23.01.2022 SEVERE KENNEL COUGH OUTBREAK IN SOUTH QUEENSLAND AND NORTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES Please be aware that there have been multiple cases of Kennel Cough reported in th...e last few weeks in and around our local area. This appears to be a particularly strong strain of the virus. It's highly infectious and can be serious for young pups and senior dogs. It’s currently advised to not only avoid highly populated dog areas such as the beach and dog parks for dogs who fall in this high risk catorgory but to also ensure they are up to date with their vaccines. Symptoms: coughing, retching, gagging, throwing up clear liquid or foam. The incubation period can be up to 10 or 14 days so it can take a while for symptoms to appear. If your dog shows any sign of coughing please call us on 07 38021155 for advise and clinic protocols for appointments if required. We ask that if you believe your dog has or potential exposed to Kennel cough to wait in the car and a veterinarian will come out to assess. If you have concerns please call us to discuss an option which you are most comfortable with, we are happy to assist where possible.

22.01.2022 ARE LAUNDRY CHEMICALS AFFECTING YOUR PETS’ SKIN & HEALTH? If you wash your pet blankets and beds using popular fabric softeners and dryer sheets, that just w...ashed fresh smell comes from chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can negatively impact your pets’ health (coughing, rashy, itchy pets, anyone?). Dr. Anne Steinmann’s UW-Seattle research team found more than 25 VOCs emitted from dryer vents using these products, including well-known respiratory irritants like Acetone, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, but also Pentane (which causes skin rashes and upset stomach), Ethyl Acetate (on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list; causes anemia, changes in white blood cells and can damage the liver and kidneys), Benzyl Acetate (can be absorbed through the skin and is linked to pancreas problems) and Alpha-terpineol (causes headaches and nervous system disorders). Our pets can do without having to breathe in these chemical residues or having to lay on them, so here’s our Forever Dog Tip of the day: replace chemical-laden fabric softeners with a non-toxic DIY option! Recipe: Mix 6 cups white vinegar with 1 cup baking soda, let it fizz. When the fizz stops, pour mixture into a large glass container with a lid. Use 1 cup per load of laundry. We highlight all of the of home chemical risks that can negatively impact your dog’s health in the The Forever Dog book, available now for pre-order by clicking here: https://foreverdog.com/about/#order-window

11.01.2022 Warning - Pet Grade Mince & Preservatives If you feed pet mince please read carefully. This GSD suffered a nasty reaction having eaten a product ironically... named "Australia's Finest RAW", a pet grade meat product containing preservative 223. Preservative 223 (and other 22X sulphite preservatives) are found in many raw mince/meat pet foods and can trigger severe neurological conditions in cats and dogs as well as inhibit vitamin B/thiamine absorption. Despite health implications, it's still legal in Australia to use these preservatives. Many pet meats have been independently tested to have extremely high doses of these sulphites (one supermarket product tested 435 times more than stated on the label). The risk is tenfold when these products are fed to pets continuously, day after day. Whether the GSD pictured had a reaction to the sulphites or something else in the product is inconclusive, but we should all be aware of the risks of feeding these pet-grade meat pet foods. This 2011 article on News.com.au highlights how many years these preservatives have been allowed in pet foods despite the risks - https://www.news.com.au///4f912d7187490e5b4716ee589d66104a https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au//v-i-p-pet-mince-preser/

10.01.2022 Taking a rest after 20 hours of searching for survivors among the wreckage of the World Trade Center in 2001. Many of the search dogs became depressed because t...hey only found corpses instead of survivors, so the firefighters would frequently volunteer to be buried in some of the rubble so the dogs could find a living person, and that made all the difference. Sometimes I wonder if people deserve dogs.

07.01.2022 21 dogs have died in Australia (61 reported poisoned) from pet meat sourced in Victoria. Indospicine toxicity from horse meat is being investigated as the cause..., from a consignment of horses sourced from NT into Victoria. Meat sold as "beef" or "kangaroo" from Maffra Knackery (also trading as Backman's Greyhound Supplies) sold between 31st May and 3rd July fresh/frozen/cooked should not be fed, and it is advised any feeders of pet grade meat, particularly sourced in Victoria, investigate the source of the meat. PrimeSafe advise dog owners to seek prompt advice from their veterinarian if their dog shows signs of illness including sudden loss of appetite, lethargy or jaundice in a previously heathy animal. PrimeSafe and Agriculture Victoria continue to investigate. Indigofera toxicity, sometimes known as Birdsville disease, is known to affect horses and other grazing animals in tropic/subtropic regions of Australia. Many pet meats sold in pet stores are labelled as human grade and are safer to feed than pet grade meats. Please use caution. 04.01.2022 Warning We are investigating a number of consumer issues related to Ivory Coat. Moderate to severe reactions including vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, letharg...y, and dehydration. We are also investigating the death of a dog. It is inconclusive whether the product was the direct cause of death, but the product was subsequently fed at a later date to another family dog who suffered similar symptoms. If you have had issues with an Ivory Coat product please let us know. Manufacturer The Real Pet Food Company have been notified.
