22.01.2022 This time next week, the Bach Society will be taking to the stage to present Brisbane's only performance of Handel's Messiah in 2020! Join us next Saturday for this festive favourite, celebrating not only the Christmas season, but a slow return to normality.

18.01.2022 2/4 - The bass is the second soloist to be heard in Handel's Messiah, and gets some of the most dramatic moments in the oratorio, from echoing the words of the prophets about the coming of light to the darkness, to the vocal fireworks of "Why do the nations rage", to the triumph of "The trumpet shall sound". Samuel Piper last appeared with the Bach Society for our April 2019 Mozart concert, but sang for our Messiah in 2015. Sam has worked with Opera Queensland, the Queensland... Symphony Orchestra, Expressions Dance Company, and numerous festivals and groups around the state. Prior to the emergence of COVID-19, he was undertaking a period of study in Treviso, Italy, as the recipient of funding from Arts Queensland and the Brisbane City Council. 16.01.2022 3/4 - The alto soloist in Messiah has had various roles over the years. In Handel's own time, the alto wasn't originally prominent until 1750, when Handel re-wrote several arias to showcase the italian castrato he was working with in his opera season. Thanks to that Gaetano Guadagni, the alto now enjoys the extremes of light and shade, from the joyful "O thou that tellest" to the dramatic "But who may abide" and "Thou art gone up on high". This year, Anne Fulton returns to th...e Bach Society to take up this mantle. An Honours Graduate from the Queensland Conservatorium, Anne has been a soloist with Opera Queensland, the QSO, the Queensland Ballet, and many renowned choral groups in Australia and abroad. She has had roles with Opera Queensland in various productions, including Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto, The Merry Widow and La Fanciulla del West. 15.01.2022 Over the next few days, we thought we'd introduce this Saturday's soloists, in order of appearance. For many, the Christmas season doesn't start until a tenor, accompanied by calm strings, sings "Comfort ye, my people." Bernard Wheaton has thus begun Christmas for Bach Society audiences for a number of years now, and we're thrilled to have him with us once again. He is well-known to Brisbane audiences as a regular performer with Opera Queensland (both as a principal and in the chorus) as well as many other groups around town.
