16.01.2022 This is the story of Baby Steps. With over 25 years' experience caring for expecting mothers and fathers, delivering thousands of babies and providing ongoing care for the growing family, the founding GP Obstetrician of Baby Steps Health Centre, Dr Leon Levitt, has become well aware of the needs of new families. Dr Levitt observed the challenges his patients have had in accessing quality child health care when they needed it, and decided to create a better way. He developed a...n integrated, multidisciplinary private medical centre to assist families in the early stages of parenting. The Baby Steps team have recruited the highest quality allied health providers alongside them and experienced enthusiastic and caring staff. Together all these experts in mother/baby health, have created a whole new approach to family wellness, through the Baby Steps Health Centre.

13.01.2022 Connecting through touch Partner skin to skin time has just as many wonderful benefits for the baby and parent as it does for baby and mother. Research has shown that partners experience a rise in dopamine, and the release of oxytocin when they have skin to skin time with their newborn. For the partner, this creates a positive association with closeness to the baby, and allows the baby to feel safe and secure, and stimulates their brain development. ... After the first day, partners are encouraged to continue skin to skin, because the closer the are, the more the partner can respond the baby’s cues and body language in warm and loving ways. Not only does this reinforce the security the baby feels, but it helps the baby learn about communication, social behaviour and emotions. #newbornlife #perthdads #perthmums

12.01.2022 SIMONE BRAMBILLA / APPLIED MOTION PHYSIOTHERAPY, PODIATRY AND PILATES What is your role at Baby Steps Health Centre? As the Director of AppliedMotion Physiotherapy Podiatry and Pilates I am passionate about working with a team of Paediatric Experts who provide the best evidence-based care to our little clients. My role as a physiotherapist is to ensure that babies and young children with delays or injuries are given the greatest potential to overcome the challenges they may ...face and have a great childhood. What is your favourite part of your job? The hard work we put into our everyday practice, including ongoing professional development and research is extremely rewarding when a child with delayed walking stands up and move the first few steps by themselves. This is the best part of our job. What is one professional skill you are currently working on? A physiotherapists job involves never-ending learning fuelled by research, professional development, and multidisciplinary cooperation. Favourite Quote An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

10.01.2022 Plump, perky and itty bitty breasts come in all shapes and sizes. They come squished, stretched, swollen and saggy, and most women learn to love their uniqueness, because as we were taught in school, you get what you get, and you don’t get upset. What most women want to know, is if their unique shape makes any difference in their ability to breastfeed. We might be aware on the outside that the right breast is often a bit smaller or bigger than the left breast, but what ma...ny don’t know is that each breast also has a different capacity to store milk. This is because women have varying amounts of fatty tissue and milk-secreting glands in each breast. Large breasts don’t necessarily store larger volumes of milk. Your breast storage capacity is determined by how many glands and ducts there are in the breast, and how large those ducts and glands are. Typically, larger breasts contain more fatty tissue rather than glandular tissue. So looks can be deceiving. Breast storage capacity affects how much milk you can have available at one time, it doesn’t affect how much milk you are able to produce. Studies have consistently shown that women with any size of breasts can produce enough milk on a daily basis, as long as the breasts are emptied often enough to stimulate continuing milk production. Because the breast storage capacity influences how much milk is available at one time, it has certain predictable effects on baby’s feeding patterns. How exactly? There’s more to come on baby feeding patterns soon, so keep posted. #lactationconsultants #perthmums #normalizebreastfeeding

07.01.2022 When anything stressful happens with our child, the moment requires us first and foremost to pause and become aware that we are distressed, that we are reaching overwhelm and that we do not want to be there any longer. Then, we need to ask ourselves two essential questions. I teach these to every new parent as the most valuable tool for preventing parental panic: 1. Is the child healthy? 2. Is this behaviour or problem normal for their age and stage of life? #drleon #empoweringparents

06.01.2022 Today we celebrate #WorldKindnessDay ! Kindness connects all humanity. It offers acceptance when we receive it, and uncovers our vulnerability when we give it. It transcends politics, race, religion, gender.. all the barriers to human connectedness. The simplest acts of kindness have immense power, enough to create a ripple effect you can’t begin to imagine.... Don't forget, kindness is not just something we need to do for eachother. Being kind to ourselves is just as important. So is being kind to the world. Lets #makekindnessthenorm X

02.01.2022 New dads can feel just as confused, anxious or lonely as new mums. One of the tricky things about having #depression or anxiety as a new or expecting dad is that the symptoms are often nothing spectacular. It’s common for new dads to feel tired, a bit irritable or emotional, and worry about their baby’s health. None of these feelings make you a bad parent. They’re simply an indicator that you might be experiencing what is a common and treatable illness.... 1 in 10 new dads struggle with postnatal anxiety or depression following the birth of their baby. Dads should look out for any of the following symptoms * Constant tiredness or exhaustion * Ongoing headache * High physical stress levels or muscle tension * Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed * Changes in appetite * Sleep problems (unrelated to baby’s sleep) * Ongoing irritability, anger or moodiness * Emotional withdrawal from your partner, baby, family, friends * Fear of looking after your baby * Not wanting to communicate with your partner, family and friends * Feeling isolated * Using alcohol or drugs to ‘escape’ or cope * Suicidal thoughts You can’t support your family if you can’t support yourself. Trust your gut. It might be time to check in on your #mentalhealth. If you are looking for support from our #BabyStepsteam, reach out to any of our experienced GPs. Dr Leon Levitt and Dr Lindy Savage and committed to supporting healthy families and encourage you to #TellSomeoneWhoCares !
