25.01.2022 The design of the St Lucia house was an exercise in ecologically sustainable practice. Located in a quiet street yet in very close proximity to the University of Queensland, the social context as well as the steep terrain of the site presented... early input into the houses design. The response was to adopt the idea of a retreat; a design that responds directly to the terrain and ecological context, while also maintaining a positive dialogue with the street. All habitable areas of the house are designed to flow seamlessly to an adjacent landscaped outdoor space. The built form is terraced to create a positive engagement and meaningful dialogue with its surroundings. The passive sustainability components explored in the project include: a green wall to the Western facade; large overhangs to exposed walls; a thermal mass wall as the structural spine of the house; water features designed for both evaporative cooling and natural light ingress; a thermal chimney for heat extraction; and openings to encourage abundant cross ventilation and natural light. The layout and design of the house caters for a joyous family environment.

The Elder's Village is located in Western Australia and provides 9 units and many enriching communal spaces to the Ngarluma Elders and surrounding community. We, as community architects, endeavour to incorporate public facilities and pragmatic elements which will benefit a wider community into all of our projects. 20.01.2022 The Moreton Bay College Year 6 facilities upgrade was a close collaboration between executive staff, head of department, teachers and students to identify the needs for a new learning environment. These insights became the basis of a design for collaborative facilities, where we took advantage of the high ceilings to create a new reading zone where two classes could come together. This revitalisation allowed better connection between classes at two levels. A more collaborat...ive art and teachers zone was then created on the ground level and a collaborative reading area on the upper level. The net result was a more flexible, connected and vibrant learning environment. The new connections created opportunities for spontaneous interaction between students and staff of different classes, as well as prolonging the useful life of the buildings. The designs use of shared zones and visual connections between all internal and external circulation routes created a welcoming atmosphere and a more harmonious precinct. #moretonbaycollege #education #architecture #schoolreferbishment #baarchitects #interiors

10.01.2022 The recently completed Ngarluma Elders VIllage in the Pilbara was initiated by the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation with the aim of addressing a number cultural, social and physical needs of the Elders in one housing community. The nine units have been designed to accommodate the needs of up to18 Ngarluma Elders while promoting their position in the community as mentors and role models for middle age and young Aboriginal people. This is facilitated through a number of communal... spaces around the core of the village. A moonlight theatre and campfire area offer great opportunities for outdoor activities such as movie nights with friends and family, sharing stories and cooking traditional meals. The strong Ngarluma tradition of making art will be catered for in the Studio and Gazebo space, which also has the flexibility for hosting workshops and meetings. For the landscaping approach, a number of traditional native medicine plants have been incorporated into the design as a means for Elders to continue the passing down of this important knowledge to younger generations.
