25.01.2022 It is said that the bees happy buzz is in the musical note of middle C. When in danger or under threat, the note changes tone. It has been shown that bees can produce a wide range of frequencies from 10Hz to 1000Hz - with the majority of the buzz coming from the flap of their wings- up to 11400 times per minute! Bee #62993 is buried deep in this magnificent Magnolia, swipe to see the full orchestra and the conductor. #bees #magnolia #musictomyears
24.01.2022 Our honey has travelled far and wide this year. Being held high at Princes Street Christmas Market in Edinburgh and shown off at Aviators brewhouse in De Rust Harterbeesport South Africa. We think our honey is pretty good and so does the rest of the world. Let us know if you have sent a jar abroad
24.01.2022 Tools of the trade Nothing feels better than a spring clean... In Autumn. These are the basic tools any beekeeper will carry. When it is swarm season, these come with me everywhere! From the left; Bellows and smoker- which is used to calm the bees whilst working with them. It also masks their angry pheromone.... Hessian (from a local coffee roaster), we use this to smoke as it is cheap, can be cut into strips and easily carried. Plus my grandfather used the same material- a bit of family tradition. Hive tool, these come is all shapes and sizes, but I prefer these sturdy ones. About 6 tools in one. Lighter. Self explainitary. Waterproof box of adrenaline. Whilst myself and my family arent allergic. It is a safety measure and good practice to carry this in case of the inevitable. See more

21.01.2022 After a while the old brood frames (where the eggs are laid by the Queen ) get overused and dark with foot traffic, they need to be rotated around in the hive and eventually removed. What we can see here is the last of the babies "hatching" from this particular frame. They would have been all laid on the same day, within seconds of eachother. Now popping their heads out waiting for the nursery bees to feed them and help them out of their hexagonal cots. #bees #beekeeping #apiarylife #babies
21.01.2022 This was a swarm rescue from Lesmurdie. Sometimes the sheer volume of bees and the coordination of the colony surprises me. These girls were calm and followed my instructions down to a T. The countdown to Spring harvest begins.
21.01.2022 This may not seem like much of a photo to most, but what is being held up here is a frame of honey that was empty after being harvested 5 weeks ago. The white section is "capped off" and ready to eat as honey. The lower sections havent matured yet and the bees are still processing this area. Once completely capped off we will be able to harvest this frame. In 5 weeks; the bees have cleaned up the old frame, laid new wax comb, collected pollen, nectar & water, fanned the mixture until dehydrated enough, then capped it off with a thin layer of wax. Remarkable!
20.01.2022 Morning tea is served- the only thing missing is a . Some of our girls lining up and making the most of a quick hive clean up. A late harvest coming soon! #autumn #beekeeping #honeymonth #honeycomb #honey #goodmorning
19.01.2022 Its a Saturday for some, but for others, its work boots on (all 3 pairs). Nectar needs to be drunk. Pollen needs to be collected. Flowers need visiting. There is honey to be made! #beekeeping #honeycomb #honey #bee #spring #workboots #busybee
17.01.2022 Being popular is hard sometimes. We sell out faster than you can say Honeycomb. We have just introduced four new hives into our collection to keep you honey eaters at bay. We should be harvesting from these girls by spring 2020.
17.01.2022 Harvest day tomorrow!Harvest day tomorrow!
16.01.2022 The Almond plant (Prunus dulcis) only blossoms for 2-3 weeks, but it is the busiest time for the girls . Signaling a change in the weather and promising warmer days, some fresh pollen goes a long way. #honeybee #pollen #pollenation #beekeeping #blossom #almond #prettyflowers #moonlight
15.01.2022 Finally available . Mixed floral honey and honeycomb. Organic farming principles. See picture for prices. #perthhills #madeinperth #madeinaustralia #mundaring #swanview #viveash #honeycomb #honey #perthsmallbusiness #beekeeping #bee #bees
14.01.2022 A kiss of goodluck for these 6 young queens. These beautiful young things will be going into our existing hives along with their retinue (a group of bees dedicated to feeding and grooming the queen). A fresh queen changes the colonies demeanor, gives them a boost of young eggs and makes them more productive for the following spring. Hats off to her majesty! #beekeeping #apiarylife #backyardbeekeeping #bee #queenbee #retinue #hive
13.01.2022 One of the less "stingy" activities of beekeeping WA livestock law states that all beekeeping equipment must be marked with the registered beekeeper brand number- including each frame that sits within the hive box. We see TL8 when we close our eyes!
13.01.2022 The feeling when you reach 300 Facebook likes. A million bees thankyou in return! Thankyou for helping us to nurture our hives and bring you that sticky sweet stuff! B Honey
12.01.2022 Our newest employee is very excited to be getting sticky and deep into the hives. Iza has been around bees her entire life (5yrs), but today was the first day she conducted her first inspection. Nervous but passionate. 12.01.2022 Who remembers our post from November? It has been exactly 100 days since these single brood boxes where settled in. Now we are 2 supers (boxes) high. With this Marri flowering it looks like we will soon have more delicious honey to harvest!
11.01.2022 A quick job in the Swan Valley today, recieved a call to remove some bees close to a house within a hollow log. This is called a "trap out". Effectively, it is a one way funnel that the bees travel down away from their existing hive and into a nucleus or "baby" hive where they will move into and entice the queen in. Then we can simply remove the nucleus box away safely. This prevents the tenants needing to resort to insecticides or fire.
11.01.2022 Thank you to our customers, we have had a record sell out this season! All the honey has disappeared quicker than expected. Fingers crossed we may get in another harvest in before the weather turns. Watch this space!
11.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all our honey lovers out there!
10.01.2022 Harvesting this week!
10.01.2022 This Eucalyptus wandoo fell many years ago, but has since made a home for many thousands of bees . The landowner asked us to remove this colony as they were highly allergic and the log is in the way for a new dwelling. It took over an hour to get into the hard wood and remove the honeycomb & bees. These lucky girls will be setting into their new digs tonight. #beekeeping #wandoo #perthhills #bees #honeycomb #spring #nostingstoday @ Swan View, Western Australia, Australia
10.01.2022 Friday chill out time Laden with heavy pollen, these busy girls are having a tough time staying inline for a safe landing. Taken this morning from a recent cutout from a felled log. They continue to land on the log then walk a short distance down to the awaiting hive box where the queen is. They will be heading to their forever home this weekend- watch this space! #bee #pollen #airtravel #turbulence #beekeeping #slowmotion
10.01.2022 World bee day is coming! The 2020 Global Online Waggle Dance Challenge is an attempt to achieve 20,000 waggle dance videos, from 20 countries, in 20 days, ending on the 20th May 2020. 10.01.2022 No this is not bee spaghetti, or the horrid hive worm. What is pictured here is a baby hive (nucleus) for a customer which was cut out from a compost bin due to be sprayed. The honey comb, brood, queen and bees were saved and held into position with elastic bands. The bees have since taken the bands off and thrown them out the front door ready for bin day. How smart is that?!

05.01.2022 An easy swarm capture hanging off some low foliage. These girls walked straight in and settled within 10minutes. If you see a swarm in the Perth Metro area, contact us via our Facebook page.
04.01.2022 A productive day. Honey now available!

02.01.2022 Have you noticed the Marri (Corymbia calophylla) flowering yet? The impressive megablossoms have come alive and hum to the distinctive tone of happy bees. Marri is a Nyoongar word for blood, which has been used to describe the sap that weeps from wounds in the bark. The iconic honky nut is also credited with the inspiration for May Gibbs gumnut babies from the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie stories. The bees go crazy on the red gum, showering the bees in pollen and sweet nectar. Busting at the seems; one of our apiary sites in Mundaring sits beneath one of these gorgeous beauties. #marritree #eucalyptus #pollen #nectar #snugglepotandcuddlepie #nyoongar #bees #beekeeping #corymbia

02.01.2022 This darling girl here has found some woodware outside in the sun. It has been in a hive but now we are reaching winter its put aside to be cleaned up. The brown substance to the right is called Propolis. Bee number 77258 (I checked her ID) is stealing this propolis to take back to her own hive. The bees make propolis, they combine the sap with their own discharges and beeswax, they create this sticky product and use it as a coating to build their hives and block holes. Resea...rchers arent exactly sure why they make it- but the product appears to provide protection from some bacteria, viruses, and fungi. More than 300 compounds in propolis have been identified. The majority of these compounds are forms of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that fight disease and damage in the body. Thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations used propolis for its medicinal properties. Greeks used it to treat abscesses. Assyrians put it on wounds and tumors to fight infection and help the healing process. Egyptians used it to embalm mummies. #propolis #beekeeping #honey #bees #beeswax #woodworking #polyphenols #antioxidants
