25.01.2022 World Breastfeeding Week is from August 1 to 7. Let's take this opportunity to celebrate all those mothers who have given up countless hours to breastfeed their babies; the ones who have persisted despite massive challenges; and those who may not have achieved their breastfeeding goals and are still processing these difficult feelings. We see you and give you a high five and a big hug.

14.01.2022 When Michelle gave birth prematurely with no access to an incubator, she was given some simple but lifesaving advice: to wrap her newborn close to her chest using 'kangaroo care'. As the baby boy snuggled against mum's skin, his body temperature stabilised, his heart rate steadied and he began to breathe more easily.

13.01.2022 We had a lovely time this morning at 'Welcoming the Babies' with Local MP Amanda Rishworth.

13.01.2022 Endorphins are chemicals produced naturally by the nervous system to cope with pain or stress. They are often called "feel-good" chemicals because they can act as a pain reliever and happiness booster. Endorphin levels increase toward the end of pregnancy. And again increase during birth to relieve pain, create a state of euphoria after birth and to promote mother-baby bonding. Endorphin levels are their highest just after birth, and it takes two weeks after birth for end...orphin levels in the body to return to normal. Endorphin levels are highest during vaginal deliveries in unmedicated birthers. They are lower in birthers who have a cesarean section after laboring on their own for some time and even lower in birthers who have a cesarean without experiencing labor. 02.01.2022 In the hospitals we always talk medical terms here are some common Labor and Delivery terms you should know before giving birth! Bloody Show : This type of vaginal bleeding is actually from your cervix as you are dilating more, your cervix has a tendency to bleed whenever its manipulated! Some women have bloody show with early labor, but you typically have a lot more as you are progressing, and during pushing! Effaced : effacement just refers to the process o...f your cervix thinning! Along with opening to 10 cm, your cervix is long and thick before labor, and has to thin (aka EFFACE), during labor to accommodate baby! Fetal Monitoring : You may be placed on the monitor to track babys heart rate once you arrive to the hospital! This allows us to see how baby is doing! Some women prefer intermittent monitoring and/or auscultation with a Doppler if they are low risk! Posterior : When baby is sunny side up, as opposed to babys face facing towards your spine. This position is common among first time moms, and can contribute sometimes to longer, more difficult labors. It can also cause back labor too. Meconium : Occasionally baby poops inside you, during labor, and it may turn the amniotic fluid a green/brown color. Sometimes this is due to stress, but more often its just due to the fact that baby is full term and some babies just do this! A few extra nurses may be at your delivery just in case baby comes out needing resuscitation. Anterior Lip : Not talking about your lips! An anterior lip is when you are about 9.5 centimeters, and you have a little more cervix on the front to get rid of before you push! Crowning : When we can see babys head when you push, and its not going back in! Only way is out! Perineum : You know that area between your vagina and your butt-hole? Yep, thats your perineum! Its the most common place women may tear during birth! Engagement : Not talking rings lol! Engagement is when baby settles down into your pelvis, and is pressing onto your pelvis bones, and not letting up, it usually happens in the weeks leading up to labor! What other terms should I do?? This was a fun post for me!! . -Reposted from Mommy Labor Nurse See more
