthy unpaid work trials are always ok that’s how you get your foot in the door. Fact: Unpaid work trials are only ok for as long as needed to demonstrate the skills required for the job. Depending on the nature of the work, this could range from an hour to one shift and you should always be under direct supervision. Myth: You only need to get a pay slip if you ask for one. You need to be given a pay slip for every pay day. It’s a legal requirement. We also recommend employees keep their own records of when they work. This can help you check you’re being paid right and sort out any pay disputes. Use our tailored hospitality resources to check your minimum entitlements: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/fin/fast-food-restaurants-cafes

12.01.2022 If you’re under JobKeeper, your boss can require you to change duties using a JobKeeper enabling direction, but there are rules. So, unless you normally do dome...stic work for your boss, you shouldn’t be cleaning their house. Your boss can direct you to change duties, but the new duties must be: safe, including considering the nature and spread of coronavirus within the scope of your skills and ability and you must hold any licenses or qualifications required to do the job, and reasonably within the scope of your employer’s business operations. There are other rules, too. So, for example, your boss also needs to discuss the changes with you and give you at least three days’ written notice before giving you the direction, unless you agree to less. Also, your pay can’t be reduced for doing different duties. If the duties attract a higher base rate, you need to be paid at that higher rate. (21 and over) working under the Fast Food Award, you must be paid at least $26.76 per hour. But that’s not the end of the story: You must be paid at least $32.12 for working on the weekends Your shifts need to be at least 3 hours You get a paid ten-minute break if you work 4 or more hours as well as an unpaid meal break of between 30-60 minutes if you work more than 5 hours. If your workplace has an enterprise agreement these entitlements can change. Find out more: https://www.fairwork.gov.au//fast-food-/fast-food-industry

04.01.2022 A NSW man was handed a criminal conviction and fined $1,500 yesterday after claiming false work-related expenses on his tax return The bank exec claimed more... than $15,000 in travel expenses for ‘overseas conferences’ even though he hadn’t left the country that financial year! 03.01.2022 We’ve just announced a huge boost that will help thousands of Western Australians access TAFE and training courses with massive cuts to fees and a range of shor...t courses that will be completely free. As the economy recovers, skilled workers across a range of trades and occupations will be in high demand, which means that training will be vital to develop a skilled workforce. Our new $57 million package to support TAFE and training with make sure Western Australians can access the courses and training they need to access jobs in key areas. Last year we slashed fees on 34 WA TAFE courses with our Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative. Today we’re expanding that to cover another 39 courses - including things like agriculture, construction, plumbing, electrical trades, METRONET, nursing, early childhood education, manufacturing, community services and more. Fees for all these courses will be cut by at least 50%, with some course costs slashed by as much as 72%. From the second semester, the maximum annual fee students will pay is capped at $400 for concession students and youth and $1,200 for non-concession students. We’ve also provided $25 million for ‘Free TAFE Short Courses’ that have been developed alongside industry to engage displaced workers and youth and meet immediate and emerging skill requirements as the economy recovers. The free short courses will provide a launch-pad for students to up-skill for new jobs and provide pathways to full qualifications. The initial list of 15 short courses will be available to around 13,500 Western Australians and includes courses in heavy vehicle training, hospitality, logistics, cyber security, agriculture, civil construction and small business. The free short courses can also be used as a credit towards a full qualification from the expanded Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative. Enrolments for the TAFE courses will open on Monday 6 July 2020. For more information visit www.jobsandskills.wa.gov.au or contact your local Jobs and Skills Centre on 13 64 64. We have also put in place our Apprenticeship and Traineeship Re-engagement Incentive to get apprentices and trainees who lost their contracts during the COVID crisis back on the job. The Incentive provides employers with a one-off payment of $6,000 for hiring an apprentice and $3,000 for hiring a trainee whose training contract was terminated on, or after, March 1, 2020. There’s never been a more important time to invest in training and with these initiatives, there’s never been a better time to learn new skills.
