TRUTH: Sit down on the floor, or lie down with your feet rais...ed to encourage more blood flow to the brain. Putting your head between your legs could result in a head injury if you actually faint and fall forwards. 22.01.2022 Todays First Aid For Life tip is how to respond to an epileptic seizure Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing... seizures. DURING A SEIZURE: 1. Protect the patient from injury and place something soft under their head and shoulders. 2. Time the seizure. DO NOT try to restrain or move the patient (unless in danger), and do not put anything in their mouth. AFTER A SEIZURE: 3. Put the patient in the recovery position as soon as jerking stops, or immediately if they have vomited or have food or fluid in their mouth. 4. Manage any injuries resulting from the seizure. 5. Its okay if the patient falls asleep after a seizure, but continue to check their breathing. 6. Call an ambulance if the patient remains unresponsive for more then 5 minutes after the seizure ends, if they are injuries, or if a second seizure begins. 14.01.2022 FIRST AID MYTH & TRUTH MYTH: Use the Heimlich maneuver for choking. This is a tricky one! The Heimlich (abdominal thrusts) is no longer recommended as th...e method of responding to choking. Why? If done incorrectly, there is considerable evidence of harm caused by this procedure. Therefore it is not recommended as the method of responding to choking. TRUTH: When an adult or child over 1 is choking: + Encourage a strong, effective cough. + If the patient is unable to cough to dislodge the object, call 000. + Proceed to perform 5 back blows - Lean the patient forward and using the heel of your palm give 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades (checking for dislodgement of the object after each back blow). + If this is ineffective, proceed to give 5 chest thrusts (not abdominal thrusts) - Place one hand in the middle of the patients back for support and heel of the other hand in the CPR compression position, checking if the object is dislodged after each thrust. + Continue alternating between 5 back blows and chest thrusts until help arrives, or begin CPR if the patient becomes unconscious. #fastaidchat #firstaid #fastaid
