25.01.2022 When I first tried to sleep train my daughter, it was a disaster! She was a sensitive wee soul, she was shy even as a baby, she didn't like bright lights, and become over tired easily. I didn't understand this, and leapt straight in with controlled crying. Crying for Africa and no sleep for anyone is all I ended up with.... No one learnt to self settle, my daughter wasn't sleeping through the night, and I felt like a failure. I felt defeated, why was this so hard? Then I stumbled across a book about temperaments, and the 9 different traits which make up our temperament. Activity level. Biological rhythms. Sensitivity. Intensity of reaction. Adaptability. Approach/withdrawal. Persistence. Distractibility. These applied to babies as much as they do adults. From here over the years working with thousands of babies and different sleep training methods, I began to understand that different sleep training techniques suited different babies sleep temperaments. He did have colic and reflux so that didn’t help. 22.01.2022 I felt like we’d tried everything with our 1 year old girl and nothing had worked. From following sleep app schedules and settling techniques to going to a 5 day sleep school (twice!). 19.01.2022 If you have a newborn baby, this is my recommended newborn bed time routine. It starts at 5pm assuming your last nap of the day ended at 5pm, so if your nap ends earlier to later, adjust to suit your baby. I recommend half a feed before the bath so your baby doesn't get hungry and cry in the bath. Having baby bathed and swaddled in the hour is the key to avoiding an over tired crying mess. 18.01.2022 Without consolidated night sleep us parents struggle to do our job whether that is as a parent, or away from the home. I know my brain is mush when I don't get enough night sleep..... 09.01.2022 After the birth of my second baby I started to stress a lot about how I was going to cope with my two year old and a newborn. 07.01.2022 Let's talk about music and sleep. Music is a brain engaging sound, which is perfect for when your babies are awake and playing. Music helps your baby's brain to grow and develop. When your baby listens to music your baby's brain is stimulated to grow new synapses, these are linked to language skills.... This all sounds awesome right! But not when it's time to sleep. Feel free to play the music during your pre-sleep wind down, but avoid it during actual sleep time. Instead swap this for white noise, that is a shhhh sound, or a deep rumbly sound which relaxes your baby's brain and encourages deeper better sleep. If you are unsure how loud your white noise machine should be, I like to have my clients white noise as loud as a vacuum cleaner, or as loud as the water running over me in the shower. Do you use white noise? Or music? Or nothing? What works for your baby?

07.01.2022 "Parents often struggle with getting their child to establish a sleep pattern during the day, basically getting to fall asleep at the same times through the day. Helping a child fall asleep quickly and at roughly the same time every day is based on 2 key things. The first is what time a child wakes up. What time a child wakes up will will set his clock for the day. Its a bit like pushing the start button on a timer. When the timer goes off, it will then be time to fall asleep.... Your baby's start button in the morning will not only set nap times, but will set bed time too. 03.01.2022 Dream Feeds I see lots of you telling me you do a dream feed and then baby wakes again at 1-3am. This tells me your dream feed isn't working. Lets look at dream feeds and what they should achieve. What is a dream feed? - A feed done around 10pm when your baby is in a deep sleep, they don't wake during the feed, and you simply feed and pop them back to bed.... Why? For some parents doing a dream feed at this time means babies longest stretch of sleep is then from 10pm to 5/6/7am, and this aligns with their sleep. Hot tip - when it goes wrong, or doesn't suit your baby, you'll see them waking around 1,2,3am for a second feed. While this isn't too bad, if your baby is over 4 months old, my money is on you dropping the dream feed and your baby sleeping all night with one feed. Refusal - some babies refuse the dream feed and you can't force it. These babies will only feed when truly hungry. Get an early night and wait for them to wake hungry. Newborns - I don't recommend dream feeds with newborns, as I feel they feed better fully awake and focused. The small awake time associated with an awake feed for a newborn can help you achieve better sleep after the feed too. Do you dreamfeed? Does it work? Have you tried dropping it to see what happens?
