25.01.2022 Cups and balls have been around since the 15th century. They were common in Victorian school playgrounds and are still used today. The game was simple but the idea was to work on the hand-eye co-ordination of the child. The hope was that the more they played with the toy, the better their co-ordination would become. Come check out our collections this weekend. ... We are open every Saturday & Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm #ayershousemuseum #nationaltrustsa

20.01.2022 Have you ever noticed how minuscule and narrow antique Victorian shoes appear? According to a 1870s ladies magazine, The foot is one of the chief points by which a woman’s social position is judged. If the feet are small, well-shod, and prettily used in walking, they add an additional charm to the appearance, and are an indication of high standing and of gentle birth. Assessments such as this led to the collective desire to make the foot look as small as possible, and, ...for that reason, to crush them into boots and shoes a size, or even two sizes, smaller than that of the foot itself. Come check out our shoe display, These Shoes Were Made for Walking. Now showing till the 28th of February 2021. Open weekends from 10am till 4pm #ayershousemuseum #nationaltrustsa

19.01.2022 Did you know that the word perfume derives from the Latin perfumare, meaning "to smoke through"? Perfumery, as the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley Civilization and possibly Ancient China. It was further refined by the Romans and the Arabs. The world's first-recorded chemist is considered to be a woman named Tapputi, a perfume maker mentioned in a cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. She distilled flowers, oil, and calamus with other aromatics, then filtered and put them back in the still several times. Come check out our interesting collections this weekend! 17.01.2022 Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Some were made of stone, like these soapstone irons from Italy. Earthenware and terracotta were also used, from the Middle East to France and the Netherlands. Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in... the US. This stayed cool while the metal bases were heated and the idea was widely imitated. At home, ironing traditional fabrics without the benefit of electricity was a hot, arduous job. Irons had to be kept immaculately clean, sand-papered and polished. They had to be kept away from burning fuel, and were regularly but lightly greased to avoid rusting. Beeswax was also used to prevent irons sticking to starched cloth. #ayershousemuseum #nationaltrustsa See more

17.01.2022 Did you know that before houses had water pipes, bathing took place in the warmest room of the house the kitchen. Water could be heated on the stove and poured in to a basic tin tub, and everyone would generally use the same bath water and then laundry would be done in it last. Carrying water was a HUGE task. If you had a bathtub on the second floor, water had to be carried up, as well (TWICE once to get the water up, and again to get the dirty water out! I’m certain th...at Laziness was actually the real reason that you were encourages not to bathe every day). If you were lucky to have a dedicated bathroom on the first floor, often, the drain went directly into the ground under the house. Toilets were outside, but eventually, sewer systems became necessary to fight disease. Come check out our collection this weekend. We are open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. #ayershousemuseum #nationaltrustsa See more

10.01.2022 In the Victorian era, opulence, ornate floral patterns and rich colors were must haves for the homes of the richest in society. It was the first time ever that area rugs were used, not only for utilitarian purposes, but also for purely decorative purposes. 04.01.2022 Three types of candle were commonly used during the Victorian period; tallow, spermaceti and beeswax. Tallow candles made from animal fat in moulds were the cheapest but they burnt with a smoky flame which produced progressively less and less light - and they stank. Spermaceti wax, made from whale oil, was harder than either beeswax or tallow and was least likely to soften in hot weather. Improvements in the design of the wicks shortly before the Victorian period commenced ha...d eliminated guttering, and the plaited wicks introduced in the 1820s curled out of the flame as they burnt, eliminating the need for constant trimming which plagued earlier candles. By the end of the century the modern paraffin wax candle was the most commonly used, being cheap, odourless and reliable. Come check out our collections this weekend!
