02.01.2022 LETS TALK HOOVES I see many videos online. Of horses trained to stretch out their front legs beautifully. But the image is ruined by a horses toe pointing down.... Landing on the toe. OUCH! So many wrongs with this. Lets start with the pressure on the coffin bone. As the horse puts pressure on that toe. The impaction wriggles the coffin bone. And then flows through to the navicular bone . This can then cause many issues later on. Yes it looks pretty. Like a ballerina doing a Grande Jeté. But a horse can weigh 500kgs plus. And the pressure of movements can double the strain the inner hoof capsule goes through. The hoof walls are considered as a protective shield covering the sensitive internal hoof tissues (like the exoskeleton of arthropods), as a structure devoted to dissipating the energy of concussion, and as a surface to provide grip on different terrains. They are elastic and very tough, and vary in thickness from 6 to 12 mm. The walls are composed of three distinct layers: the pigmented layer, the water line and the white line. The heel bulb works as the horses 'shock absorber'. The spongy tissue aborbse the shock of landing. And this tissue then pulls fresh blood to the hoof as well. Encouraging fresh blood to be pulled down to circulate the hoof. The natural perfusion of blood into the hoof also plays a large role in shock absorption. As the hoof loads and fills fully with blood, it dissipates the energy and shock of the landing. As it lifts off the ground, the blood leaves the hoof and circulates back up the legs and through the body and heart. Many issues can be prevented by having your horse correctly balanced in the trim. Cracks, thrush, abcesses, lameness, pedal bone issues, navicular issues, leg issues. To name a few . Have a look at your horses movements in the paddock. Then have a look at your horses movements on the lunge. Especially when your horse is extending movement in a trot. Is your horse toe first landing? If so, video it, and send it to your hoof specialist who trims the feet. Then look online. Start educating yourself about the biology of a horses hoof. Cause and effect of different ways of trimming. Once you have the horses hoof trimmed to be correct in balance for the horse. And heel first landing. It is amazing how many problems you will solve. And how fluid and smooth your horses movements get.
