08.01.2022 The issues of broken sleep Most people wake up two or three times during the night. By the age of 50 many women will wake three to four times a night. This can also be the problem with hormonal imbalances that need to be resolved. The time that you wake up, will be an indicator of where the issue originates. If you find you’re waking between midnight and 2am, in Ayurveda this is seen as a pitta (fire or heat) issue and relates to built-up pressure and stress. Waking early ...in the morning, say between 3am and 5am, is more related to vata (air) which is centred around worry and anxiety. How to fix sleep issues I spoke on ABC radio with a sleep specialist from Wesley Hospital, he said sleep problems are dramatically increasing because so many people are staring into their screens late at night and then expecting to easily drift off to sleep. He suggested setting a sleep ritual that includes no electronics one hour before bed so your body can calm down. I also tell my clients that they should go to sleep at the same time each night as that sets your body in a natural rhythm. Once you’re in a good rhythm you can also get rid of the alarm clock it’s better to naturally come out of a deep sleep on your own accord. You can always use the alarm as a back-up. I wake up at 4.45am every morning it doesn’t matter if I’m in a dark hotel room or in my own bed. I never dream either as I’m not getting woken out of sleep cycles. Meditation works really well as a way of stopping your racing mind. The Art of Living, a humanitarian and educational NGO, says that just 20 minutes of meditation can give you as much deep rest as eight hours’ sleep. It can be tricky in the corporate world, where business execs often work under intense pressure, irregular routines and different time-zones. The alternative, having an unrealistic belief that you’re bulletproof and not allowing your body enough time to rejuvenate in slumber will eventually wear you down though. My executive clients who follow the simple steps to improve their sleep enjoy overall better health, have a stronger drive and faster recovery than the ones that think they can function on thin air. Excess cortisol, or the fight or flight hormone, causes weight gain around the abdomen, can lead to adrenal fatigue and an even bigger crash, so it’s really important to start taking heed of this advice, like many switched on top tier business execs are starting to realise. The ones who take care of their greatest asset, which is their health, are the ones who stay on top of their game.

They probably sent you off for a scan or a blood test, but nothing is showing up and no one can quite put their finger on what the problem is, so they say there isn’t a problem. ... You might not be convinced. If this sounds like you, read on because I’m going to give you some valuable information about how to help prevent disease from manifesting in your body. By the time you have a disease which has been given a name and label in Western medicine, you have most likely missed out on years, even decades, where you could have been treating it, reducing its impact or even possibly preventing it altogether. Disease doesn’t just manifest in the body you don’t wake up one day with cancer, heart issues or osteoporosis. Rather, it’s caused by a combination of factors including genetic predisposition and also lifestyle factors, which can be modified if you listen to your body’s warning signs, before it turns into full blown disease. In Ayurveda, we call the development of a disease, the Six Stages of Disease this covers the beginning niggling little issues (maybe you’re not sleeping well, suffering reflux or heartburn) through to the imbalance spreading to other parts of the body, and then the last level, called Infrared, where your natural healing system isn’t able to fight off the illness. Together with a team of experts, and the knowledge incorporated from 5000 years of Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, meditation and yoga, we created the Health Spectrum. This takes the traditional Six Stages of Disease to another level. This Spectrum clearly sets out nine levels of health from optimal health down to chronic disease. 02.01.2022 Zucchini, Millet and Mint Salad Serves 4 Ingredients:... 3 cups cooked millet, cooled 6-7 small zucchini, sliced into thin coins Handful mint leaves Handful lightly toasted pumpkin seeds Coriander (cilantro) dressing: 1 large bunch coriander, stems, roots, all roughly chopped Juice of 1 medium lemon 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder Salt to taste Method: 1. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat, add a splash of olive oil and cook the zucchini for 4-5 minutes, stirring often, until they are golden and tender. Remove from the heat and set aside while you make the dressing. 2. To make the dressing place all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth. You can add 1-2 tablespoons cold filtered water if you need to, to help things along. Taste and adjust seasoning. 3. Combine cooled millet, cooked zucchini, mint, pumpkin (pepita) seeds and as much dressing as you like. You may have leftover dressing, which will happily keep in a jar in the fridge for 3-4 days. 4. 01.01.2022 Spinach & moong bean soup Serves 1-2 Ingredients:... 1/3 cup moong beans, washed, soaked and boiled until tender, then drained 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped 2 tbsp ghee 1 tsp cumin seeds tsp asafoetida (optional) 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp fennel seed powder tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp coriander seed powder 2 cups water cup chopped fresh coriander Salt to taste Juice of a large lemon (around 4 tbsp) Method: 1. Wash soak and cook the moong beans in a pot until tender. (See Moong Bean Soup steps 1-3 on exact cooking process). 2. Heat the ghee in a large pan and add the cumin seeds and asafoetida. 3. Add the garlic and fry until aromatic. Add the turmeric, coriander seed and fennel seed powder and water. Bring to the boil. 4. Add the moong beans, spinach, salt and lemon juice and allow to boil for three to four minutes. Add the chopped coriander. 5. Blend until roughly pureed. 6. Return to the pan and bring to a low simmer. Remove from the heat and check the seasoning. Garnish with more chopped coriander if you like.
