Soumak (Soumakh, Sumak) is a weaving technique used in the production of strong and decorative kilims, rugs, saddle bags and large cushions. Shahsavan kilims -hand woven by the nomadic pastoralist group residing in Northeastern Iran called Shahsavan tribe- have highly geometric patterns with rectilinear medallions aligned horizontally or vertically across the field while smaller improvised motifs adorn the background. It is also common to see stepped or latch hook medallions, the Turkish Memling guls, the ubiquitous boteh pattern and lots of small animal figures. Generally used as floor carpets in smaller areas around the house, especially as bedside mats, many people are starting to decorate their table and other furniture surfaces with these beautiful kilims. However, because of their size, bright colours and unique patterns, they are also becoming popular as hanging art pieces on the walls. Most of these kilims, which can be distinguished by their shiny/bright colours, are made of silk (weft) on cotton base (warp), while small number of them are made of wool (weft) on cotton (warp).
