25.01.2022 Our Club Weekend for August will be held this weekend with fishing kicking off at 5pm Friday afternoon and weigh in on Sunday at 3pm. Our monthly members draw is back up to $100 so come down for your chance to win. It’s looking like we might be gifted with a small break in the winds for some of the weekend, so if your boat has been quarantining for the last few months, it would be a good idea to check over both your boat and it’s safty gear like dates on EPERBs and flairs, regos etc. we are all looking forward to a fantastic and well overdue weekend on the water, and if all goes well there will be plenty to see at the weigh in. Remember everyone is always welcome, you don’t have to be a member, just come down for a chat and a coldie .

12.01.2022 Despite the standard Babinda weather, our August round 2 catch up club weekend for May went better than expected. With estuary fishing pretty much the only option, our Juniors got right amongst it. With grey clouds looming, anglers donned there wet weather gear, a few extra towels and hit the water. Russell heads was the popular choice for most with the kids hitting the pontoons and jetties while mums and dads supervised from with a beverage under cover. The relentless ...winds made it challenging for boaties even in the river, however some sheltered spots could be found in the anabranch and the Sorinson area. Our Senior Angler of the month went to Colby Stickland with a Stonking 65cm Flathead, followed closely by Sheree McCulloch who also landed nice Flathead and Fingermark. All our juniors were winners this weekend with Ben De Pauuw landing a good looking pair of sotties, Evie Sheehan bagging a tasty Mangrove Jack and Cooper and Shaylee McCulloch killing it with a swag of Bream and Travelly. A tremendous effort from all who braved the damp conditions and got out for a bit of fun. With a modest number of fish weighed on Sunday, it was fantastic to see so many people come down for a chat and a coldie. Our monthly members draw went unclaimed again which takes our jackpot up to $200. Over all, another great weekend had by all. And if you missed out on all of the action on the weekend, don’t despair, we are doing all again for our September meet this weekend!! And don’t forget, it’s Father’s Day on Sunday, what’s better way to make dads day than to come down to the clubhouse on Sunday afternoon for the 3pm weigh in. We might even have something special happening for all the dads, so keep an eye on our page. Everyone is always welcome so come down for a chat and a coldie See more

06.01.2022 Our club weekend for July was the start of some normality for all of our keen anglers across the region. There was some easing of conditions as the weekend progresses but for those eager to get on the water on Friday afternoon it was nothing short of dismal. The estuaries, sheltered headlands and close islands where most popular to anglers for the best part of the weekend with larger vessels able to punch out to the reefs and try there luck from early Sunday. The Mackerel ...season is well underway and despite a shy turnout at weigh-in, reports show many anglers bagging out after braving the relentless weather. The drop in temperatures has slowed up the barramundi takings in the region lately but with the continuous wet plaguing us, hopefully plenty of the fingerlings released in previous months are thriving. Our Sub Junior Angler of the month went to Miley McCulloch who landed a nice Trevally at Russell Heads. Mum Renae McCulloch also claimed a tasty Grunter to keep it company. Junior Angler of the month was taken out by Shaylee McCulloch with a classic Russel River Fingermark. Shaylee, brother cooper and Mum Sheree McCulloch also tested dads filling skills taking a haul of good sized brim and a nice Flathead. Linc Costa was our Senior Angler of the Month presenting a hefty Spanish mackerel that was taken on dead bait while bottom bashing. Linc also bagged a pair of nice Queenies to top of the weekend. Other notable catchers were Kieren Roveglia and Riannon Bettini’s mad reef session landing a swag of lovely Coral Trout. It was great to see so many back at the clubhouse on Sunday catching up on what has seemed like forever. Our monthly members draw however went unclaimed which takes the jackpot to $100 for August, so come down for your chance to win. The club has also received our QAFCA Tight Lines booklets for our members so please come down and pick up your copy. As you may have seen on previous posts we are having a few catch up weigh-in’s. Please check out our latest calendar in the pics and let everyone know. We haven’t had much of a year so far so let’s gear up and rip into what’s left! Our club weekend for August will be the 7th, 8th and 9th with our monthly meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday 4th. See more

06.01.2022 August round 2. This weekend we will be catching up on our missed May club weekend. Fishing kicks off on Friday at 5pm with weigh-in at 3pm Sunday. Our monthly members draw is currently $150 so come down for your chance to win. The lovely weather we’ve been having doesn’t look like it’s going make it for the weekend, and with our offshore fishing taking precedence for most anglers so far this season, now might be the time to gear up and have a proper go at the estuary. Just a quick reminder that Fathers’ Day is next weekend which will also be our September club weekend so clear your schedule. Rain, hail or shine we will all be down at the clubhouse on Sunday at 3pm and as usual everyone is always welcome so come down for a chat and a coldie

05.01.2022 The Weather Gods were smiling for our September round 2 Club Weekend. Anglers were treated to a weekend of picturesque conditions with clear skies, calm seas and some amazing fishing action. The early forecast had most anglers making preparations mid weekend and by Friday afternoon it was game on. For some of the junior anglers it was a school holiday dream come true with the prospect of a day at the islands or even a reef trip on the cards. Anglers wasted no time taking ...advantage of the glassy conditions, getting right amongst it from the get go on Friday. Night fishing was always going to be popular and those who stayed up were handsomely rewarded. Saturday morning saw similar conditions with a general breeze building throughout the day. Those who were able headed for the reef and most were greeted with hungry coral trout on the chew. Deeper waters also proved productive with reds willing to test the arms of a weary angler. By Saturday afternoon the winds had picked up somewhat, and most of those out wide headed back in to the islands for a well deserved dip and relax in the shade. Spanish mackerel were still on the menu and several were taken on the troll around the islands over the weekend. Estuary Fishing also got a look in, and with a cool breeze keeping the sand fly’s under control, anglers enjoying the serenity of the late afternoon high tide. Senior anglers of the month went to Frank-john Wulms with his 13.4kg Spaniard, and Kieren Roveglia with his 10kg Red Emperor. Junior anglers of the month went to Kimberly Brand with her monster 7.73kg Nannygai, and Cooper McCulloch with his stonking 11.8kg Gold Spot Cod. Congratulations to everyone that got out on the water on on the weekend, we were inundated with top quality fish at the weigh-in and what a magnificent turnout. Our Monthly Members Draw went unclaimed yet again this weekend and now jackpots to a crazy $300. Our club weekend for October will be on the 16th to 18th with our monthly meeting Tuesday the 6th at 6:30pm. We are getting toward the pointy end of the year and our score board is really starting to take shape, but if you still haven’t managed to get into it yet, do not despair! There is still plenty of categories up for grabs. It might even be time to have a serious go in the estuary. All in all, another great weekend with plenty of fish, family and fun. We can’t wait till next month See more

03.01.2022 It’s official, we have some Fantastic prize packs ready to go, Not to mention our $200 monthly members draw! So come down this Sunday for your chance to win. We have also decided to step it up with stake burgers as well as our usual sausages sizzle. A huge thanks to Lee Longs Gordonvale , BCF Cairns, Tackle World Cairns and our good mates at Great Northern for the swag of goodies we will be giving away on Sunday. Fishing kicks off at 5pm Friday, but if you don’t get a chance to wet a line don’t despair, all fun starts 3pm Sunday so come down for a chat and a coldie, and make it the the best Father’s Day ever.

02.01.2022 What a fantastic Father’s Day! Our Club weekend for September was yet again an up hill battle against the wind and rain, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of our members. Junior anglers eager to hit the water had dashed the hopes of a sleep-in for dads across the region this weekend. Some keen anglers were able to set off straight after school on Friday while others had to hold out for one more sleep. With most captains hosting the whole family, offshore fishing were onc...e again sadly off the cards, making Russell Heads the popular port of call. The Midday high tide and mild run made for pleasant conditions while the odd scattered shower took care of the heat. For some, it would have been refreshing to have some thoughtfully prepared snacks in the eski instead of just the usual old beers bobbing in a slurry of blood and bait juice. Catching live bait proved fairly successful for most with plenty of herring around the structures and up small tributaries. Getting something to eat them however was a different story, and even those brave enough for a night fish found it unproductive. Those willing to put in the hard yards were eventually rewarded. Senior and junior anglers of the month went to Courtney and Evie Sheehan who along with sisters Lara and Hailey bagged a swag of Trevally, Mangrove Jacks n a nice Bream. (Captain Nolan Sheehan also pictured). Other notable catches from the weekend were Terry Woollie who managed to land a nice mangrove Jack and Tiahna Aldred also scored a good sized Bream. We also had a fantastic turnout to our weigh it on Sunday with dads going in the draw for a stack of prizes thanks to our lovely sponsors, Great Northern, Lee Longs Gordonvale, BCF Cairns, Tackle World Cairns and our very own Jade Atkinson from Babinda Pitstop and Pizzeria who threw in a $50 pizza voucher! Congratulations to the many who took home prizes, and a huge thanks everyone who came down for a burger and a few beverages, it was great to see such good support for our (quite large actually) little club. Our Monthly Members Jackpot Draw went unclaimed again so we are up to a massive $250 so make sure your here next weigh-it for a crack at that one. We will be holding a September round 2 Club Weekend to make up for our June round that we missed due to Covid. It will kick off on Friday the 25th at 5pm with weigh in Sunday the 27th at 3pm. It would be great to see you all back again especially with $250 up for grabs, fingers crossed for some calm weather. As usual everyone is always welcome so come down for a chat and a coldie See more

02.01.2022 Our club weekend for August was just what we had ordered. Anglers spent last week eagerly watching the weather forecast as the prospect of a flat weekend slowly came to fruition. By 4pm Friday, boat ramps across the region were a buzz with boaties hastily preparing to hit the water. As usual, the inshore islands and close reef proved most popular however the glamorous conditions did allow for smaller vessels to venture further out in search of new ground. The good condi...tions held up for Saturday morning but heavy cloud cover and scattered showers loomed on the horizon and it wasn’t long before boats could be seen heading homeward. The winds did ease somewhat for the late afternoon and some made their way back out to fish into the night. This time of year usually brings whales up to our warmer tropical waters and plenty were spotted frolicking around the islands and inshore reefs over the weekend. For the keen anglers there was even a chance to duck out for a last minute crack on Sunday morning, but by then the waters were starting to get a bit uncomfortable. Our usual mid year hauls of Spanish mackerel proved a little underwhelming for the weekend with most anglers targeting them but only a hand full weighed in. There where however reports of good numbers taken out from Mourilan early in the week and over the weekend. Night fishing proved most productive while day time bottom bashing was slow going and the presents of sharks added to the frustration. Renae McCulloch, Sheree McCulloch and Steve Morris were among the few who managed to round up a Spaniard over the weekend. Oliver Dunn presented a magnificent looking passion fruit trout as well as a few sweetlip emperor and a tasty Moses perch. Justin Benvenuti, Kieren Roveglia and Riannon Bettini had by far the best weekend as far as fishing goes, presenting a Ute load of spectacular reef species including, Nannigai, Emperor, Coral Trout, Perch and Rosy Jobfish. Our Monthly Members draw went unclaimed again so it now jackpots to $150. We will be having a catch up weekend on the 28-30 of this month to make up for one lost dew to the COVID restrictions, so hopefully this weather will hang around for a few weeks. All in all a fantastic weekend! See more
