22.01.2022 BABINDA STUDENT SURGES FORWARD Babinda student Kel-sie van Rees has reached yet another stage towards her goal of becoming Australian Lions Youth of the Year 2019. ... Her success as both Overall Winner and Public Speaking winner in the Inter-Zone judging at Tully last Saturday confirmed her place in the District Final in Townsville next weekend. Public speaking is 30% of the points score necessary to become overall winner. Her powerful speech on Domestic Violence won over both the audience of over 60 and the judging panel. This confirmed her position as the ideal candidate to move forward. Kel-sie is joint School Captain at the Babinda State School and is sponsored in this quest by the Lions Club of Babinda. All Babinda and now the Cassowary Coast region wish her well over the forthcoming three stages competing at the District, State and National levels. This annual quest attracts over 1000 entrants nationally and requires up to 6 levels of judging reaching the National Final in May. It is organised by local Lions Clubs and supported by community fund raising projects throughout Australia. Group photo l to r. 15.01.2022 YOUTH OF THE YEAR 2019 CLUB FINAL The first local judging in the Lions Youth of the Year 2019 took place at the Babinda Tavern on Saturday 9th February. Finalists were Audrey van Ballegooyen, Kel-sie van Rees and Tidal van Rees. The Public Speaking winner was Tidal Van Rees. Overall Winner from the Babinda judging was Kel-sie Van Rees who now progresses to the next stage.... Congratulations to all entrants. Babinda coordinators Mel Elledge from Lions and Kellie Thompson from the High School were delighted with the Saturday public judging function. The entrant’s ability to answer impromptu questions for up to 2 minutes with a speech and then follow-up with a prepared speech for 5 minutes is an important part of the judging process. All contestants performed with great distinction, a comment echoed by Principal Rob O’Brien in the audience. This is the 50th consecutive year this national youth competition has been held which continues to attract high calibre entrants and support. The Overall Winner will now compete at a Zone Level judging at Babinda on 9th March. This will be against three winners from Innisfail, Tully and Mission beach. From there, a winner will progress upwards towards a National Final on 4th May at Geelong Victoria. Picture 1- l to r. 12.01.2022 A HELP UP FOR A BABINDA SENIOR Finding a genuine local need and solving it is very satisfying in community service work. Annie Wonga, aboriginal elder of Babinda, is one who steps up time and time again to recount the traditional stories and make everybody feel welcome at public events and occasions in the area. Rarely does the community get a chance to do something personal for her as age catches up with her physical capabilities. ... Last December the Babinda Lions Club members got down and dirty and constructed a concrete walk up ramp giving Annie direct access to her carport. It was highly successful and a welcome addition. Getting the team back together for a little dedication ceremony at the site has been almost impossible during the pandemic this year. It happened just last week making it a highlight in what is a very difficult year for genuine community service activities. Pictures: 1 The small project plaque. 2 The team on the site. Glen O’Malley, Ted Griffin, Frank Gatti, Annie Wonga, Stephen Gatti. Missing was Tony Lanzi. 3 Other pictures include construction on the ramp.
11.01.2022 YOUTH OF THE YEAR DISTRICT FINAL Babinda student Kel-sie van Rees has triumphed as a winner after four rounds of judging, interviews, impromptu questions and prepared speeches to audiences totalling almost 300 people. The Lions Youth of the Year competition held its District Judging on Saturday 23rd in Townsville after having moved from individual club Judging then narrowing the field down at Babinda, Tully and then Townsville. The Overall Winner from a field of 6 was Nichola...s Carrol from Mackay. The next stage for Nicholas is the State judging in Brisbane and North Queensland wishes him success. Kel-sie did both herself and the Babinda High School proud by taking out the Public Speaking award after what has been a gruelling series of week-end judging. Babinda Lions Club sponsored her and club members as well as her family have followed her at every level of the journey. She can now take a rest from this great personal development activity and concentrate on her many other activities within the school. The Lions Club of Babinda appreciates the support given to her and the project as well as that given by the school Principal and staff.
09.01.2022 BABINDA LIONS START A NEW YEAR. During June the Lions Club of Babinda saw out the old year and started a new one with a very successful handover dinner meeting at the State Hotel Babinda. Formed in 1971 the club is still strong and boasts three original members within the current 24 members. The over 30 Lions members and guests at this meeting were treated to a video presentation of the last year’s activities and a toast to Lions by Councillor Brett Moller as well as inducti...on of the full new board. Three new members James Dunn, Evelyn King and Anthony Lanzi were inducted into Lions by Zone Chairman Irene Braddick and made welcome by all present. The club presented a cheque for $1000 to a Babinda youth group which meets weekly and hosts an annual camp at Lake Tinaroo. Outgoing president Steve Gatti handed over the reins to incoming president Fred Lizzio with his best wishes for a successful year of service within the Babinda area community. New president Fred said that this coming year presents some interesting new challenges to the club. These included an increased emphasis on recruiting new female members and a solid presence in community activities and family friendly events.
05.01.2022 BABINDA’S GROCERY GRAB A WINNER In September the club announced that the small town’s very first Great Australian Grocery Grab would result in a lucky shopper filling their supermarket trolley in a SPEED SHOPPING frenzy. A short, sharp and novel competition with a fun ending. ... The event finished with an unexpected twist. Instead of having the Winner Takes All the St Vincent De Paul Society (Vinnies) will now distribute, at their discretion, the winner’s proceeds to deserving families in the Babinda area. The organisers are confident that this unexpected ending will be well received after the real winner chose to remain anonymous and donated their prize to someone in genuine need. This will all happen in time for Christmas. As predicted, the town’s first Grocery Grab was a great success. Babinda has one supermarket and the enthusiastic participation of the Spar Supermarket management and staff was the key to its approval. Lions members aided by a number of other local businesses then made it succeed. It raised funds to be used locally via Lions and Vinnies as well as nationally through the Lions Cord Blood Foundation. Babinda Lions appreciates everyone who bought the 1000 tickets with the chance of being the winner as well as supporting a good cause. The fund raising event is held nationally each year where participating supermarkets give it their support. The event worked well for Babinda, is regarded as a sell out and is in the planning for next year.
03.01.2022 THE LITTLE BOOK THAT COULD BE YOUR LIFE SAVER - AND IT’S FREE! The Emergency Information Medical Information Book contains all your information and medical records which are needed if an ambulance is called and you need to be transported to hospital.... When an ambulance is called a typical scenario is that paramedics may be unable to quickly obtain important details of the patient’s condition or medications they may be taking. Lions clubs, the Ambulance Services and Rotary clubs have combined to produce and distribute this booklet for you to provide patient contacts, service or carer provider information, medications and current medical conditions. This can enable the paramedic to treat and ready a patient for transport to hospital. Babinda Lions Club has made arrangements for this free book to be available though the Babinda Pharmacy. In addition, the pharmacy is happy to provide you with a listing of your current medications for inclusion the book. It is designed to be prominently available in the home best place being on the fridge. Stocks are available NOW but are limited. Another Lions Club of Babinda community project.
