24.01.2022 Lit Bits @ CBPS: Spine Character Description This 'Talk for Writing' strategy is an effective way for students to develop character descriptions. 1. Take an image and discuss the type of character we want to portray (evil, friendly, kind etc.), this will impact the type of vocabulary selected. 2. Then slow the description down by deciding what elements of the character to describe, for example, eyes, jaw, brows, mouth and so on. 3. Work together to brainstorm a collection... of vocabulary that could be used to describe the features. 4. Finally use the vocabulary to write a character description. https://vimeo.com/336708229 Password: Litbits See more

23.01.2022 Systematic Phonics and Decodable Reading ‘101’ (online) Learning to read words does not typically come naturally to children, they need to be explicitly taught the relationship between letters (graphemes) and the corresponding sounds (phonemes). This professional learning session will provide you with knowledge of the relationship between the learning of phonics and reading. We will examine and unpack the elements of a typical decodable reading session. This Webex session i...s perfect for the teacher who is beginning their journey into the ‘simple view’ of reading in the classroom. 23.01.2022 I would like to share a short vignette of our pre-primary class. "USING MANIPULATIVES TO CREATE A FIVE SENTENCE STORY"! This short vignette demonstrates how five sentence oral narratives can be created using manipulatives. Students use five taught connectives to shape the base of their story. 22.01.2022 The Magic of Observational and Playful Writing (online) Students’ descriptive writing will never truly sparkle, unless they are taught to observe the world closely, carefully and constantly. The best descriptive writers are the best observersof sight and sound, smell and taste, of texture. The art of writing is, in part, the art of finding the words to describe the physical world in a way that gives life and depth to the imaginary world of the story. This professional learni...ng will provide teachers with practical strategies to challenge students to play with language in order to enhance their narrative writing skills. 22.01.2022 This short vignette demonstrates a typical reading session using decodable readers. LINK: https://vimeo.com/419759097 Password: Litbits@CBPS Before Reading: When we are using decodable texts in the classroom we need to include some key elements into our teaching BEFORE we give the students a book to read. We want them to succeed in reading and develop a level of automaticity. 1. Choosing the correct decodable book: The decodable books we choose for students need to contai...n specific letter-sound knowledge that the children are learning at that moment. Most decodable books will have this information on the front cover or the inside cover. 2. Preparing for reading: Begin reading sessions with phonological awareness warmups. Make sure that the children have opportunities to review the graphemes before they start reading. Get them to word-build, blend, segment and practice reading through a variety of word reading and spelling activities and games. Reading a decodable book requires enough preparation so that it is a successful experience for the beginner/ struggling reader. During Reading: Know the text before students read it. By reading the text before the students read it, it allows you to interact with the story as they read. 1. Encourage the emergent readers to point to each word. This allows them to keep on track with the blending of the letter sounds. Once they develop confidence with reading, encourage them to keep track with their eyes only. Finger-pointing is really for the emergent reader. 2. Assist the students when an error has been made. Allow them to blend the sounds again to read the words correctly. Encourage and model blending at all times. Ask the child to sound out the word and blend the sounds together into words. If this occurs, make sure the students re-read the sentence again to ensure the meaning of the sentence is grasped. 3. Re-read some sentences to your students to highlight fluency and expression from you as an experienced reader. After Reading: 1. Reading is for meaning: Always check the reader understands the words in the text. This is a great opportunity to develop vocabulary within context of a story. Reading is a combination of decoding and comprehension. Children need vocabulary in order to comprehend. The teacher can develop comprehension at different levels: factual, inferential etc. 2. Follow up word work, dictation or phonics activities to support reading, can be included in your rotation. Practice and more practice Reading a number of decodable texts with the same spellings will help children remember and commit new words to long-term memory. You can also ask children to re-read texts with expression or in pairs. This will develop reading fluency.

19.01.2022 Lit Bits @ Cable Beach Unicorn Expert: Hook for Information Reports We organised an incursion with a Unicorn Expert to hook students into our new topic of information reports. Our expert showed a unicorn PowerPoint and used unicorn artifacts including gold horseshoe,a whales tooth which we claimed to be a baby unicorn horn, bottled poo and a sensor camera. We ensured that the PowerPoint debugged any tricky vocabulary that was in the new text they were focusing on. A hook into... new topics can be an experience, like nothing they have ever witnessed before or an object that fires up curiosity. A cleverly manufactured hook will not only capture their imagination, but provide students with some background knowledge about the new writing topic. https://vimeo.com/345599464 Password: Litbits
19.01.2022 Lit Bits @ CBPS: Five Sentence Stories This vignette shows students learning how to compose five sentence stories. Five sentence stories provide students with the basic framework for creating narratives. They teach the students the basic elements of setting, character, complication and resolution. They also provide students with a bank of key connectives they can utilise in their writing other than 'then'. Five sentence stories can later be expanded to create full-fledged narratives. 14.01.2022 Hot Seating: Reading Comprehension Strategy This short vignette shows the technique of ‘hot seating’ in an upper and then lower primary classroom. Hot seating is when an adult or child adopts a character’s persona and answers questions in role. It’s a very effective way to help children gain a deeper understanding of characters from both fiction and non-fiction. It can also be a lot of fun. 09.01.2022 Litbits@CBPS I thought I would share a short vignette I made that shows how I create a toolkit and then use that toolkit to lead into shared short burst writing with students. Every time we expect kids to write we should be writing with them first. It’s what you do as the teacher that makes all the difference to students understanding of the writing process. Some tips when shared writing with students include: - Use two colour of pens (red to be used to focus on punctuation a...nd vocab) - Use the margin when shared writing to readdress toolkit - Use red to change words , swap vocabulary - Use a line where you want students to fill in the blanks - Never take first option children provide you with as this is an opportunity to generate words and ideas - Re-read, check and edit - Students can use mini whiteboards to write down any ideas that they have in session - Use EA or AIEO if in room to note down students ideas, which can then later be used for students to generate ideas for their own writing. https://vimeo.com/357465075 Password: Litbits
09.01.2022 This year Cable Beach celebrated book week early. I thought we would share some of our activities for inspiration for your book week this year: 1. THE AMAZING ‘READING IS MY SECRET POWER’ RACE Classes used their special powers to solve problems and be the first class to complete the circuit. Problems required classes to draw upon their powers of speed, telepathy, invisibility, endurance and strength. Classes needed to work as a team using everyone’s secret powers to complet...e these challenges. The winning classroom won themselves a pizza lunch from Dominoes. 2. GUESS TEACHER’S SECRET POWERS Throughout Book Week during library sessions students got the opportunity to match teachers to their secret powers. Clues were given by teachers throughout the week (teachers selected need to be DOTT relief teachers who saw lots of students throughout the week). Students had to use their secret powers to find the clues. Teacher 1: power of invisibility (showed students photo of family with them missing BUT told a big story about them being in the picture / also wore cloak of invisibility) Teacher 2: power of strength (teacher carried around a pretend weight for the week and continually offered to lift heavy objects) Teacher 3: power of telepathy (teacher said to class I think Miss K needs a green texta. Five minutes later Miss K walks into class and asks for green texta.. lots of examples like this throughout the week) Teacher 4: power of super sight (teacher wore googly eyes and kept referring to things she could see in distance) Teacher 5: power of hearing (teacher kept hearing things students could not hear throughout the day) 3. STORY SWAP: Classes created a story that had hidden clues woven throughout it hinting at which class has written the story. Stories were then swapped with other classes who then need to read the stories and use their secret powers of reading to work out which class wrote the story. Classes were encouraged to be inventive, to use picture clues, invisible ink, problems to solve etc. Once classes had worked out who their partner class was they joined together. Older students shared a pre-determined story together. Middle and junior primary shared their class’ favourite picture book. 4. LUNCH TIME BOOK WHIZ QUIZ Open to Year 4/5/6 students: Are you Cable Beach’s next Book Whiz Kidz? Students nominated their own teams of four. Then they Invented own team name, identified their team’s super power and got ready to challenge other teams. 5. Book Parade: Just because you cannot have book week without a parade 6. Family Campfire Night Four campfires were set up on the oval. Each campfire had a different story teller. Each storyteller used their secret powers of storytelling to entertain the community. One campfire had singing with guitar, another spooky stories, another poetry and the final fire dreamtime stories. See more

02.01.2022 Litbits: One Story, Two Ways This short vignette shows how to explicitly teach dialectal differences using bi dialectal storytelling. Beyond the animated storytellers and the engaged students you can see some explicit targeted teaching happening. During this read we are teaching the children the differences between Aboriginal English and Standard Australian English third person pronouns. Through this explicit teaching we are facilitating our Aboriginal English speaking students' acquisition of Standard Australian English. This is a vignette or early language acquisition specialists from Waardi who work with our students and coach our teachers weekly. Password: Litbits https://vimeo.com/357474442
